Sisi Nene

How do you tell the story of someone who helped write the stories of so many others?

We could focus on her achievements: her law degree from the University of Calabar, her call to the Nigerian Bar, and a career that spanned law, human resources, business management and entrepreneurship. These were all proud milestones on her journey, but they were never the truest measure of her life. What defined Nene was not what she accomplished, but how fully she lived: with faith, resilience, generosity, joy, and a light that made countless lives brighter.

SisiNene, as she was fondly called, was a mother to many. Her heart and her home were always open, and it did not matter who you were or where you came from. People found comfort, laughter, advice and belonging with her. She gave generously of her time, her energy, her resources and herself, carrying the burdens of others as though they were her own and doing whatever she could to make life a little easier for anyone who needed her. She showed up for people wholeheartedly. A friend’s wedding, a family celebration or an important moment in someone else’s life could easily become hers too, and she would be there with the same enthusiasm and care as though she were celebrating one of her own.

She was remarkably resourceful. If something needed to be done, all you had to do was tell Nene. Somehow, she would find a way. She approached life with determination, resilience and an unwavering belief that there was always a way forward. Life presented her with many challenges, but she met them with the strength of a lioness, rising again and again with hope, courage and dignity.

She also had a remarkable capacity to forgive. Her kindness was sometimes taken for granted, and there were people who hurt her, yet she continued to extend grace. She felt things deeply and loved wholeheartedly. Even when loving others came at a cost to her, she rarely stopped giving.

And Nene knew how to celebrate life.

There was always a reason to gather at SisiNene’s house. Her birthdays were never ordinary occasions. There would be praise and worship, prayer, instrumentalists or a band, plenty of food and a house full of people. Of course, there would also be a birthday photoshoot and several new outfits made for the occasion. She treated each birthday as the milestone it was and approached celebration with the same fullness with which she approached so much of life.

Christmas held an especially joyful place in her heart. It was her favourite time of the year, and she embraced it completely, decorating her home, helping to decorate the church and finding every opportunity to make the season feel special. She carried an almost childlike excitement for the things she loved, whether it was Christmas, a new outfit, a celebration or simply something small that brought her joy. Life never seemed to make her too grown-up to be delighted by it.

That love of beauty and celebration showed up in her sense of style too. Nene loved clothes, loved looking good and knew how to make an entrance. Sundays could feel like a runway, and special occasions were rarely complete without something new to wear. She had an eye for fashion and took genuine pleasure in dressing beautifully, whether for church, Thanksgiving, a birthday or someone else’s celebration. Style was simply another expression of the joy and vibrancy with which she lived.

She was also incredibly funny. Her sense of humour was unmatched, and she had an unrivalled collection of memes and WhatsApp stickers that could make even the simplest conversation more hilarious. Her WhatsApp stories were often their own source of entertainment, filled with the kind of things that would make you stop, laugh and wonder where she had even found them. She could lighten a difficult moment, fill a room with laughter and bring an infectious playfulness into everyday life.

To know Nene was to know generosity, resilience, laughter, forgiveness, celebration, style, faith and love. She was a loving mother, daughter, sister, aunty, partner and friend; a trusted neighbour and mentor; and a mother to many. Her faith was central to her life, and she was a devout member of RCCG New Life Parish, where she served faithfully and was deeply involved in the life of the church and its community. She did not simply pass through the lives of others; she became part of their stories.

This is where the chapter we shared with her ends, far earlier than we could ever have imagined. But God is the author and finisher of her story. Only He knows why this chapter ended when it did, and only He knows the beautiful parts of her story that continue beyond what we can see.

We will remember her in the lives she nurtured, the burdens she carried, the laughter she gave us, the celebrations she created, the beauty and joy she brought into ordinary moments, and the love she poured out so freely. Her story lives on in all of us who were blessed to be part of it.

In loving memory of our beloved Mary Nene Okon
Nene lived with an open heart and a deep faith in God. She was gracious, generous, and resilient, and always ready to show up for the people she loved. Her generosity, warmth, laughter and love touched countless lives, and her absence is deeply felt by all who knew and loved her.

This space was created to celebrate her life, preserve the memories she leaves with us, and give friends and family a place to share their own memories, tributes and photos.
