I met Madeline at work in 2007 and we have instantly connected although my English at that time was quite limited. Madeline was so patient with me while trying to communicate. She taught me so many English expressions like “times flies”. I always think of her when I say this word. She also introduced me to the best cocktails in town (vodka martini - who knew you could mix those 2 alcohols!!!). I have so many memories and also so many more recently since we moved to Clapham.
Madeline, you were my “rayon de soleil” each time we met and laugh. I miss you dearly. Love.

So many memories of my lovely friend, Madeline. We met in the queue to register at Durham Uni in September 2002 - I followed her in as she had a really confident walk and looked like she knew where to go! We went to the pub straight afterwards and a firm friendship was born. A few photos from various times over the years - a holiday to Thassos in 2003, KPGM ball in Leeds (glam photo with Ben), lots of parties / nights out / celebrations from the noughties and our wedding in 2011. Some of my best early London memories are of nights out with Madeline. You will be so missed my darling friend and forever in my heart. C x

Dearest Madeline
In honor of you. Some treasured precious memories.

When you were born I was 7 years old, so excited you had arrived: a keen mummy’s help I got involved early in looking after you and we developed a little bond. You loved, at bedtime, having someone lie with you singing golden slumbers (often me or Bonnie when mum was so busy), until you fell asleep, one of your hands clutching your milk bottle and the other twirling my hair often into huge knots! At 2 years of age, you were regularly sleeping in my room and we continued to share a bedroom for many years. I remember you belly laughed from such a young age, with tummy tickles and echoing ‘Aaaxxx-minster’ with delightful laughter when we asked where you lived….. somehow you skillfully managed to laugh whilst simultaneously keeping your bottle in your mouth. Sometimes you would get easily frightened, you would run and fling yourself into me, if no mummy around, especially if we were in the garden and there was a noisy airplane in the sky. We went swimming on Sundays for a time, I remember you going from holding my outstretched hands to bravely letting go, taking your first little independent swim in 1984 (courtesy of my diaries). You did not always want to get out of the pool (being such a water babe) so mum had a comforting warm bottle of milk ready. You and I went swimming together just last summer and your grace, style and strength in the water was remarkable (cont).

Dearest Madeline,
Some more treasured precious memories.

We sisters loved dancing to mum and dad’s records. I have a fond memory of you spinning round in circles singing along with ‘don’t you want me baby’ by the human league when it was on Top of the Pops! I remember reading Adrian Mole to you, it made us both laugh so much and then later in life I read it again to you when you were in hospital before you had children.

I remember you sharing my bed again when you came to my graduation in my student house and I felt so proud to be your big sister. I remember picking you up and a few long drives home in my car from Leeds where you were at university, you were a reassuring travel companion to a nervous novice motorway driver and even if you did under estimate the amount of things you were bringing back home we somehow managed to cram it in the car. I remember you visiting me in Manchester, when Colin and I got our own first house, and cooking you dinner and pudding, I still have the sweet thank you notes you sent me. I remember visiting you in Leeds, waving goodbye emotionally to turn round and find you had already gone in and shut the door! I remember you coming over to my house for the day when we lived in London, when I was at home with a little Jimi (my son and your nephew), and you casually opening my fridge having a good search for a bite to eat as if we were back living together at home again! Dearest Maddie,
Some more treasured precious memories.

Manchester 2004, my hen do, you helped with the hairdressing including straightening my friend’s hair. I remember your beauty on your wedding day and us preparing Esme, my daughter and your niece, in her role as flower girl just before you walked up ‘the aisle’. I remember looking after Skippy, your dog, when you went away, he was a handful to say the least! He ate his bed, barked at everyone walking past the window (we lived on a busy road) and ‘befriended’ the children’s cuddly toys (cont.).

Madeline as a new and loving mum to George and well-established Auntie overseeing a very young Jimi cuddle his new cousin! Madeline, mum and a wriggling Esme in 2003.
Dearest Maddie,
Some more treasured precious memories.
I remember your kindness and compassion when Jimi was back and forth in hospital. The way you sweetly offered Esme some of your clothes for her to wear at dad’s funeral when she rushed back from traveling. Your wise advice to Jimi as he contemplated his further education. Your support when Dad died, your depth of understanding, your intelligence, fragility, boldness, great sense of humor and your many talents including as a wonderful artist. I loved talking with you about our shared love of literature and discovering the books we both loved. Your openness and courage. Your love, personality and humor stronger and shining through even more so as you became so poorly. I think of you everyday, forever in my heart and soul, treasured precious memories xxxx
