Your legacy of kindness will forever resonate.

Obituary

With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Hiruy, who was born on September 3rd, 1976 and passed away on July 8th, 2026 in London.

Hiruy was cherished by family, friends, and the wider Habesha and FNAN communities for his deep kindness, quiet strength, and unwavering generosity.

Hiruy was known for his ready smile and steady, positive outlook. He believed in the dignity of every person and gave his time freely to listen, encourage, and guide. Faith, heritage, and family were at the heart of who he was; they shaped his decisions and the calm, principled way he moved through life.

Service to others was Hiruy’s hallmark. Through FNAN Eritrean Youth & Family Outreach, he mentored young people and adults alike—offering thoughtful counsel, practical help, and hope. He was a trusted presence: humble in manner, wise in judgment, and consistent in his care. In community gatherings and everyday conversations, he brought people together with patience and grace.

Those who knew Hiruy will remember his steadfast support, his careful words, and the way he made time for anyone who needed it. He had a gift for seeing potential in others and a quiet way of lifting burdens. His legacy is written in the confidence he nurtured, the friendships he strengthened, and the families he stood beside.

Hiruy is survived by his family, who will miss him beyond measure. He is also mourned by countless friends and the many people he mentored and encouraged over the years.

A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, July 27, 2026, from 10:00–11:00 am at Islington & St Pancras Crematorium Chapel, 278 High Road, London N2 9AG. The burial will follow at 12:30 pm at Islington Cemetery. A reception will take place from 1:00 pm onwards at St Mary Catholic Church, 279 High Road, London N2 8HG. All who knew Hiruy are warmly invited to attend.

To honour his memory, friends and family are invited to share tributes and cherished photographs on the memorial page. Hiruy’s life will continue to inspire through the love he gave and the many lives he quietly enriched. May his soul rest in peace and may God comfort all who mourn him.

I first met Hiruy in Nov 2019, when FNAN was just an idea taking shape. He, Mesfin, Mussie and Yohannes were already out in the community, gently but determinedly canvassing how we could open pathways into construction skills so recently arrived Eritrean compatriots could find their feet in the UK. That was Hiruy’s and his Friend's way (loving called by us as the construction-gang): start where people are, then quietly build something practical and dignified with them.

Personally over the years we shared many long phone calls—wandering from philosophy to social innovation to the smallest details that help a family feel at home. I was always struck by his creativity: he didn’t just have suggestions, he had humane, workable designs for change. He asked generous questions, listened with care, and then offered ideas that made everything simpler and kinder.

Dr Fitsum (FNAN Trustee) said it best: “Hiruy never hesitated to show up—whatever the inconvenience.” I saw that again and again. He appeared when a meeting needed grounding, always showing and demonstrating of making things simple, to a struggling newcomer needing encouragement, when a task needed finishing. He brought steadiness, wisdom and a smile that carried more hope than any speech could.

Thank you, brother, for the example you set and the doors you opened. Your quiet courage and patient imagination live on in the people you lifted and the paths you helped to build. May your memory be a blessing, and may we honour it by continuing the work you loved.
