Bruno’s Story

Bruno was the eldest child of Martha and Hermann Schoepfer-Felder. His childhood home, Fure, was a traditional farmhouse in the rural village of Schüpfheim, Switzerland. Bruno was born in the summer of 1955 and his birth was quickly followed by the birth of his three brothers, Urs, Willi and Mani, who provided Bruno with a willing army of childhood collaborators and friends to play, build and explore with. The siblings were joined by their loving sister, Claudia, a few years later.
Bruno was not particularly fond of school, saying that the teaching and curriculum lacked creativity and passion. He couldn’t wait to get home to the farm, where life was full of real-life learning opportunities: helping with the delivery of calves and piglets, making fertilizer bombs for his home-made cannon, building tree houses with his friends, spear fishing in the Emme river with his brothers, riding tractors and helping in the family schnapps distillery. It was through the schnapps business that Bruno got his first insight into hospitality as he often accompanied his father visiting restaurants and ski huts across central Switzerland to sell their schnapps.
After completing his mandatory education, Bruno spent a year in Estavayer-le-Lac learning French and English. It was a chance that Bruno’s father gave to him, in the belief that learning languages opened the mind and provided international opportunities.
Bruno then returned to Luzern to complete a business degree, and during that time he had the opportunity to work in the legendary Hotel Bernerhof under the mentorship of Fugi Fuchs. It was because of this experience that Bruno decided to enroll in the Hotel School Luzern to complete his education.
A few weeks before the end of his hotel management degree, at the age of 22, Bruno spotted an advert in the Swiss Hotel Revue for a Restaurant Manager at the Mandarin Hotel in Manilla – he had to check a map to find out where that was – and he applied. A fortnight later in a Moevenpick restaurant in Zurich, he was interviewed for the job and, to his complete disbelief, was offered the position. The subsequent journey to Manilla (via Athens, Bangkok, and Hong Kong) was his first experience on a plane. He was unaware that there would be a layover in Hong Kong. Had he not met on the same flight, per accident, the hotel’s head chef who offered him a bed at the Excelsior Hotel in Causeway Bay, Bruno is convinced that he may never have made it to Manilla.
The first three months in Manilla were tough. Bruno managed a staff of 60 and spoke only broken English, but somehow he made it work. His international career had truly begun. In later years, his then General Manager told him that in those first few weeks they were very close to putting him back on a plane to Switzerland but luckily Bruno’s work ethic and passion pulled him through.
After two years in Manilla, Bruno moved to Bangkok to take over as Food and Beverage Manager of the Oriental Hotel. At the time, it was regularly voted the best hotel in the world. He went from managing one restaurant to managing 13 food and beverage outlets – and he loved it! His years in Bangkok were hugely successful, happy years. Perhaps most importantly, it was at the Oriental Bangkok that he worked for the legendary hotelier Kurt Wachveitl, who became Bruno’s most treasured hospitality industry mentor. After half a decade in Thailand, Bruno returned to Europe and was hired by the Grosvenor House Hotel as Deputy General Manager. Although he only stayed in London for 18 months, it was long enough to meet his future wife, Laura.
From London he returned East and joined the opening team of the Shangri-La Hotel in Kuala Lumpur as Resident Manager. It was the first new hotel to open in KL in 20 years and they had to provide police to control the crowds on opening day. Bruno and Laura enjoyed all that Malaysia had to offer – in particular, the food, the culture and the beaches.
After an offer for his first General Manager role at the SAS Palais Hotel in Vienna, Bruno and Laura got married and relocated to Austria. They set up a home for the first time in a small but lovely apartment in the middle of the city, overlooking the park. It was while working for SAS that he met his next life mentor, Kurt Ritter, one of Switzerland’s truly iconic hospitality leaders. It was also in Vienna that Laura and Bruno started their own family with the birth of two of their three children, Isabella and Nicholas. Much to Laura’s annoyance, Bruno did not see much wonder in the birthing process, his explanation being that he had delivered so many cows and pigs in his time and that the process wasn’t much different!
After five very happy and successful years in Vienna, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group came knocking again and offered Bruno the role of a lifetime, Global Chief Operating Officer. Bruno, Laura, Isabella and Nicholas relocated to Hong Kong where they all thrived. Bruno excelled in his new role and, during that time, oversaw the creation and renovation of over 70 food and beverage outlets worldwide. He also led a company-wide Quality Training Standard/Management by Objectives programme, which won the prestigious Hong Kong Business Award – the first and only time a hotel company had won the award. During their time in Asia, Laura and Bruno added a third child, Sophia, to their growing family.
After six of the happiest years of their lives, Bruno and Laura wanted to return to Europe to be closer to their families. This was facilitated by Bruno receiving an offer to become the Managing Director and CEO of the Movenpick Group. They relocated from Hong Kong to Unteraegeri, which was quite a change! Bruno enjoyed his five years with Moevenpick. It gave him the opportunity to grow professionally and take on a much larger challenge – leading a publicly listed company. At the end of his contract, Bruno moved over to a new role as Chairman of the Board for Moevenpick Hotels and Resorts.
With less pressure and more time on his hands, Bruno decided to start his own property development company building developments in both Graubunden and Zurich. He was in his element – he loved to build! The developments were hugely successful and provided his family with a mountain retreat, which has become their second home and the location of many loud New Year’s parties and fun-filled skiing and hiking holidays.
But hospitality was calling his name again when a very interesting offer came his way, to redevelop and conceptualise the Buergenstock resort in Luzern. This endeavour took 10 years and, during that time, with the help of an amazing team, he transformed the partly derelict space into Switzerland’s leading mountain resort and one of the world’s most iconic hotels. What he achieved had never been achieved in Switzerland before – a 1 billion CHF project. The project opened in 2017, on time and on budget. Bruno was never a man who craved personal recognition or put himself in the media for self-promotion. He did what he did out of passion and love for the industry that had given him so much.
But Bruno still had one last project, very close to his heart – to build his own hotel. And so it was that Acasa Suites in Oerlikon, Zurich opened its doors in 2017. A 140-room, independent boutique hotel, which has grown into an incredibly successful business. Had Bruno not become ill, he had plans to open a second or a third hotel – perhaps something his family will do in the future.
Bruno truly lived a life. He left nothing on the table. He regretted nothing. His positivity and generosity gave those around him so much joy. He loved his family, he loved his siblings and he loved his friends. Wherever his spirit has gone, we hope that they are ready for him!

Bruno was a larger than life character. He was a wonderfully welcoming host and an endless source of positivity and enthusiasm for life. He inspired me to be passionate about my work and his journey is a masterclass to all in how following your passion will lead to a full and successful life.
Bruno loved his family dearly and would move heaven and earth for them. I know they love him dearly, and he was deeply proud of them. He would want nothing more than for Laura and the children to remember him by living with his same passion for life.
I smile to think that, wherever we go after this life, Bruno will be there to welcome us with a good bottle of wine and a cigar.

It is with much sadness and sorrow to learn that Bruno left us. We send you our sincerest and deepest condolences. May Bruno`s soul Rest in Peace forever.
I knew Bruno since 1980 as we were both hoteliers in Asia. In 1994 Bruno hired me to run the Mandarin Oriental in Singapore, then thanks to him i could join MOHG corporate office in Hong Kong and in 2001 he hired me again to join him and Jean-Gabriel Peres at Moevenpick. I very much enjoyed working with Bruno during this time.
Bruno was an inspirational leader always supporting me and our team in our endeavors. We built a high level of trust which was instrumental in our personal and professional relationships. Bruno was a fantastic visionary and a passionate hotelier and entrepreneur. Thanks to his guidance and innovative ideas we were able to grow our company and initiate cutting edge programs and initiatives. Bruno was simply amazing which resulted in his many excellent professional achievements in his life. He was highly respected by key people in the international hotel industry due to his high level of professionalism, integrity and his genuin care for people around him, with a big heart.
Bruno, we shall miss you! I shall always treasure the good moments we were able to share together and with our friends. Bruno will stay in my memory and in my heart forever.

We first met Bruno in Flims many years ago, completely by chance. We were browsing an estate agent's window during a ski holiday—with a baby in tow and no real intention of buying—when we came across a model of a new apartment complex. The agent kindly took us to view one of the apartments, but it was already under offer. He called Bruno, the developer, who interrupted his ski day to meet us that same afternoon.
Bruno confirmed the apartment was taken, but told us about the one next door, which he had been using himself during the build. It wasn’t yet on the market—he had held it back simply because he needed it a little longer. He knew, with its spectacular view of the Flimserstein, it would be an easy one to sell when the time came. What happened next was pure Bruno: generous, spontaneous, and full of trust—he offered us the chance to stay for a weekend to “try before we buy.”
That gesture changed everything. We fell in love with the apartment, and it has since become a place where our family has built countless joyful memories. Without Bruno’s warmth, vision, and quick thinking, we would never have found this home.
Bruno was, as his family so beautifully said, a true tour de force—creative, generous, and full of life. We are grateful for the lasting role he played in our story. His legacy lives on in the joy our family continues to experience in the very place he created.

A fond memory was when he came to our aid when our cheese fondues had either separated, or formed a lump of cheese. Bruno took charge and sorted them out in a flash.

Aus der Bekanntschaft durch unsere Kinder ist eine wunderbare Freundschaft entstanden. Diese Freundschaft mit Dir während diesen vielen, vielen Jahren, ist ein Teil unseres Lebens. Sie ist ein Geschenk, sie hat uns bereichert und dieses gute Gefühl gegeben, zusammen ein ausgefülltes und schönes Leben zu haben.
Jedes Wiedersehen war, als hätten wir uns gestern getroffen. Deine Herzlichkeit verstärkten das Gefühl von Zusammengehörigkeit. Dein Lächeln, deine Offenheit vermittelten Interesse und Wertschätzung. Die Freude am Geniessen von all den köstlichen Dingen, die Begeisterung an vielseitigen Gesprächen und der Austausch von Erfahrungen machten alle Begegnungen unvergessen und oft lange ausgedehnt.
Wir sind einfach nur sehr, sehr dankbar, dass wir diese wunderschönen Momente erleben durften mit dir und Laura, ihr beide so liebenswert, grosszügig und zum richtig Gernhaben.

I was deeply moved by your heartfelt message about Bruno. It is clear that to all who had the pleasure to know him that he was an extraordinary individual whose impact on those around him was profound.
As you know I had the privilege of working with Bruno during his time with Mövenpick and I can truly say that he was an inspiring leader. His vision and passion for the hospitality industry were unmatched, and his warmth and generosity left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered.
Reflecting later on of some fond memories of Bruno it was during conferences we attended together. His enthusiasm and energy were contagious and unmatched. He always knew how to bring a smile to everyone's face. Bruno's ability to connect with people on every level and make them feel valued was one of his many extraordinary qualities.
Bruno's legacy will continue to inspire all of us who had the honour of knowing him. I will truly miss being able to call him asking for advice which I still did often.
I will fondly remember the last BBQ we had with Bruno and have attached a photo of that wonderful day. It is exactly how I will remember him, his love of life and his contagious smile.

We only met the two of you a few times in Flims and Zug, but they were happy times and Bruno was to us a wonderful and larger than life personality.

Being in your company felt special. There was always time for laughter, time for reflection and time for a short history lesson! There are very few people in this world who can make such an impact in the way that you did. Your contribution to this world will live on for a very long time.

Bruno's stories were legendary. He had the remarkable ability to multitask, often searching through his meticulously organised and highly detailed photo collection on his phone mid-conversation. Stone walls, air conditioning grills, feature lights – no problem. He could access an image in a flash and recall the hotel or restaurant where it was taken. If an interesting fact or new idea sparked his curiosity, he’d risk a playful scolding from Laura as he launched into a quick online search on the spot. Bruno was a source of wisdom, and with his broad general knowledge and love of history, he would offer insights and perspectives that made the rest of us reach for Google.
Naturally, good food and fine wine were shared passions. Although we didn’t dine out together often, we regularly hosted one another for dinner. Fresh, high-quality food prepared with love was always on the menu. Upon arriving at our home, if we were mid-preparation, Bruno would head straight to the kitchen to check out the menu. He had a discerning palate to rival a Michelin-starred chef and was always ready to offer feedback after sampling what was on offer. We learned the secret to his famous risotto – especially his truffle risotto: more cream, more butter! It was sooo good. We hope that recipe remains safely stored in the Schöpfer vault.
Bruno and Laura were the ultimate hosts. Hospitality and generosity were the hallmarks of their home. Both were excellent cooks – each with fabulous culinary ideas. This sometimes caused tension in the kitchen, usually resulting in Bruno being (temporarily) banished while Laura completed the final preparations. Bruno also grilled a mean BBQ and took delight in ensuring everyone was well fed: “More meat, anyone?” The evening was never complete without the traditional ritual of an aromatic cigar and a glass of liqueur on the deck for Bruno and Balz, while Laura and I sipped tea inside.
This passion for cooking, savouring fine wine, and sharing meals with friends grew into a regular gathering of six. During a trip to Sicily, we jokingly dubbed ourselves the “Swiss Mafia” – a name that stuck for our dine-in events. At the farmers' market in Syracuse, Bruno was visibly delighted, exploring stalls overflowing with fresh vegetables, seafood, and meat. A shopper’s paradise was followed by three enthusiastic chefs in one kitchen – a true logistical challenge! – which resulted in a magnificent meal of Sicilian delights. We will forever treasure these moments, filled with friendship, laughter, and a couple of bottles of wine. We will continue the Swiss Mafia traditions in Bruno’s name.
Closer to home, time in Flims among the Alps and in the picturesque chalet Bruno designed and built allowed everyone to truly disconnect. Family and friends could enjoy active pursuits like hiking and skiing. Bruno led the way – striding up mountain paths with vigour and skiing straight down at speed. He was strong and fit, clearly at home in this alpine setting. As regulars in the area, the name Schöpfer was a passport to a good table at many of the quaint mountain restaurants such as Startgels and Casa Berendi, both known for their gourmet local fare.
We are in awe of all Bruno achieved in his life as a renowned hotelier and for the many lives he touched. But most of all, we feel deeply fortunate to have called him our friend – to have shared so many meaningful experiences with Bruno and Laura, and to know their wonderful family. We are profoundly saddened by his passing.
Bruno’s greatest legacy lives on in the love he shared with Laura and the way they have shaped the lives of their children – Isabella, Nicholas, and Sophia. We know Bruno lives on through them… so watch this space!

He took joy in a good bottle of wine, which he always shared generously even gifting us once with a beautiful bottle of Chateau Latour for our housewarming. Such a memorable gesture of friendship.

Our lasting memories are of a man always smiling, always full of humour, keenly intelligent but both humble and honest.
My favourite memories are of the Schoepfer Christmas parties; being taken down to the wine cellar, choosing a bottle and nursing it under my arm for the rest of the evening. I think Bruno was equally happy enjoying his wine himself or serving it to others! Bruno’s truffle risotto was the stuff of legend!
A great man, whose presence enriched the lives of those around him. He will be sorely missed.

Wir waren lange Jahre während der Entwicklung des Bürgenstock Projekts in Kontakt: Es war nicht immer einfach, aber Bruno hat mir und meinem Team immer großes Vertrauen geschenkt und das Endergebnis – an welchem er über 9 Jahre mit Leidenschaft gearbeitet hat – ist fantastisch.
Brunos Offenheit, Warmherzigkeit und Charisma werden mir unvergessen bleiben. Ich bin unendlich dankbar, ihn gekannt zu haben.

In den letzten Jahren hat sich unsere Freundschaft noch intensiviert. Wir haben uns oft getroffen, sind zum Mittagessen zusammen gegangen oder haben zusammen telefoniert. Ab uns zu habe ich auch im acasa in Zürich übernachtet und wir haben uns mit Susi Zehnder getroffen. Noch im November habe ich ein Bild aus Saudi Arabien geschickt, wo ich mit einem gemeinsamen Freund zum Nachtessen war. Ich werde auf diese Message nie mehr eine Antwort bekommen. Ich werde Bruno immer in bester Erinnerung behalten. Er wird mir sehr fehlen...

It is difficult to understand why the good die so young, but in Bruno’s case this is so true. He will be truly missed by Laura, his children, extended family and friends. We feel fortunate to now include ourselves as two of his friends.

This news has hit hard and is somewhat unbelievable to take in. An incredible force of nature gone far too soon. It is hard to imagine someone with your amount of energy and zest for life to no longer be a part of it. You were a true Leo, a born leader, courageous, fiercely loyal to those you loved and a fighter right to the very end. You will be remembered for always having a smile on your face ALWAYS (I honestly have no memory of what your face looks like without one), for our conversations about food and life, and your own inspirational life story; one I constantly relay to my son. You have become somewhat of a myth and a legend in my household, “The farm boy who built an empire” except that you were very real and someone inspirational to look up to.
You will be remembered for your love of good wine. I remember you persuading me to try your very fine wine, assuring me that my dislike for wine itself was only due to the fact that I had been drinking the wrong ones; always looking at me for approval after the first sip and me being too polite to tell you that I thought it tasted no better than the ones from Tesco. A lover of great food, always delivering with a passion; something I could definitely relate to. I am just better at eating it than doing the actual cooking. You took me to dinner once and encouraged me to try baby optopus. Wanting to be open minded, I gave it a try even after seeing the suckers on the underneath of the tentacles. I took a mouthful and felt the suckers come loose in my mouth. It took every ounce of my self control to not spit it back out and wipe my tongue clean. After finally managing to swallow it, you looked at me with high hopes and said “Good,” to which I replied “Oh God no, absolutely not,” You then chuckled heartily and removed the rest from my plate to eat yourself. You were so down to earth, kind and easy to be around and I say that as someone who has social anxiety and finds it hard to be around people. You always made it easy, you made everyone feel like family.
You made me laugh ALOT with your lively sense of humour and lack of tact, always calling a spade a spade. There is nothing more refreshing than someone who is not afraid to be unpolitically correct at times.
I had not seen you in a long while, but I have attached a picture of a memory from one of the last times I saw you. We were driving and we saw a rainbow and you slowed to take a picture, which you later sent to me. It made me smile, rainbows being such a beautiful symbol of hope, new beginnings and the connection between heaven and earth. Now, when I see one, I will think of you and of the light and vibrancy that you brought into this world by simply being yourself. I will also think of you and smile whenever there is an opening of fine wine, the smell of a good steak and the scent of a cigar. You will be missed Uncle Bruno, but I know wherever you are, you will continue to shine your light for all to feel.

However, it has felt through the many years of occasion with Nick and the regular visits from Issie and Sophia that Bruno (and Laura) have always been present when we have been together.
The joy and excitement of being in and around the Schoepfer family always stood out as something really special and something that was inspired naturally through their safe and loving family environment.
As a father myself, I have often reflected that these are the bonds that I wish I could emulate for my own family.
From our family we also wish to recognise the amazing generosity of Bruno and Laura for hosting our family at the hotel on our visit to Zurich in Jan 2024. This will be forever be remembered. Sending our love and gratitude.

Bruno's head was in business and hospitality, and very successful with it, but he was also "hip" to the things I wanted to do in the club, and knew the music, and the regulars at the club (he was there often enough - whether to keep an eye on me or to enjoy himself - I liked to think it was the latter).
He frowned at me publicly (but I could tell he liked it) wearing "loud" (but tastefully-tailored!) shorts in the hotel - and my neon shades of odd socks, amused Bruno, while irritating our esteemed GM - Khun Kurt - at the same time. (Meeting him perhaps 10-12 years later somewhere, somehow, the first thing he said was, "Show me your socks"!)
Bruno was the first of many members of hotel management that I met and worked with as I travelled the world for Bacchus International as a DJ, and he is one of my best memories of that time. I was fortunate to have been encouraged and supported by this great man, even if for such a short time.
I managed to stay in touch with him in his future endeavours, and we also met at various events over the next years. I tried to get to see him in London, but it never worked out, and then I congratulated him on his move to Movenpick. Many "movers" in the hotel business that I kept in touch with knew Bruno, and I got my news from them as he continued his endeavours and dreams.
43 years later, after meeting Bruno, and rarely ever seeing him again after August 1983, I sit at my desk at home in Kobe, Japan, with tears in my eyes. Rest in peace, Bruno. You were larger than life. Prepare the nightclub up there for my arrival, my socks are prepared. I promise to play all your requests.

Bruno hat mich in unserer gemeinsamen Zeit im Schweizerhof Bern nachhaltig geprägt. Er hat an mich geglaubt, als ich es selbst noch nicht getan habe, und mir eine grosse Chance gegeben. Er hat mich unterstützt und gefördert.
Ich habe sehr viel von ihm gelernt. Noch heute denke ich an seine Ratschläge und an unsere Gespräche – sie waren oft intensiv, aber immer wohlwollend und respektvoll.
Bruno war für mich ein Visionär, gleichzeitig ein Macher und grosser Förderer. Ich werde ihn immer mit grossem Respekt und tiefer Dankbarkeit in Erinnerung behalten.
Von Herzen alles Gute und viel Kraft für diese schwierige Zeit.

- die Leiter durch die Dachluke, die Du im Anzug hochgehen musstest, heute (immer noch) die schönste Rooftop von Bern ist;
- Du nach dem Wechsel auf iPhone verzweifelt mit zwei Finger auf dem Blackberry Screen der Innenarchitektin zoomen wolltest, um Dir ein Detail anzuschauen 😉;
- Pizza & Rotwein nach 22:30 Uhr bei der zweiten Due Diligence im Kernteam (fast) zum Standard wurde;
- wir als Team gemeinsam Lifestyle, WOW-Effekte für Emotionen von Gästen und nicht nur «Hotels» gebaut haben;
- Du mir Dein uneingeschränktes Vertrauen beim Bau Deines / Eures ACASA Suites geschenkt hast;
- aus Leidenschaft für die Branche, großartige Hotels und Genuss eine langjährige Freundschaft und Verbundenheit entstand;
- Du einmal mehr perfekt auf alles vorbereitet warst und Deinen Weg zielstrebig mit klarem Kopf bestritten hast - wie immer;

In den gespanntesten geschäftlichen Situationen (Bürgenstock) blieb Bruno überlegen und gelassen: „das wird scho guet choo“
Persönlich hat die folgende simple Wende mich geprägt: „Es kommt immer anders“ - denn Bruno meinte es jeweils in einer ermunternden und philosophischen Weise.
Dann, als Arzt habe ich noch nie einen Fall wie Bruno gesehen, der seinen kritischen Krankheitszustand mit so viel Fassung und mutiger Standortsbeurteilung anging.
So und als sehr vollendeter Mensch werde ich Bruno in Erinnerung behalten.

I owe a lot to Bruno , and I shall continue to cherish his memory very long.
He picked me up to head Mövenpick hotels while he had just been appointed at the helm of the Holding. We had met while he was COO of MOHG and already then , as competitors as I was running Méridien hotels, we both respected each other tremendously.
While he was my boss , I have always admired his capacity to grasp complex topics in minutes. One thing I had not , and where he had as a special gift , is his sense of space optimisation for all the hotels we were conceiving together. This added to a quality of focus and a stamina second to none made him what he will be ever be remembered for: one of the finest hoteliers entrepreneurs I have ever come across.
We at times had a different approach , but we never ever had an argument , and I believe that we truly liked each other.
He was also liked by the people he worked with , as he respected them while keeping a sense of humour which made people comfortable.
When I was hesitating to acquire a big house in the south of France , as it was lots of renovation works and a significant investment , he told me , just do it , you’ll be happy there and Claire and you will manage to complete the work and will be forever happy with this estate. And How right he was! I actually feel so sorry that we never found the opportunity to meet there , despite the plans we had to do so.
There are so many memories and anecdotes that tie me to Bruno , but I’ll wait when the time is right to share them with you.
I can’t count the number of times when he shared with me how proud he was with you all..
If there is anything I can do for you , please do not hesitate to write of call me.

Energy, passion, a never - ending thirst for knowledge, kindness, humour and humility - he had all of these in abundance and with no trace of artifice. There are not many with talent, ambition and success who stay true to themselves and remain wonderful people, but Bruno was one of the few.

Mit grosser Bestürzung und tiefer Traurigkeit habe ich vom Tod von Bruno erfahren. Ich wusste um seine schwere Krankheit.
Unsere Wege kreuzten sich zum ersten Mal flüchtig in Kindheit und Jugend, da unsere Väter – eingefleischte Luzerner – befreundet waren und gemeinsam Aktivdienst leisteten.
Wirklich kennengelernt habe ich Bruno dann auf einer Geschäftsreise mit meinem Vater im Mandarin in Bangkok, wo er als F&B-Manager tätig war. Seither begegneten wir uns immer wieder auf meinen Reisen nach Asien – in Kuala Lumpur, Singapur und Hongkong.
Als Bruno CEO der Mövenpick Holding AG in der Schweiz wurde, standen wir in regelmässigem Austausch. Eines Tages fragte er mich, ob ich die CEO-Position von Mövenpick Foods übernehmen wolle, mit dem Ziel, das Ice-Cream-Geschäft in der Region Asien-Pazifik weiterzuentwickeln und auch zu restrukturieren.
Bruno war ein Leader mit grosser Leidenschaft, Weitsicht und einer ansteckenden Energie. In einer intensiven und herausfordernden Zeit konnten wir gemeinsam viel bewegen. Die umfassende Restrukturierung mündete schliesslich in der Entscheidung des Hauptaktionärs, das Mövenpick Ice Cream-Geschäft zu veräussern.
Unsere enge Zusammenarbeit war geprägt von gegenseitigem Vertrauen, tiefem Respekt und Brunos unermüdlichem Optimismus. Uns verband nicht nur die gemeinsame Herkunft aus Luzern, sondern auch eine ähnliche Haltung gegenüber dem Leben und der Arbeit.
Nach Brunos Ausscheiden bei Mövenpick übernahm ich kurze Zeit später die CEO-Position der Mövenpick Holding AG. Es war mir eine Ehre, auf dem soliden Fundament, das er hinterlassen hatte, weiterbauen zu dürfen.
Auch in den Jahren danach blieben wir als Freunde und ehemalige Weggefährten eng verbunden.
Bruno wird mir als charismatischer, liebenswürdiger Mensch, als inspirierender Unternehmer und als prägende Persönlichkeit der internationalen Hospitality-Industrie für immer in Erinnerung bleiben.
Ich bin dankbar für die gemeinsamen Jahre – und ich werde ihn sehr vermissen.

Please accept my sincerest heartfelt condolences in these difficult times. I am still shocked and stunned at this very sad news. During the years I spent at Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts and 6 years with the Bürgenstock Selection, in particular with the development of the Bürgenstock Resort, I shall always remember Bruno as a visionary, charismatic leader, full of life. A genuine hotelier at heart. His dedication and passion inspired many. Rest in peace, Bruno.
I worked at Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group from 1993 to 1999.
Bruno was a force of positivity, with boundless energy and enthusiasm. He always had time for everyone, literally everyone, and made everyone feel positive about themselves. He wore his heart on his sleeve, was dedicated to whatever cause he was fighting, and was by definition, the opposite of nepotism. If everyone in the world was like Bruno, it would be a beautiful place to live in.
My thoughts are with you as you and we all mourn Bruno's passing. My sincerest condolences.
Even for those of us who didn't know him all that well, he truly was a lighthouse and a "tour de force".that we in the industry admired and looked up to.

I had the fortune that Bruno and my paths crossed many many times in our wonderful industry and I always admired his spirit, positive attitude and pragmatic ways. I enjoyed every single moment working together on potential projects when I was still President of Six Senses or sharing wonderful insights together on the International Advisory Board of EHL, as well as the private meetings and meals we shared.
Bruno you will always stay in my memories and I wish you are well taken care of now as you always took care of everyone who came in touch with you!

That was Bruno. Interesting, insightful, not in the slightest bit shy in offering his opinions-- whether on the performance of the Swiss ski team (there is always room for improvement) or the political situation anywhere in the world (do you know what they should do? Bruno did)-- and to whom people were drawn. A raconteur. A bon vivant. A man who lived life fully, and who pursued his ambitions and dreams without hesitation.
Bruno was much more than that, though. He was a man who cared deeply about others, and would go far out of his way to help them without a second thought. He was kind, generous, and constitutionally hospitable. He was honest and forthright, and a person to turn to if ever you needed trusted advice. He touched many lives, and I count myself lucky that he touched mine.
I wish he could share the moments in our lives to come, but it seems only fitting to focus on celebrating the wonderful life that he led, and be grateful that he was in ours. I will forever appreciate the time that we spent together. I will miss learning from him while he cooked stunning food, sharing a glass of wine that he would, with staggering understatement, describe as "quite nice," taking in the mountains on the run down after a mountain coffee at Vorab, and especially hearing his stories, delivered with that inimitable Bruno flair. Most of all, I will simply miss his company. I will miss him.

My sincere condolences. Bruno was of course a remarkable hotelier and entrepreneur, however what also needs te be remembered is his passion for high quality hospitality education and by doing so developing talent for the hospitality industry. He devoted lots of his precious both formally as member of the International Advisory Board as well as informally by connecting the school leadership with relevant personalities in his network. Bruno was very supportive to me personally as well as he understood the importance to align EHL's direction with the needs of the global and Swiss hospitality business.

Mit herzlicher Anteilnahme aus Thailand. Es war mir ein Privileg, Bruno gekannt zu haben.
Im März 2000 haben sich unsere Wege erstmals gekreuzt – bei der Firma FutureLog, die ich später als CEO leiten durfte. Seit 25 Jahren durfte ich Dich beruflich und menschlich begleiten – zuletzt leider weniger, was mich immer noch sehr berührt.
Du warst nicht nur ein Visionär der Hotellerie, sondern vor allem ein Mentor. Nicht nur für mich, sondern für viele Talente dieser Branche. Ich habe Dich dreimal verlassen – und Du hast mich dreimal zurückgeholt. Jedes Mal mit Verständnis für meine berufliche Entwicklung, mit Unterstützung und Vertrauen.
Unsere gemeinsame Reise begann mit FutureLog und strategischen Projekten für die Mövenpick Gruppe. Später eröffneten wir den Schweizerhof Bern – ein Meilenstein und einzigartiges Projekt, dass uns alle gefordert hat. Dein Credo «Fordern und Fördern» prägte meinen Führungsstil genauso wie Deinen. Du warst ein Leader, der Räume für Entwicklung schuf und stets hinter mir stand – auch gegenüber den Eigentümern. Du sagtest oft: „Ich sorge dafür, dass Du den vollen Werkzeugkasten hast.“ Und genau das hast Du getan – für das Team in Bern wie auch für das Team in Zug. Die Auszeichnung «Hotelier des Jahres» für das Team des Schweizerhofs Bern ist in grossem Masse auch Dein Verdienst – sine qua non.
Auch bei der Eröffnung Deines Herzensprojekts Acasa Suites war Deine Gastfreundschaft spürbar. Du hast immer Gastgeber mit Managerqualitäten gesucht – nie umgekehrt. Du hast verstanden, dass Hotellerie ein People Business ist – und wie man Emotionen schafft, in Gebäuden und Menschen. Ich bin Dir dankbar, dass ich Dich auch in diesem Projekt unterstützen durfte.
Du, Bruno, hast nicht nur Projekte, sondern vor allem Menschen erfolgreich gemacht. Du warst und bleibst der Mentor meines Lebens – von Dir habe ich am meisten gelernt. Du hast Servant Leadership gelebt, lange bevor es ein Begriff war.
Vieles von meinem heutigen Wissen verdanke ich Dir. Dieses Wissen darf ich nun weitergeben – auch an junge Talente. So wirst Du nicht nur in meinem Herzen weiterleben, sondern auch durch all jene, die von Deinem Wirken profitieren. Für mich warst Du eine Legende der internationalen Luxushotellerie – und Legenden sterben nie.
Bei einer Zigarre und einem guten Glas Wein werde ich an unsere gemeinsamen Momente denken – an die fordernden, vor allem aber an die schönen. Und an Dein Lachen, das uns alle begleitet hat.

Opening a hotel is always quite a stressful task. But, with you Bruno, this task became so much easier.
Your enthusiasm, combined with your knowledge, your qualities as a person and your tremendous team spirit, contributed to the Shangri-La Hotel (KL)
being voted, after only 3 months of operation, the best hotel in Malaysia. Voted; the best new business hotel in the world. How great was that.
I sincerely wish we could have worked together longer, on other projects.
Unfortunately, after 2 years, we had to go our separate ways, due to circumstances beyond our control.
Your career was one to be admired! You achieved what many aspire too, but never achieve.
Your passing is way too soon, but I’m sure you will be remembered by many for a long, long time.

Like so many others, we were utterly shocked and saddened to receive the news of Bruno's untimely passing. Bruno and I worked together in Mandarin Oriental in the mid 90s in the Corporate Office - him running Operations, me Sales and Marketing. We clicked straightaway ! I learned so much from him. He was such an experienced hotelier and I admired his straight talk and practical approach as well as his great sense of humour. He always told it like it is. Bruno of course with his great talent, went on to far greater heights and happily we stayed in touch. Some years later, he visited Hong Kong and we had dinner together in The Mandarin where he showed me his latest personal project. Condominiums in a village in Switzerland called Flims. After some lovely wine and a good meal, I put a reserve on one of them and on my next visit to Europe, I went via Zurich where Bruno took me to see the site. It was snowing a blizzard and we couldn't see more than 2 feet in front of our noses but Bruno assured me it would be a good purchase and so I went through with it. Who was I to doubt my friend ?! We have never looked back. We absolutely love our small piece of his country and we would always try to meet up with him and Laura when time allowed. One year while ski-ing with my daughter, she tore her ACL and Bruno and Laura had us to stay in Zug where they couldn't do enough for us as we sought medical help. I have fond memories of smoking a cigar and enjoying a nightcap in their lovely home that night. We always stayed in touch and swopped hotel industry happenings from time to time. We had dinner with him in his Acasa Suites property just outside of Zurich. Incredible entrepreneurialism !
Bruno was an absolute giant of a man with a big heart. Thoroughly honest, completely trustworthy, incredibly hardworking, entrepreneurial, reliable, engaging and most of all, intellectually curious. He was always busy and yet could seem to multi-task like no-one else I know. I last spoke to him in December but had no idea he was unwell. Typical Bruno not to complain I suppose.
We already miss him and I have thought of little else these last 48 hours or so since we received this news.
Dearest Laura, Nicholas, Isabella and Sophia - we wish you God's comfort as you journey through the void left by Bruno's departure. You should know that Bruno was a fine man and much loved and admired by so many, especially me.
He's now at peace and we will remember him with so much affection.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Bruno’s passing and my thoughts are with you at this difficult time. This memory wall is a fantastic way to honour such an absolute legend of the game.
There are so many brilliant memories that I have of him and so genuinely grateful for the love and hospitality that you’ve shown me over the years. There are very few people in this world that carry the same gravitas as Bruno and yet all the memories I have of him are filled with humour and warmth.
I have a lot of stories from over the years which typically revolve around his great cooking and hosting, his inability to tell you all the rules when playing card games, taking it as a personal attack if you turned down a Kirsch and his love for the family.
A man who couldn’t sit still and didn’t think of haus coffee as alcoholic, he was great content to watch playing articulate.

Ihr wisst, wie sehr ihr und Bruno mir am Herzen liegt. Es gibt keine Worte, um meine Trauer auszudrücken und es ist unfassbar schwer mir die Zukunft ohne Brunos Humor, Wissen, Ansporn und Lachen vorzustellen. Ich finde Trost in dem Gedanken, dass er gewollt hätte, dass wir alle wieder aufstehen und genau so weitermachen, wie er es uns beigebracht hat: Mit ganz viel Herzblut, Humor, Hartnäckigkeit und Freude am Leben. Ich verdanke Bruno wirklich viel und er hat mich über die Jahre sehr stark geprägt, nicht nur beruflich, sondern vor allem auch menschlich. You were a commander in the world, your accomplishments speak for themselves. But I mostly knew you at home, where you weren’t even the commander of the household. That distinction goes to Laura. Still, you were earnest, warm, friendly, inviting, hospitable. I will miss spending the hours with you, playing cards, cheering on the Swiss during ski racing events, eating the second and third helpings of steak even though Sophia told you to stop serving me. You were so excited for me to visit every museum in London. You were so delighted when I paid you the compliment about your knowledge of particle physics. But you were impressive, your knowledge of the world informed by both the endless hours of documentaries you watched at home and the career that took you all over the world. I am thankful for every moment we spent together. I will miss you.



I had the pleasure of working with Bruno during my time with QNH and Katara Hospitality – Qatar. His work on the Bürgenstock Resort in Luzern was truly inspiring and remains a lasting legacy. We stayed in touch, and since moving to Asia, I’ve even met some of his former colleagues.
A colleague I truly admired, and a hotelier of rare caliber.

Mit grosser Trauer habe ich eine der schwierigsten Nachrichten meines Lebens erhalten, denn durch Bruno habe ich gelernt, was es bedeutet, ein guter Mensch zu sein.

Ich werde Bruno immer in bester Erinnerung behalten wie Z.b die Flasche Wasser, die er mir mitgebracht hat, als ich euren Dach im August 2024 geputzt habe. 😊 Es war eine Geste von einem super netten Menschen.
Wir werden ihn alle vermissen, aber sein ansteckendes Lächeln werden wir immer in Erinnerung behalten.

Bruno was the kindest host, and clearly knew his way around a steak, of which he made several, over a lunch complete with the clearest skies, literal flames burning in a corner for warmth, and a hungry bird, circling over our meal, all while he reminisced over time spent in various parts of Asia.
One only wishes we had more time. But I know Bruno will always live on in his children (Loki included), who possess so much of his tenacity, his passion, and his joy for life. He was gone too soon, but he will always be remembered and loved.

wir haben einen grossartigen visionären Macher in der Hotellerie verloren. Doch nicht nur das einen wahren Pionier, jemanden verlieren, der es verstanden hat, mit grosser Erfahrung und Wissen zu führen. Du hast uns jedoch nicht nur dein Wissen und deine Erfahrung gegeben, sondern auch vielen anderen Talenten die Chance, diesen Weg zu gehen und dabei zu wachsen.
In deinen Projekten haben wir stets die besten Lösungen gefunden und dabei immer grossen Spass an den gemeinsamen Erfolgen gehabt. Auch wenn du viel zu früh von dieser Welt gegangen bist, werden viele der grossartigen Projekte, die du angestossen hast, weiterleben.
Ich danke dir von Herzen, dass ich Teil dieser Reise sein durfte.

PS: Ich werde die Fahrt nie vergessen, wie Du mich damals wegen der Lebensmittelvergiftung ins Krankenhaus gebracht hast – das war nicht selbstverständlich und sagt so viel über Dich aus.

We are at a loss for words and are extremely sad to hear of your passing. You have always been much more to us than just our boss; you were a mentor, a great inspiration, almost a father figure and we are so thankful we were able to spend the time together we did. We have learnt so much from you, and to this day we think you of you often, what would Bruno say, how would he handle it? Who knows where we would be today, if you hadn't supported both of us as much as you have.
Dearest Laura, dear family, we wish you a lot of strength during this difficult time and are with you in thoughts.
We will open a bottle and drink a glass to you, Bruno.

I had the absolute pleasure of spending a couple new years with Bruno and his family at their chalet in Flims. I have such fun memories of trekking down the piste (on foot) from a restaurant, at night, carrying flame torches. The Schoepfer family standing together, singing along to Cher's 'Believe' with champagne flutes in their hands. Bruno smoking a cigar on the balcony. Honestly the best new years ever. But the real icing on the cake was Bruno's epic fireworks displays. He was truly the fireworks king. He also made the best mushroom risotto I've ever tasted and was especially keen to show me his special risotto trick of putting the pan in the snow for a bit to cool down.
Bruno was very thoughtful and always made sure everyone had a nice time. I really enjoyed the times he drove me to the train station and I got to ask him questions and hear his stories. He was such a great story teller. I loved hearing about all the shenanigans he got up to as a child growing up on the farm.
Of all the hotels Bruno was involved in, the only one I've had the pleasure of staying at was his Acasa Suites in Zurich. It's such a beautiful hotel and you can really see his skill and experience as a hotelier in all of the hotel's thoughtful details. Every member of staff there I spoke to thought so highly of Bruno, which I think really shows what a great person he was in both his personal and professional lives.
Bruno lived life to the absolute fullest. Rest in peace.

Bruno's lasting legacy and spirit can still be felt here on the Bürgenstock today! He opened an icon of Swiss hospitality along with a dedicated team.
