Venecia “Venie” Padua Begonia

She spent a lifetime caring for others, and in return, she gave us a family, a home, and a thousand memories. We celebrate the remarkable life of Venie Begonia.

Obituary

With grateful hearts and profound love, we celebrate the life of Venie Begonia: a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, friend, caregiver, entertainer, and the unforgettable matriarch of our family.

Venie was born in 1936 in La Union, Philippines. As one of the eldest among her siblings, she made the extraordinary sacrifice of setting aside her own education to help care for her family. That spirit of selflessness became the foundation of her life—a life defined not by what she accumulated, but by how deeply she cared for others.

Never afraid of hard work or new beginnings, Venie lived many remarkable lives. She operated a perfume business, ran a neighborhood butchery, owned a beauty supply store, and eventually worked at a boarding school, where she met the love of her life, Mike Begonia. Together they married, started a family, and immigrated to the United States in 1978 in search of greater opportunity.

Together they raised three children—Richen, Jocelyn, and Fatima—first in Los Angeles, California, and later in Chino Hills, where Venie spent most of her life. There, she became the heart of an ever-growing family. Her home was a place where no one stayed hungry for long, where stories were shared around the table, and where family always came first. She helped raise her grandchildren with endless devotion. To them, she was far more than a grandmother; she was a second parent, a teacher, a protector, and one of life’s greatest constants.

When Mike suffered an aneurysm that robbed him of much of his speech and memory, Venie once again answered life’s call with extraordinary strength. She became his devoted caregiver, patiently helping him rehabilitate while continuing to care for everyone else. She never stopped putting the people she loved first.

If sacrifice was the foundation of Venie’s life, energy and joy was its color.

She found beauty everywhere. She lovingly tended her flowers and garden and expressed her love through food, especially the Ilocano dishes that connected her family to their Filipino roots. Because she often said she never truly had the chance to enjoy her youth, she embraced fashion with contagious enthusiasm. She knew every thrift store worth visiting, never passed up a bargain, delighted in Costco samples, and built a wardrobe as colorful, eclectic, and unforgettable as she was.

Venie had a personality that could never be contained. She was the life of every party and a beloved leader in the Filipino American Senior Citizens Club, where she organized celebrations and built lasting friendships. An accomplished ballroom dancer, she was admired for her grace, confidence, and infectious energy, earning countless awards and the admiration of dance partners who eagerly waited for their turn to share the floor with her.

She was also a born entertainer. Her wit was quick, her timing impeccable, and her stories unforgettable. She could make an entire room erupt in laughter with a single outlandish remark.

But those who loved Venie also knew that she experienced life in full color. She felt everything deeply. She could be fiercely opinionated, dramatic, stubborn, wonderfully combative, and endlessly tenacious. She wasn’t afraid to challenge people, fight for what she believed, or let her emotions be known. Loving Venie meant embracing the full spectrum of who she was—the laughter and the tears, the tenderness and the fire, the calm and the occasional storm. Yet every part of her came from the same place: an enormous heart that cared deeply. Her greatest strength and her greatest vulnerability were one and the same. She loved with her whole heart, and because of that, she lived with extraordinary intensity.

She never drove a car, but that never slowed her down. She walked miles through Chino Hills, rode the bus wherever she needed to go, and seemed to possess endless energy. She knew everyone, and everyone knew Venie. Whether she was catching up with neighbors, searching for the best deal in town, or finding another hidden treasure at a thrift store, she moved through the world with curiosity, determination, and joy.

After Mike’s passing, Venie continued living independently for many years with the same resilience that had carried her through every chapter of her life. In her final years, she was lovingly surrounded by her children, sisters, grandchildren, and extended family. She passed away peacefully, embraced by those whose lives she had spent decades nurturing.

Venie’s greatest gift was care. She cared for her siblings before herself. She cared for her husband through illness. She cared for her children and grandchildren with unwavering devotion. She cared for friends, neighbors, flowers, traditions, and anyone who crossed her path. Her love was expressed not only through words, but through meals prepared with her hands, miles walked to visit someone she loved, dances shared with friends, bargains found with delight, and countless quiet acts of generosity that often went unseen.

She taught us that a meaningful life is not measured by ease or perfection, but by how fully we show up for the people we love. She showed us that strength can be tender, that resilience can be joyful, and that even an imperfect life can be extraordinarily beautiful.

She leaves behind a legacy of resilience, compassion, laughter, determination, generosity, and unconditional love. Her vibrant spirit lives on in the family she built, the traditions she passed down, the gardens she planted, the recipes she shared, and the countless lives she touched.

She left every room brighter, every table fuller, every dance floor livelier, and every life she touched better than she found it.

We will miss her deeply, remember her always, and celebrate her forever.
