Obituary

In Loving Memory of
Valerie Ann Challenger
March 29, 1933 – July 26, 2026
Valerie Ann Challenger, age 93, a devoted mother, educator, and lifelong learner, was born March 29, 1933, and passed away peacefully on July 26, 2026, from dementia, at her home in North Ridgeville, Ohio.
Valerie was born to Joseph Mealy and Leila (Roots) Mealy, one of five siblings alongside Joseph Jr., Maime Stanton, Robert, and Paul. While an undergraduate at Ohio State University, she met Roderique Challenger, a naval pilot who would become the love of her life. The two were married on August 5, 1955. Together they raised two children, Kimberly, born April 22, 1956, and Victor, born January 27, 1961.
Valerie went on to earn her undergraduate degree in Education from the University of Cincinnati, followed by a Master of Education from Xavier University. Her master's dissertation explored the "Use of Stimulant Drugs on Hyperactive Children," reflecting her deep commitment to understanding and supporting the needs of children. She dedicated her career to shaping young minds, retiring from the Cincinnati Board of Education after many years of service.
Outside of her professional life, Valerie found joy and creative expression through her many passions — genealogy, knitting, and multimedia art. Whether tracing the branches of her family tree, creating something with her hands, or exploring new artistic mediums, she approached each pursuit with curiosity and heart.
Valerie was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Leila Mealy; her siblings, Joseph Jr., Maime Stanton, Robert Mealy, and Paul Mealy; and her beloved husband of nearly 65 years, Roderique Challenger, who passed on July 3, 2020.
She is survived by her children, Kimberly and Victor Challenger; her grandchildren, Vincent Lance Challenger and Jayce Roderique Challenger; and all who were touched by her passion for learning, family history, and art.
Valerie will be remembered for her love of teaching, her devotion to family, and the creativity she poured into everything she touched. Her legacy lives on in the lives she shaped, both in the classroom and at home.
