With sincerest condolences to The Burchenson family. Aunt Val taught me many life lessons, she was my grade 1 teacher. I remember vividly, a composition she asked us to write about "My Mother". I never did the homework and joined the line to have my work checked. I copied the work from one of my friends...his mother's name and all.(youthful folly😆) but I paid dearly that morning😭, as she was beside her self with disbelief that i copied the boy's work, she remarked " a when Dew name change?, who change Dew name?, Dew a mi Sister how nuh baddy nuh tell mi seh har name change to M..... Y....?
Needless to say to this day, I chart my own course and follow my own path. Lessons learnt.
The songs she composed and or taught, I still sing and quote" Where here you walk shall crowd into a shade" when The late great HP Patterson's tenure ended she composed "You'll get a better reward" anybody remembers?
Aunt Val's formidable leadership, vision, love, kindness, grace, worship services @ devotion, ingenuity, pride and joy she felt for every success, serving the underserved, modeled Jesus in everyway, everday uniting the school & community.
The community of Dallas Castle has been forever changed, her impact, thru education will last for generations to come.
May light perpetual guide you home Lady B. We love ❤️ you.

Singing...."How can I say thanks for all the things You've done for me?
Things so undeserved yet you gave to prove Your love to me. The voices of a million angels could not express my gratitude all that I am and ever hope to be I owe it all to you.........
Mrs B, my mentor, my motivator..always pushing me to do my best, always loved when i would sing, she would always say "continue to aim for the stars son..i am proud of you". I always admired her love for God and how she worshipped and how she would have dealt with persons. One favourite memory is when she would have said to us as students "i am not running any buggu yagga school"
Today i bid you farewell, knowing that your work on earth has ended. You would have lived a true example of John 9 verse 4, you would have worked the work of him that sent you while it was day now your night has come...
You will be missed...the many times you got stern on me to stay in line. I am forever thankful.
Sleep well Mrs B until we meet again.

EDUCATOR EXTRAORDINAIRE
Mrs Valerie Burchenson was my favourite teacher and best employer. She cared deeply for her students and did all that was in her power to ensure that they learnt and achieved at their highest potential. If a student was capable of getting 100% and did not do so, 'stinky' would make up for the shortfall. She did not leave any of her students behind.
I had the pleasure of spending a few nights at her house with a few of my classmates in final preparations for our Common Entrance examinations. She really drilled us until we got where she wanted us. If she was having lesson classes and parents could not afford to pay, that was not a deterrent to her offering her services. My siblings and I are greatly appreciative of all she did for us.
Why she was able to act so selflessly was that she was a Christian. She loved the Lord, and this was evident in her interactions with her students, her colleagues and her employees. When I visited her church, I always admired her reverence and sincerity in worship.
She left an indelible mark on my life; she will be deeply missed.

🕊 A Tribute to Mrs. Burchenson.
Mrs. Burchenson was a virtuous, God-fearing woman whose light touched everyone. She was warmly supportive, especially when I was preparing to sit my Common Entrance Exam, giving up her Saturdays for extra classes and offering me two nights each week for extra lessons. Initially, I thought she was too strict, but I later realized her discipline was an act of love.
I remember a test I did poorly on; she grabbed the belt, and I burst into tears, saying, "STINKY!, It doesn't even touch my body yet!" She looked at me and said,
"You sleep 66, you walk 66, you talk 66, you eat 66!
You think you can go anywhere with that?"
Lord have mercy. I'll never forget that day!🤣
Mrs. Burchenson wasn't just a teacher. She was a mentor, a guide, and a second mother to so many of us. She saw potential where we couldn't see it in ourselves. She believed in us when we doubted ourselves. She pushed us to rise higher, not just in school, but in life.
Her patience, her kindness, her compassion - they reached beyond the classroom. She taught lessons that no textbook could hold: lessons about discipline, respect, faith, and perseverance.
She taught us that greatness is born from hard work and love.
Thank you, Mrs. Burchenson, for being an incredible teacher and an inspiration.🙏
Your dedication, your laughter, your strength, and your love for teaching changed countless lives.
As the saying goes, "It takes a big heart to shape little minds."
You had one of the biggest hearts of all.💐
I prayed that the family would find comfort, strength, and peace in knowing how deeply she was loved and how greatly she is missed.🥲
May God surround you all with his peace that surpasses all understanding.🙏
Mrs. B. Thank you for your love, your lessons, your prayers, and yes, even that belt, STINKY!
You gave so much of yourself to shape the lives of others, and your light will never fade. 🙏
🌸Sleep peacefully in Paradise, Mrs B. Until we meet again, may your soul rest in the everlasting arms of God.🙏🕊💐

Mrs Valerie Burchenson, Aunt Val, Mrs B, such a remarkable individual who dedicated her life to shaping the minds and hearts of countless students, including my own children.
Miss B,was more than just an educator; she was a true woman of God, a mentor, a role model, and a guiding light in so many lives. Her passion for teaching, her kindness, and her unwavering commitment to the success of many remains unfathomable. Aunt Val, inspired generations of young minds to reach for their dreams.
I recall the countless times my children came home from school with stories of Mrs Burchenson's compassion, empathy, and generosity. Whether it was staying late to help with a project, offering words of encouragement, or simply being a listening ear. She made each student feel seen, heard, and valued.
Her impact on our school community and the community at large is immeasurable, and her absence will be deeply felt. However, her, legacy will live on through the countless lives she touched, the lessons she taught, and the love she shared.
I remember when She could still talk and she would send Mommy voice note, she always ask how I was doing and to say Hi. Mommy would forward those message to me and it touched my heart to know that even in her sickness she still found a way to show love.Such a genuine soul!!!!
As we say goodbye to this incredible educator, mother, Aunt, mentor, sister, role- model, an irreplaceable gem,we take comfort in knowing that her spirit will continue to inspire us to be better, to do better, and to make a difference in the lives of others.
Rest in peace, Mrs B.. Your memory will be a blessing to us all.

My Aunt — My Spiritual Advisor, Protector, and Friend
How great is our God, I sing today,
Remembering you in every way.
Your voice beside mine in sacred song,
Made even weak hearts brave and strong.
“His Voice Makes the Difference,” we’d raise,
And heaven smiled at our shared praise.
His voice made the difference then—
And now, I long to hear it again.
You were my shield when storms drew near,
My steady guide through grief and fear.
When Daddy left this world behind,
You spoke of faith that calmed my mind.
You said, “Stand firm, God’s word is true,
Your father’s love still lives in you.”
And when I stumbled, hurt, unsure,
You stood beside me—strong, mature.
You helped me chase my teaching dream,
Believed in me when none else seemed.
My English teacher, mentor, guide,
In you, both strength and grace abide.
You were my role model, my light,
Who turned my tears to hope so bright.
Our sleepovers, how sweet they were,
With whispered talks till midnight’s blur.
No fear, no shame, just truth and care,
I told you things I’d never share.
We’d laugh with accentuated hope and joy,
Even after the hardest weeks.
Those moments—safe, sincere, and true—
Are pieces of my heart with you.
Rest now, my aunt, in heaven’s peace,
Your love on earth will never cease.
I’ll hold our songs, our talks, our prayer,
For one day, I’ll meet you there.
Until that dawn when pain will end—
I’ll love you always, my aunt, my friend.

A beautiful soul has completed her earthly journey, but the impact she made will live on forever. Mrs. Burchenson was more than a principal — she was a gentle guide, a steady presence, and a true example of what it means to lead with grace, patience, and love.
She nurtured children not just with rules and lessons, but with kindness, fairness, and a genuine belief in who we could become. So many of us carry pieces of her in the way we speak, the way we treat others, and the way we choose to stand tall in this world.
Her laughter, her firm but caring voice, her warm smile in the schoolyard — those memories will always be ours to keep. She didn’t just shape a school… she shaped lives, and her legacy will continue in every student she ever helped to raise.
May she rest in eternal peace, knowing she planted seeds that will continue to bloom for generations. Thank you, Mrs. Burchenson. You were loved, appreciated, and will never be forgotten.

Mrs. Valerie Burchenson - a woman wrapped in grace,
Modest in spirit, caring at heart,
Gentle in touch, yet firm in her faith.
An extraordinary woman of God,
Whose light cannot be measured in ordinary words.
For she is nothing less than Legendary.
More than a teacher, more than a mentor,
More than the cherished “church aunt” to many -
She is my grandmother,
A steady pillar in our community,
A quiet storm of wisdom, a beacon of hope, love, and strength.
A living example of what it means to lead with God,
To love with purpose,
And to walk with integrity.
Valerie Burchenson = LEGEND

A few weeks ago in a Maxwell Leadership Training at work, we were asked to identify a couple people who have been instrumental in shaping our lives. I owe so much of who I am today to Mrs. Burchenson. Those summer classes on your verandah that prepared us for Common Entrance. The occasional slap from that leather belt - stinky. I indicated a preference for 3 high schools when I was to take common entrance in 1989 and passed for one which I knew nothing about but she selected that school, as my number one choice. I went on to attend the best High School in Jamaica - Kingston College, that further moulded me into the man, the citizen and the leader I have become. Rest in Peace Mrs. Burchenson. It was a privilege to visit with you and Mr. Butchenson when I attended the graduation at Dallas two years ago. My prayer and condolences goes out to your family.

In Loving Memory of Mrs. Valerie Burchenson
Educator • Mentor • Family
A Life of Purpose and Compassion
It is with deep sorrow and profound respect that we remember Mrs. Valerie Burchenson—a remarkable educator, mentor, and cherished member of our extended family.
Mrs. Burchenson was more than a teacher. She was a guiding light, a compassionate soul, and a tireless advocate for the potential within every individual. Her classroom was a sanctuary of growth, where judgment had no place and every student was seen, heard, and valued. She never cared about where we came from, what we looked like, or the challenges we carried. What mattered to her was who we were—and the potential we possessed.
Her belief in the power of education was matched only by her belief in people. She nurtured minds, uplifted spirits, and shaped lives with grace, patience, and unwavering kindness. For those of us fortunate enough to be mentored by her, she was a source of wisdom and encouragement, always pushing us to be better—not just academically, but as human beings. She did not want us to celebrate the fact that we got 98 out of 100, she wanted us to be concerned about the two that we missed.
To be taught by Mrs. Burchenson was to be uplifted. To be mentored by her was to be empowered. And to be loved by her was to know the true meaning of grace.
Mrs. Burchenson’s legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched. Her compassion, her integrity, and her quiet strength will continue to inspire us. Though she is no longer with us in body, her spirit remains deeply woven into the fabric of our hearts and communities.
To her family: Thank you for sharing her with us. Her impact is immeasurable, and her memory will forever be a blessing. We hope you find comfort in knowing that she is in God’s loving embrace.
With love, gratitude, and deepest condolences.

Mrs. Burchenson (affectionately called Mother B) was a phenomenal, caring, one of a kind, good woman. She was a Christian, teacher extraordinaire, mother of so many of us, and so much more.
I will never forget Mrs. Burchenson's testimony about how it was at a funeral service that she gave her life to the Lord and she did not "look back."
There are some songs that always remind me of Mrs. Burchenson - two of them being: "The Lord's my Shepherd (sang to the tune of the Happy Wanderer)" and "I love to go a-wandering along the mountain track." I also remember her original song - "A reading school is what we want."
As a little girl, I so wanted to join the group, led by Mrs Burchenson, that went caroling; but, my mother thought I was too small to manage the journey, which at times could be walking from Dallas to Hope River and back. My brothers and some of my friends were always included, while I could only look out as the group passed my gate, lustily singing Christmas Carols.
As a teenager, it was my pleasure to return the sentiments, as my church group went Caroling on Christmas mornings, and we routinely stopped at Mrs Burchenson's gate and sung Carols. We would not leave until she turned on her light and wished us a Merry Christmas.
Mother B was always a part of my life and was instrumental in providing much needed guidance and advice. At my wedding she toasted my parents but did not miss the opportunity to sing my praises.
Mrs Burchenson was such a community person and was integral in the planning of so many of the events and celebrations, even if she worked behind the scenes, you best believe that she was almost always the mastermind. She believed in giving people their "flowers" while they are alive and can appreciate it.
Mother B pushed me to do things that I had no interest in doing, but she always convinced me that I should.
Mrs Burchenson had me serve on the SCOPE, PTA and past students Association of our school; as well as being on the Community Council and CDC committees; planning functions for HP, and so much more. Rest assured that all her efforts in pushing me out of my comfort zone were always supported by Mr. Burchenson. What a couple they were: always able to see the best in us and pushed us to achieve more than some of us cared to dream.
There is so much I have done with Mother B - time or space will not permit me to share; but I must say that I knew that she loved me and I loved her right back.
I am blessed to be loved by her and Mr B.❤️🙏
As the song writer says, "when you have done all that you can and there's nothing left to do, you just stand, watch the Lord see you through...just STAND". Mother B stood for a "minute" and has moved on to await the great getting up morning. Hallelujah!
So long, my mother, you came, you saw, you made a difference and has positively impacted a generation. Your legacy lives on. You will be greatly missed, and like the great HP Patterson, YOU will never die.❤️🙏🏽

My teaching career started at Dallas and Mrs Burchenson was my mentor. I remember her conducting a reading programme and I had to take over from her. She guided me and I was able to successfully complete it.
The mornings of carolling from Free Gate to Crosd Pass. We didnt have light then and do the "Bottle Torch" was our light. I also remember the entire school matching from Parish Mango back to school singing "I love to go a wandering. These marches had the boys beating Packoot drums. These memories will remain a life time. Sleep.well.my angel you have run your race well. Condolences to the family.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

“In her self-assured "stride," her indomitable faith in God, her bright smile, her grace, her love for people and her bold posture…she stood tall and stood out in our community. All these things make her that "phenomenal woman"—that is, an extraordinary, spectacular woman.”
This best describes Mrs. Valerie Burchenson, the teacher, community leader, church sister, mother and friend. People like you make this world a better place….she left behind footprints in the sand of life and has left her mark in the lives of all who knew her. To know her was to love her 💞Mrs. B, a Proverbs 31 woman, worth more than rubies… We miss you yes but Jesus loves you best … sleep on my beloved, sleep and take your rest until that great getting up morning, the crown of eternal life to claim. I’m broken 💔💔💔but GOD🙏🏽
THE RIGHTEOUS WILL
SHINE FORTH AS THE SUN in the kingdom of their FATHER.

Today as I reflect on one of the most influential person in my life, who played a very crucial role in shaping my life in society, my principal Mrs Valerie Burchenson. It's an honor to write these positive words about her, She did not just teach me, she inspired, guided and encouraged me to become better version of myself.
In the earlier years of my life, Mrs Burchenson added the most vibrant colors. She was not just an educator, she was also a mentor that guided me and so many others in and around my community and many other communities in East Rural, St Andrew, Jamaica. Mrs Burchenson was one of the Architect of my upbringing.
She ignited my curiosity and fueled my desire for knowledge. And so today, I do not only mourn her death but I celebrate the wonderful life she lived.
One of my fond memory of her, is when she would sit at the classroom door, and each child would have to read to her. Mrs Burchenson always encouraged me to do good in life, I also remember when I was migrating to the USA in 1997 I stopped by her house and she looked me in the eyes and said “look at me“, I was a bit nervous and shy but I did, and she said “don’t go to America and get caught up” she continued by saying “make me proud but most of all make your mother and your community proud”. Those words stuck with me for the 28 and a half years I’ve lived in America. When I was young and certain negative influences came my way, one of the biggest impact on my decision making about some lifestyle that presented itself to me I always wondered how will Mrs Burchenson feel if someone tell her that I make some stupid decision in life, and just because of that love, respect and fear of disappointing her I always choose to walk the straight path and be a law abiding citizen in life. Thanks be to God I did get the opportunity to tell her thanks in life. Now in death I am telling her husband, children, families and friends thanks for sharing Mrs Burchenson with me my entire community and by extension my immediate family in particular my sister Michelle Levy.
May her soul rest in eternal peace.

Mrs Bee, oh what memories I have of thee, a sweeter soul, I am yet to see.
On this human journey, you have made your mark, now it is up to us to fuel that spark.
On one occasion, in church, you asked me to stand, to be counted as the only male teacher of your clan. In that moment, I didn't realise, the pride you felt, that I am a product of your hand.I hope my 20 years in your vocation, was sufficient to show, my gratitude in learning, how to grow.
I remember the classic lessons in preparation and they have served me well. Those many free extra lessons, meals, shelter and LOVE, paved the way. Your SEMINAL impact we celebrate today. A virtuous woman you most definitely were and you treated us fairly despite the stern persona you bare.
In what turned out to be our last goodbye, your fixed pleasant stare and flickering fingers said it all, as those remaining three fingers signed...I Love You 🤟

Oh Auntie Auntie
I miss you Soo much…. Already
A legacy of wisdom and love you left.
I remember the first time I met auntie, I was calling her Aunty Valerie, (think she got annoyed lol) she said Vanessa you don’t have to keep saying that just say Aunt Val or Auntie.. but it was the utmost respect I had for her.
After I met her in my teenage years, she transformed my life and made me into the young lady I am today.. I remembered going to Dallas school and I came third in the class with an average of 70%, I got two good slap from Auntie (I will never forget, don’t think my dad even knew about this until he reads this lol) then I came third again but with an average of 87% and no slap. She said it’s your full potential I want you to be despite about who’s in front..
I miss you already Auntie but your legacy lives on from your random on the spot gospel songs, your kindness, wisdom and most importantly your love for the Lord.
We love you.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Valerie Burchenson through a friend Donna Shaw SIP.
Mrs. Burchenson was very warm, hospitable and a no nonsense person. I was in high school at the time and will never forget her lil motherly advice as she encouraged me to keep focus in school and be the best at what I can be. I thank you.
My deepest condolences to the family. Please know she was well loved!

Your mother’s passing is a heavy loss, but her spirit and love will keep shining through you. The strength and compassion she gave you are proof her legacy lives on.
Keep moving forward, live purposefully, and honor her by becoming your best self. May you find comfort in God, in the love and support of those around you.

I will always cherish the memories of the love and kindness Mrs Burchenson shared with me. During my tenure at the Dallas All Age School, when I ended grade four, that entire summer Aunt Val had me and a few others on her car porch every day doing lesson classes and at the beginning of that same school year she placed me in grade six (yes I skipped grade five) and then she moved me into her house where I shared the room and bed with Ozzette. At 5 a.m each morning she woke me up to do lessons in preparation for the upcoming Common Entrance Exam. How could I forget this teacher who gave me the motherly love she gave her own kids. How could I forget the dumplings she made for me. Among the many lessons she taught me that self control is very important and also that nothing feels better than walking into an exam and knowing what to do, always study for your tests/ exams, preparation is key...exact words from her...until this day, I never failed an exam. I must express that I am extremely happy that I got the chance to tell you Happy Mother's Day "2025" and I still have the voice note of your response saying " thank you Phillian"...God bless your spirit Aunt Val, continue to sleep in perfect peace. Your lifestyle was imitable and you will forever be in my 💔. Love Phillian.

Memory of Mrs. Burchenson
There is a memory of Mrs. Burchension that has stayed with me for over thirty years. She coined a simple but powerful song to encourage her students to read:
🎶
"A Reading school is what we want,
A Reading school is what we want.
If you can't read, dog eat yu suppa,
A Reading school is what we want."
🎶
This song was more than just words—it was a heartfelt initiative to inspire a love of reading. I have carried this idea with me throughout my teaching career, and I know Mrs. Burchenson’s influence has reached thousands, perhaps millions, of students over time.
To the Francis and Burchenson families, please accept my deepest condolences. You have lost a tireless champion, a steadfast support, and a truly precious soul. May her legacy live on in all the lives she touched.

Tribute to the Late Mrs. Valerie Burchenson
A Pillar of Strength, A Light Forever in Our Hearts
There are some lives so deeply woven into the fabric of a community that their absence leaves an echo impossible to silence.
Mrs. Valerie Burchenson was one such life, a woman of unshakable faith, discipline, compassion, and purpose. To Dallas Castle, she was not only a teacher or principal; she was a mother, an aunt, a sister, a neighbor, and a guide whose influence transcended generations.
Her home stood as an extension of her classroom, a sacred space where knowledge met nurture. Morning classes, evening sessions, and weekend lessons were not obligations but offerings of love. She opened her doors and her heart, believing that every child deserved a fair chance at excellence. Those lessons, sometimes punctuated by a firm word or the memorable “wop” from the famous belt "Stinky", were lessons that molded character as much as intellect.
From those humble classroom benches emerged doctors, nurses, teachers, principals, lecturers, managers, business owners, policemen, soldiers, and professionals of every kind, each carrying a piece of her legacy, each a living testament to her unwavering dedication.
Reading was her passion, and expression her gift to us. She demanded that every book read be reviewed in full expression. We learned early that “on paper” meant more than pen and ink, it meant thought, reflection, and understanding. Through that discipline, she shaped not only how we wrote, but how we reasoned, communicated, and carried ourselves into the world.
Mrs. Burchenson’s life was a lesson in itself, one of service, faith, perseverance, and love. She taught us that greatness is born not from privilege but from preparation, that discipline is a form of love, and that true impact is measured not by what we possess, but by the lives we touch.
As we mourn her passing, we do so with profound gratitude. Thank you, Mrs. Burchenson, for the countless mornings, the long evenings, the open doors, and the steady hand that guided so many. You have left an indelible mark not only on Dallas Castle, but on the hearts and futures of all who had the honor to sit before you.
Though you have journeyed beyond our sight, your spirit remains ever present, in every classroom, every lesson taught, every success achieved. We will carry forward your torch of learning, discipline, and love.
As Henry Adams so beautifully said, “A teacher affects eternity, she can never tell where her influence stops.”
Sleep well, our beloved teacher, mentor, and mother of many.
Your work here is complete, but your legacy will live forever.

Auntie words cannot express how much I love and miss you. You helped to mold me into who I am to day and I will be forever grateful. You had us on Saturdays for class and then every Sunday after church I would be there. Ozzette would comb my hair and if she wasn't there you would. You helped to guide my intellectual prowess and for this I will continue to make you proud.
I remember you telling me you are getting old and I need to apply to be a Justice of the Peace. You wrote the recommendations and gave me , however I did nothing with them. The third time when you asked if I had done it , you gave it to me to type and then you signed and stated , " Nuh do it nuh!"
I could write forever but your memories are a guiding light. Sleep on my lovely Aunt Val.
Excellence is the word!

Tribute in Honour of Mrs. Valerie E. Burchenson
My Godmother, Principal, and Mentor
The late Mrs. Valerie E. Burchenson was more than an educator to me; she was a true mother in every sense of the word. I will forever cherish the memories of receiving Christmas gifts, cake, and D&G glass bottle soda from her; simple yet thoughtful gestures that meant the world to me as a child and reflected her caring and generous nature.
Mrs. Burchenson served as my principal for most of my primary school years — a principal extraordinaire whose leadership, compassion, and strength commanded deep respect. Her life was firmly anchored in Christian values and principles, which guided every aspect of her service and shaped the way she treated others. She led with grace, fairness, and humility, always displaying kindness, patience, and love — qualities that truly mirrored her faith.
After I left high school, she continued to play an important role in my life by recruiting me as a teacher. The support, encouragement, and mentorship she provided during those years helped to mold me into the person I am today. She consistently encouraged me to continue studying and to never settle for the bare minimum. Through her words and her example, she taught me that excellence is both a duty and a form of gratitude to God.
Her passing has left a deep void in my heart, but I thank God for the privilege of having known her. Her faith, integrity, and love for others continue to inspire all who were touched by her life. She will be deeply missed, but I remain forever grateful that God loaned us such a beautiful, God-fearing soul.
May her soul rest in eternal peace and rise in glory.
To the Burchenson and Francis families, please accept my heartfelt condolences. May the Lord strengthen and comfort you during this time of sorrow. May you find peace in knowing that her legacy of love, service, and faith will live on in the many lives she touched.
Forever loved and missed!

My most precious memory with Aunt Val was when I lived with her. Since Uncle was away for work, she would let me sleep beside her. We would read together, sing together, and share such peaceful moments. Every morning, even though she didn’t need to wake up that early, she still did just so she could pray for me before school. I’ve always appreciated those prayers because they truly held me together during difficult times.
I also remember her singing, “A reading school is what we want, a reading school is what we want.” That simple song still stays with me. Whenever I feel defeated while reading through countless pages of my medical books, I remember her voice, my why, and the importance of learning.
Aunt Val, I miss you deeply, but I take comfort in knowing that you lived well and left a legacy of love, faith, and wisdom. 💖
