Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Steven “Tren” Nolan on August 5, 2026, at the age of 65. Tren lost his life suddenly to cancer.

Tren was born on May 31, 1961, in Denver, Colorado, to his loving parents, Ramona and Leonard Nolan. He soon built a life in Reno, Nevada, centered around family and friends.

Tren was known best for his upbeat and loving personality. Whether he was teaching in the classroom, on the tennis court, or playing card games, he’d always bring passion and joy, followed by an extreme competitive spirit. Tren dedicated his professional life to education, teaching advanced mathematics for over 40 years, most recently at Sage Ridge School, Manogue High School and Wooster High School. He impacted the life of many students, helping them achieve their dreams.

Above all else, Tren loved his family. They were his greatest source of pride, and his love for them was evident in everything he did. They cherished the time they spent together and created memories that will be carried in their hearts forever. Spending many moments laughing, playing cards, making up rules to games that only family would understand, barbecuing on the deck, hunting, camping, skiing, golfing, playing tennis and pickleball, and so much more, Tren had a way of making every moment feel celebrated and full of life.

Tren was a beloved son, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, teacher, and friend. He is survived by his parents, Ramona and Leonard Nolan; his siblings, Dane and Renae; his children Alia (Andy) Stark, Trenner Nolan, and Kye (Lizzy) Nolan; his granddaughter, Josie; his former wife and the mother of his children, Carmen Nolan; his former wife and great friend, Andrea Nolan; and many extended family members and friends who will continue to carry his memory forward.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Rinda.

Although Tren’s passing leaves a tremendous void, his family chooses to celebrate the life he lived and the memories he created so freely. His legacy will live on through every person who was fortunate enough to know and love him.

Service

A private family service will be held on Friday, August 14, 2026 at Walton’s Sierra Chapel. A larger memorial will be open to friends, family, colleagues, and students on Saturday, November 7, 2026. I am greatly saddened by this surprise news, and offer condolences and love to the family. I met Tren 7-8 years ago during USTA league tennis, and actually played against him several times before we both played on the same teams. Not only a great player and tremendously fun to play with, but also simply a kind-hearted, great man. I will miss some of our 1:1 hitting and drilling workouts on the courts. Thank you for the fun times, Tren.

I am so very sorry to hear of Mr. Nolan‘s passing. He was a great math teacher but an even better human. He was patient, kind, encouraging and funny. He had a way of explaining something complex that just made it easy to understand. He was so very kind when my dad died my senior year too. After graduating from Wooster (1993), I was having difficulty with a college math class, and without hesitation, he offered to help me. There are some people who make an impact on your life, and he was one for me. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

This makes me so sad. I was just thinking of him this morning. I thought about him many times over the years whenever I thought about myself as a math student. It has helped me as a teacher to know how to reach my students.

Mr. Nolan was my favorite teacher and the best math teacher I had. I had him during my junior and senior years in high school-Wooster Class of 95. I finally understood Algebra and Geometry because of him. This morning when I was thinking about him, I was planning on sharing that story with my students because I know a lot of kids struggle with math. But once you understand it, it's so much fun. And Mr. Nolan made math understandable and fun.

I remember during our senior fashion show, he was the one I mentioned. I don't remember the prompt but I mentioned him because he helped me in math.

I had Mr. Nolan as my AP Calc teacher - he is one of those teachers that you never forget, not just because of his exceptional gift at teaching, but because of how passionate he was about helping students learn and grow, and truly caring about making them better.

I had Mr. Nolan twice while attending Bishop Manogue from 2017-2021. He was by far the best math teacher I've ever had and was my primary inspiration to become a math teacher. He sparked in me a love and interest in both mathematics and education which have shaped my professional life, even years after graduating. I learned countless things from Mr. Nolan, not only about math, but as a teacher, a student, and a person. He was a terrific man, and his legacy will live on through all of us, continuing to inspire future generations. He will never be forgotten.

As my Ski team coach and teacher at Wooster Tren was fantastic. Helped keep me focused even when the day to day high school life seems to get to everyone. We celebrated a state slalom championship together and had many fun tuning parties prepping for state races every year.

I met Tren playing tennis. Not only a great player but a very fun, positive person to be around. Later he became the Calculus teacher to both my daughters. They both have math minors. I will miss his friendship, seeing him at the gym, and making him play pickleball with me. He was a great human being and will be missed.

I worked as a fellow IB teacher with Tren at Wooster for several years. We were fellow department leaders. I loved that he was as serious about his humor as he was about his math! We had great conversations about new grading philosophies and how to cook a BBQ outside the math/science department window at lunch. He was a great teacher and human being. I’m so sad that he left so early. My thoughts are with his family and his kids.

Mr. Nolan was one of the most caring math teachers I’ve ever had. Whether he was spending time empowering us to believe in ourselves when we were worried that we weren’t good at math or taking the time to make silly jokes that made the classroom more fun, he always put the utmost care into the his classroom and students. Not a soul who has been taught by Mr. Nolan did not experience his true care and empathy for the people around him. He was one of the smartest, kindest and funniest people I knew and he will truly be missed.

Mr. Nolan was my calculus teacher at Manogue. He was so supportive, brilliant, and encouraging. I took his Calc Bible with me to college, and it's now making the rounds with my friends. I worked with Tren for many years at Wooster High School. What an amazing and kind individual! He was always willing to share his expertise on anything. My first experience teaching Calculus was completed under his watchful eye. He also let my family barrow his pop-up tent trailer whenever we wanted to experience the great outdoors. Mr. Nolan was one of the best teachers I ever had, and he played a huge role in helping me develop my passion for mathematics. He genuinely cared about his students and was always willing to help, whether it was during class or during office hours when he would patiently work through problems with me. Some of my favorite memories are spending time in his classroom listening to the Red Hot Chili Peppers while talking through calculus, as well as talking about ski racing together. Even three years after graduating, I still have my copy of the "Nolan Calc Bible." Not only has it helped me throughout college, but many of my friends have borrowed it as well. Most of them never had the privilege of meeting Mr. Nolan, yet they have still benefited from his knowledge and dedication. In that way, he continues to touch the lives of people far beyond the walls of his classroom. Mr. Nolan's passion for teaching was evident in everything he did. He cared deeply about his students and wanted each of us to succeed. I have never forgotten his kindness, and I know he has played a role in my personal and academic success to this day. I send my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. His legacy will live on through the countless students he inspired, supported, and believed in, myself included. Mr. Nolan was my math teacher at Bishop Manogue from 2017-2021 and he was by far the best math teacher I ever had. I was, and still am, inspired by his knowledge, personality, and passion for teaching, and the way he taught calculus has stuck with me for years after. I can honestly say a lot of my foundation in math came from Mr. Nolan, and I owe it to him for my A’s in college bio-calculus! Mr. Nolan was my teacher when I attended BMCHS several years ago. It is because of his excellent skill as an educator that I remember the unit circle to this day! 😂 I greatly enjoyed his AP Calculus class, too. When I went to college, I studied engineering and was struggling to keep up in my college calc courses. I had reached back out to Mr. Nolan to ask him to share his treasured “Nolan Calc Bible” with me. He was incredibly supportive and excited share this resource and because of him, I excelled in my college calculus courses. I have never forgotten his kindness, and feel that he has played a role in my career success to this day. I want to express my gratitude to him and my deepest condolences to his family. ❤️
