Grief never ends… but it changes. It's a passage, not a place to stay. Grief is not a sign of weakness, nor a lack of faith… it is the price of love.
Obituary
Tony Hall, a cherished resident of Greenways in Delves Lane, Consett, passed away on June 5, 2024, at the age of 81. Born on September 4, 1943, Tony was a beloved husband, father and friend whose warmth and kindness left an indelible impact on all who knew him.
Tony was known as a carefree man who always took the path of least resistance. Whether he was cheering on Newcastle United, watching horse racing, snooker ,cricket or indeed any sport or spending a night out playing darts and enjoying a few frames of snooker with a good pint, his relaxed nature and love for sports were clear to all who knew him.
Tony grew up in Catchgate and was thick as thieves with his brother Joe. His other siblings, Pat, Mary, Kathy,Eileen & Michael kept Jessie ( mother ) on her toes and formed a fun and happy household.
15 years of age - Tony worked in the pit for a short period of time prior to working as a window cleaner for Jack Jefferson before joining the armed forces at 16-17years old. Tony served in the British Army—often bending the rules including fibbing about his age—to work as a wireless radio operator and gunner. It was during this time that he met his wife, Eileen Jefferson, even if his tendency to go AWOL to visit her sometimes got him into trouble. After leaving the army, Tony worked at Consett Steelworks as a train driver until the closure affected many, and he later spent years as a delivery driver until retirement.
Tony and Eileen were married on 26th September 1964. Together they raised four children: John, Tony, Wendy, and Eileen, sadly Eileen died at just 7 months old—a loss that affected the whole family deeply. For decades, Tony’s best mate Morris Michelson was his constant companion, sharing countless memories in regular haunts - Consett Steel club and The Trades until his passing in the late 1980s.
He enjoyed yearly bus trips to York racecourse with his brother in law and good friend Eric Sharpe, along with brother Pat amongst many other’s. Family holidays were spent every year at Wallis’s caravan park, Cayton Bay in Scarborough in the 70’s and 80’s. A superb time was had by all the family and of course the sun shone brightly every day!
Tony and Eileen later enjoyed holidays to the Balearic Islands, Spain, Cyprus, and Canary Islands— often taking one of the grandkids, Dom or James, along for the fun. Tony was famous for his early-morning trips to the bookies (before Eileen even got up) and his almost comical dedication to sunbathing—enough to give him a tan that would be the envy of any spanish dude!
Tony’s love for gardening was clear for everyone to see. He took great pride in filling his garden with beautiful blooms, rich in colour, creating a lovely and peaceful space, always making sure everything looked its best. Over the years, he transformed the gardens adding arbours and a summerhouse—places where family and friends could sit, relax, sunbathe and enjoy the beautiful garden he had created.
Tony’s legacy is one of enjoying life’s simple pleasures, embracing sports and leisure with a lighthearted spirit, and cherishing family moments above all. He will be remembered fondly by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
Rest in peace, Tony. Your laid-back style, your humor, and your love for life will remain with us always.
