Nan joins me in extending our sincere condolences to you and your family.

I have fond memories of our trips hiking between the high Sierra’s in Yosemite especially when you two would have the adult beverage available at the next camp when Karla and I finally hiked in. Those were wonderful, fun, energizing, experiences made even better by being with both of you.

Master canoe trip organizer Terry put together a truly once of a lifetime canoe trip from Minnesota’s Boundary Waters into the Canadian Quetico provincial Park, which one of my brothers and I were privileged to round out with Terry and his paddling partner.

For three of those August days, we never saw another human being, an unforgettable adventure I never would have done. Terry ‘s leadership, lists, coordination, organizing the camp kitchen, etc. made it truly wonderful trip.

I also am most appreciative of Terry’s help and am still benefiting by his wise advice as my co-trustee.

Our thoughts are with you and your family. Terry will be sorely missed by many.

We send our heartfelt condolences for the passing of our good friend, Terry Higgins. During my time as pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church, I experienced Terry as someone who brought an incredibly positive spirit to our church and offered unreserved support in every undertaking in our community. Terry and Junette are the kind of people who always put their faith into action in the ways they served others around them, especially those more needy than themselves. They made us feel welcome from the day we arrived at Immanuel. It was always joyful and fun to be around them.

Junette, you and your family will continue to be in our prayers as you grieve this great man who touched our lives.
Rest in God's love and peace, Terry.

Dear Mr. Higgins…Uncle Terry…Dad,
Thank you for teaching me how to camp…how to paddle a canoe…how to catch a fish.
Thank you for teaching me what “on the oblique” means and that a Baskin Robbin’s ice cream tub makes a great drum.
Thank you for supervising the building of our tree house and making us wear hard hats after a slight construction accident.
Thank you for building us an ice skating rink.
Thank you (not) for making me share a seatbelt with Corey all the way to Minnesota.
Thank you for being there when I ran across the street, afraid.
Thank you for teaching me how to portage and for “approving” my inclusion on the Boundary Waters adventure. And for showing me a gourmet meal only needs Velveeta cheese, some Melba toast and a little hooch.
Thank you for my best friend and second family.
Thank you mostly for being you and for being such an influence in and on my life. You made a difference.
When we were paddling, you taught me, “Red sky at night, sailors delight. Red sky in the morning, sailor take warning.” Whenever I see a red sky I always have and always will think of you. I know you’re watching over and instructing all of the other Angels on proper sunrise and sunset. I love you and miss you dearly.
Thank you.

Our deepest condolences to Higgins family. Our family joined Immanuel 2 years ago. Mr. Higgins’ warm and welcoming smile along side of Junette greeting us on Sundays always was so bright and told volumes about his goodness. However short period of time we knew Mr. Higgins, he certainly is a role model for me to continue believe that a warm smile goes long way to show kindness. Thank you God for Mr. Higgins, May he rest in peace in Your Holy presence. Please continue to hold Junette and the family in your warm embrace.

Immanuel Lutheran lost yet another pilar of the congregation. Throughout our years at Immanuel Terry demonstrated what it truly meant to be a man of faith, a father, a friend and a true class act on every level. His advice and support were always there for the church and its members. Our family will always remember him as "the man with the smile". The fingerprints of Terry and Junette will with Immanuel for decades to come.
All the best to Junette and the family.

When I met Terry and Junette almost 20 years ago, I had no idea what a lasting and dear friendship was starting. I know that Terry and Junette’s relationship couldn’t possibly have been a perfect one, but it sure seemed so to me. Honestly they seemed a bit like two teenagers full of mischief, such was their delight. They could always put a positive spin on anything. My time with them was spent in long conversations with lots of laughter and good times. They were godparents to my daughter. All this is to say that I always think of them together and I can’t imagine them otherwise. Terry was wonderful, kind hearted and always brought humor to the table. Junette, you are in my thoughts and prayers as you grieve your loss and navigate a new path forward. I know God will guide you as He always has. If He steers you in my direction, don’t resist… Much love always to your whole family, Laura Simmons

I felt a bond of the sea with Terry, having both been sailors.
Terry loaned me the book “Mathews Men” which is the Mathews family centered true account of Merchant Marine supply shipping on the U.S. East Coast during WWII. (my father while in the Navy during WWII was on such ships). To my chagrin and mortification, I left the book in our laundry basket and inadvertently washed it to smithereens. It took me three days to find the book, only discovering what happened after I washed the clothes and wondered where all the paper bits came from. I apologized profusely to Terry and bought a new book for him but he assured me not to worry and just to keep the new book. Terry was nearly the same age as my older brother which fact reinforced my feeling that we were brothers, including both as Christians and sailors. It was just last November that we shared Thanksgiving in the Fireside Room which June and Terry hosted. There we shared our personal and quaint stories about the plates we brought. Petere and I send our heart-felt condolences and our prayers are with Junette, Corey, Lisa, and the grandchildren.

Words cannot express what an incredible light Terry was with Junette at our church! He will be so missed! We started at Immanuel with the Higgins and Hungerfords in 1986. I will always be grateful to both Terry & Junette for helping me prepare for all of the weddings at Immanuel & cooking for Oktoberfest, along with so many ways they were always there to support our ministry! They used to go to San Francisco and feed the homeless & help them and were amazing to our seniors in making sure they were able to get to church. They started the Thanksgiving feast at church every year, so no one was left out for the holiday too! They sponsored the annual spring tea and were alway supportive at all of our events! We will really miss you and our thoughts and prayers go out to Junette, Lisa & Cory and their family. We know he is with Pastor Marcus working on some project he loved now! Well done faithful servant! Sending love and hugs to your beautiful family!

Corey and Mark picked each other up at university of Oregon.

Mark acquired a best friend and a west coast family: Terry and Junette opened their home and hearts to him. “You’ve got to meet Corey’s parents!” He said. And when I did, their rich conviviality that is only earned with time, patience and mutual respect, filled the room.

Terry’s presence and quiet wisdom was large and comforting. Always a man to look you in the eye, always a man to listen. Such beautiful qualities.

The photos say it all: family, nature, friends, loving the simple things, the most precious things in life.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Junette, Corey, Lisa, the grandchildren, and myriad friends. A special man.

Our love,
The Mariotti family.

We met Terry and Junette when the guys were naval officers aboard the USS Bausell, homeported in San Diego, in 1964 and 1965. During that time the ship cruised off the coast of Vietnam and visited the Philippines, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan. The guys and their wives were close, so much so that five couples, including Terry, Junette, and we had a reunion in Carmel, California in 2022. We are so happy we made that effort to get together. We remember Terry with affection, as we pray for all the Higgins'.

Marilyn and I offer our condolences and prayers for strength, comfort and peace. We understand how losing a loved one is "not something we get over.....but something we get through". I knew Terry primarily as a member of my team at work where he was a consummate professional. He turned his corporate "staff/overhead" department into a "profit center" that returned millions of dollars to our 12 operating divisions. More importantly, I......like anyone who knew him from any part of life......also knew him as a good, funny, fun loving and loyal friend who loved God, family and country! RIP, TERRY !!!

We have lost a truly great and loyal friend. We’ve known the family more years than we can count. So many memories of times shared , happy, sad , silly, (usually instigated by Terry), fun, joyful, long talks, praying together, singing , inside jokes, stories shared, wow list goes on and on! We will miss him forever and a day and will treasure our times together always.

When my dad passed, I felt compelled to write a message to Whirley Pop. 🍿

Subject:
It's a Sad Day for Popcorn...

Whirley Pop lost a master yesterday.

My father, Terry Higgins, passed away after a hard fight against a rare cancer that only afflicts a few. Throughout his battle, there were a few bright spots … When he felt strong enough to man the stove, grab his Whirley Pop, and with love, patience, and a deft hand, crank out another heavenly batch. Nothing gave him more happiness OR more fame. Family and friends marveled at his ability to conjure the absolute best bowl of popcorn. In better days, he and my mom would send care packages to my kids at college — a little taste of home and a little bit of Grandpa's love. Years ago, when he found the Whirley Pop, he never looked back. Never succumbed to fancy, flashy, or — god forbid — air poppers. No short cuts of any kind. He simply said, "It’s all in the prep, the crank, and the patience. Like everything in life, good things come to those who wait.” He bought Whirley Pops for all of us, but I can say with both sadness and pride, none of us mastered my dad's ability to make magic…Thank you for bringing him, and our family, so much joy over the years. Too often companies only get grief from their customers. We have nothing but admiration. Popcorn will never taste as good as it did when my Dad made it…but our hands are on the crank. Good things come to those who wait.

Best,
Corey Higgins

(Whirley Pop wrote me back the very next day)

Dear Corey,
Thank you for sharing your heartfelt message with us. We are deeply sorry for your loss and touched by your story about your father, Terry Higgins. It’s clear he was a remarkable man who not only mastered the art of making popcorn but also brought so much joy and love to those around him. We are honored that the Whirley Pop played a role in creating cherished memories for your family. Your father’s dedication to the simple yet profound act of making the perfect bowl of popcorn is a beautiful testament to his patience, love, and attention to detail. It’s stories like yours that remind us why we do what we do, and we are grateful to have been a small part of his life and legacy. Please accept our deepest condolences, and know that your father's legacy lives on every time someone in your family picks up a Whirley Pop and cranks out a batch of popcorn.

With warm regards and sincere sympathy,
Alex and the Whirley Pop Shop Team

If you'd like to honor one of my Dad's greatest joys, get a Whirley Pop and make a batch in his name. It won't be as good as his, but you'll love it just the same.
Corey
