Obituary

Stephen A. Clark, 76, of Greenfield, Massachusetts died Saturday April 27, 2024 at home. He was born in Brattleboro, VT on December 1, 1947, the son of Lloyd and Elizabeth (Rounds) Clark. Stephen was a graduate of Greenfield High School and continued his education, obtaining his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Stephen then attended Springfield College, receiving his Master’s Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling and also receiving a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Connecticut.

Steve was a social worker for nearly thirty five years who dedicated his entire career to being the voice of dignity, integrity, and self-worth for those who could not advocate for themselves. He was well respected by his colleagues, as well as his clients, and was known for his depth and breadth of knowledge in his profession. He was an outstanding teacher, mentor, and leader who led with respect, compassion, and care. Steve was also committed to workplace fairness and equity, as was demonstrated in his successful efforts to help unionize workers in mental health clinics in western Mass. He ran a successful psychotherapy practice in downtown Greenfield for twelve years and worked tirelessly for his clients until he took his last breath.

Outside of his professional work, he was also a passionate gardener and loved rooting for his beloved Red Sox. He was curious by nature and always enjoyed learning new things, often having a recommendation for an interesting book or movie that he had recently encountered or an interesting fact that he had learned. This innate curiosity and love of learning spanned his entire life. Steve was also known for his appreciation of good food, good music of all genres, and classic films, particularly film noir.

Besides his beloved wife of twenty eight years, April Estis-Clark, Stephen leaves a son, Jonas Clark and his wife Amanda Rinderle of Barrington, RI; a daughter, Jennifer Clark of Burlington, VT; three grandchildren, Calvin Clark-Stanton and Madeleine and William Rinderle Clark; and a step brother, Robert Rineer.

Stephen was predeceased by his parents, his brother, James Clark, his step-father, William Rineer, and his step brother, Richard Rineer.
