Obituary

Sonia Maria Murphy, daughter of the late Carolyn Baez and Arthur Murphy, was born on April 13, 1959, in Brooklyn, New York. She passed away on July 21, 2025, leaving behind a beautiful legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering strength.

Sonia is survived by her three beloved children: Celeste Johnson, Robert Baez, and Dana Baez. She was a proud and devoted mother whose love and guidance shaped the lives of those she raised.

She was also a cherished grandmother to Krystal, Ryan, Ashley, Tesfa, Jordan, Makayla, Tori, Alaina, Bella, Melanie, Eli, and Miguel—each of whom brought her boundless joy and pride.

The eldest of five siblings, Sonia was a guiding light to her sisters, Felisa and Nicole, and her brothers, David and Stephen. Her role in the family was one of leadership, loyalty, and unconditional love.

A brilliant mind, Sonia never studied a day in her life, yet excelled as a straight-A student, with Ivy League schools eager to welcome her. Her intelligence was effortless, and her presence unforgettable.

She was a talented swimmer, having learned at the beach in Cape Cod, where she spent summer after summer with her family. These cherished vacations became a treasured tradition and a source of lifelong joy. Among her many travels, her favorite trip was to the Caribbean. She had a deep love for cruises and always looked forward to seeing the world and embracing new adventures.

Sonia will be remembered for her wit, warmth, and the vibrant energy she brought to every room. Her love for her family was unmatched, and her memory will live on through all who knew and loved her.

My cousin Sonia was a cheerful person. The conversations we had on the phone were always about her love for Jehovah and her goals to serve him fully. She accomplished this and her challenges with her health did not hold her back. She was an encouragement to me. I know that Jehovah saw her challenges, her beauty and her loyal love and he will reward her with life again in his New World to come. I can only hope to see her there, to embrace her and watch her repeat her love and service to Jehovah in her usual cheerful way. The memory of her will not be lost, but will be renewed and kept safe with Jehovah until that time comes.

I met Sonia and her mother Carolyn at the Deerfield North Congregation around 2004. That was the time I moved back to Deerfield Sonia was always with her mother, I always thought that they were sisters..When you see one, you see the other.. Both encouraged me to be patient with my grandson. Sonia encouraged me to auxiliary pioneer. I can remember Sonia always smile even when she was going through some things, she never let that stop her from serving Jehovah she would be dearly missed as well as your mother Carolyn missed her so much. Can’t wait to see them both in the paradise.

Sonia was such a great person to hang out and visit with. She had a great sense of humor and could always get people to smile. Me and Steve have nice memories of being with Sonia on the Cape. Sonia’s faithfulness to Jehovah was always first in her life. She was a great example of remaining faithful to Jehovah no matter the circumstances. She will be greatly missed, but we look forward to seeing her in the new world.

Cindy and I first met Sonia when she moved to Deerfield Beach. She didn’t have a car so we picked her up for the meetings. That gave the whole family a chance to get to know her. We enjoyed her thoughtful comments at the meetings and sharing in the ministry with her.
We look forward to seeing her soon in the resurrection.

I’ll always remember the time Sonia and Mommy came to visit Liz and me in Hyannis. It was such a special trip—Hyannis held a lot of memories for them from their younger days, and we had the best time zipping around to all their old favorite spots. We shared days full of laughter, New England clam chowder, and of course, the kind of embarrassing stories only a big sister like Sonia could tell. Thank you for that joy, Sonia. Can’t wait to see you again, big sis. ❤️
