Sir Clive Johnstone

Clive and I were in the same year as boarders at Shrewsbury School. After Shrewsbury we both ended up at Durham University. I am greatly saddened to learn of his passing. I used to pick up snippets about his highly successful career in The Salopian magazine and was very pleased for him. He was a 'good man' which, in Salopian-speak in the late 1970s at least, is the highest praise one can confer on a fellow Salopian. RIP Clive.

I had the privilege of working with Clive on the RBL Board of Trustees. He was a wonderful, kind and caring man and he is gone way too soon. Sending condolences to his family at this sad time.

Settling down for a chat with Clive, whether in person or online, I always knew I would come out the otherside with a new perspective, or a new idea, or just feeling better about things. Clive brought energy and enthusiasm to every room he entered. There are lots of great people out there. There was, and will only ever be, one Clive.

I had the privilege to look after Admiral Clive Johnstone during my last post in Flag Officer Sea Training where I managed his Residence. His wise words and a wonderful leaving letter lead to a fruitful career working in Education and recently in the NHS. I was extremely sad to hear the loss of a good leader and my thoughts are with Ali and the girls during this difficult time. Here’s one of my memories to share when we entertained Ben Kingsley at FOST.

I was privileged to have Clive as my mentor. His wisdom, kindness, and support profoundly impacted my life. I am deeply grateful for the time we shared.

Clive has been my mentor since my undergrad at Durham university. Never have I met such a kind, caring and charismatic man. Clive had time for everyone and always had quick-witted advice and a cheeky grin. We’ll remember him always. Sending love to his family xx

What a privilege to meet this wonderful man. As I watched events in Normandy last week it felt so strange that Clive was absent - all wrong somehow. Missed by many admired by All who were fortunate to meet him throughout his all too short life. RIP

During the very recent D-Day Commemorations, we saw the selfless dedication of those who gave so much for the greater good. At Conference we saw a man who was selflessly dedicating himself to the greater good of the Royal British Legion and its beneficiaries.

After Sir Clive’s inspirational address on Saturday, it was so very sad to hear the news on Sunday.

On behalf of The Royal British Legion Suffolk, our sincerest condolences on the sad loss of a great man. He was our National President for little more than a year and during this time he had made his mark. His opening address at the National Conference was inspirational, this was made after a period of distress in the RBL since January this year. Clive, you promised us great leadership, but you left us too soon, Rest in Peace Great Man.

Clive was one of the greatest strategists of his era. He was a Distinguished naval officer and successful business person who gave his time and vast experience freely to support many charities. It was a privilege to have known such and intellect and gentleman.

My husband (Graham) and I attended the RBL Annual Conference in Newport recently and, like everyone else, were deeply shocked when we heard the very sad news about Sir Clive after we had returned home. We were inspired by his address to Conference on the Saturday, and his deep love for the RBL charity. He was comfortable chatting with delegates and sitting amongst the audience at Conference. Regrettably, due to the very large number of people attempting to say a personal Hello to him, we never got the chance. I particularly wanted to share my experience with him of working for over 50 years at both Rolls-Royce and BAE Systems. I'm sure he knew a lot about the nuclear submarine programme. We would like to express our thoughts and prayers to his wife and family at this very sad time.

As a 1985 BRNC entrant, I remember Clive fondly and respectfully. He was always destined for high rank, he did not disappoint.

Sir Clive was the Captain of HMS IRON DUKE when I joined as a newly qualified Gunnery Officer. He was incredibly patient with me as I learnt my trade as a Warfare Officer and was a great mentor through some tough times during sea training. He will be missed.

My elite Maureen and I had the pleasure of speaking to Sir Clive at our county conference earlier this year in lincolnshire, he was down to earth and very committed to the aims of the RBL

It was with great sadness we heard that Sir Clive had crossed the bar. In a short time, he had become a great favourite of the Branch and I know of the Legion as a whole. There are few in each generation of such remarkable people as was Sir Clive. I had the great privilege to join BRNC Dartmouth with him in September 1985 and I will sorely miss him.

Our thoughts and sympathy are with all at Headquarters and of course to Alison, Phoebe and Emily.
