Her memory lives on in the hearts of those who loved her.

A Life Remembered with Love

Savalla “Sally” Simpson was born on May 25, 1930, in Kiana, Alaska, the eldest daughter in a family of sixteen. Known to most as Sally, and to some family as May, Sis, or Sib, she lived a life defined by hard work, independence, and a deep love of family

Sally’s life took her many places. After leaving home at eighteen, she lived in Alaska, Washington, New York, Michigan, Florida, and Missouri. While she held affection for many of the places she called home, Washington and Michigan remained especially dear to her heart.

She was proud of her work and known for her strong work ethic. Over the years, Sally worked as a waitress, at a fish cannery in Anacortes, and alongside her husband Fred in commercial fishing and tendering in Alaska. Later, she found meaningful work in home health care in Mount Vernon, retiring in her early eighties.

Sally was active and curious by nature. She loved the outdoors, belonged to hiking clubs, enjoyed ferry rides and long walks in parks around Anacortes and Mount Vernon, and had a lifelong love of reading. She took painting classes, knitted and crocheted, and continued quilting throughout her life. She also loved singing at church and enjoyed visiting different congregations. And, as many knew with a smile, she also enjoyed a good slot machine.

She was tough, direct, and unfiltered — and gatherings with Sally were always fun. Above all, she was a devoted mother who followed her children wherever life took them, always showing up and staying connected. Her presence, energy, and love of life will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

Shared Thoughts & Remembrances

A space to reflect and share memories, thoughts, and words of love

February 25, 2026
I really miss talking to Aunt Sib. we used to talk a lot on the phone. She always asked me what my preacher talked about at church. She always understood the meaning of the sermon and added to it. So intelligent. I loved hearing her stories of New York, Michigan, Florida, and most of all Alaska. She visited us several times in Missouri and we had so much fun. I hated to see her go. I love and miss her very much.

I didn’t get the chance to meet Savalla, but reading the stories and seeing the photos here has been a beautiful way to learn about her life. It’s clear she raised a strong, caring daughter, and her presence continues through the family she loved. Her strength and love are evident, and her memory is clearly cherished.
