Sally Anne McKee

Obituary

Sally A. McKee, 61, a renowned computer science professor and beloved friend, passed
away Feb. 12 in Greenville, S.C., after a short illness.
She received her bachelor’s degree from Yale University, master’s degree from Princeton
University and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia, all in computer science.
She worked for Digital Equipment Corporation and Microsoft Corporation and held
internships at Digital Equipment Corporation’s Systems Research Center (now HP Labs) and
the former AT&T Bell Laboratories.
She then worked as an adjunct assistant professor at the Oregon Graduate Institute of
Science and Technology, a research assistant professor and adjunct assistant professor at the
University of Utah, an assistant professor at Cornell University, and as a professor at Chalmers
University of Technology in Sweden.
Until 2021 McKee was the C. Tycho Howle Chair in Collaborative Computing Environments
at Clemson University, and her research advanced cybersecurity in a world of growing threats.
She was hired in 2018 to oversee the Center of Economic Excellence in Collaborative
Computing.
McKee won several best paper and service awards from various professional societies. She
was most proud of an article she co-authored in 1994 as a Ph.D. student, about computer
memory at a time when many of the scholars in her field were concentrating on caches, “Hitting
the Memory Wall: Implications of the Obvious,” and the term was picked up widely.
McKee worked tirelessly in support of her graduate students and enjoyed mentoring rising
female computer scientists. Her mischievous sense of humor and profound generosity of spirit
will be remembered with gratitude. She is also remembered for her love of chocolate and
excellent culinary skills.
Raised in Fenton, MI, she was predeceased by her parents, Donna and Alton, her brother,
Sam, and her nieces, Melissa and Meagan. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Christine, and
niece, Lindsey and her wife Gina DiBartolo, and a wide circle of friends who consider her a
vivacious, bright light gone too soon.
Funeral arrangements are private. Donations in Sally’s memory can be made to the
Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org.

Sally and I met when we both got very drunk in a bar in North Carolina. She would late introduce me to my wife, and be my best person when I got married. The world was lucky to have her for even this short time. I will miss her.

I knew Sally years ago. She was my first roommate in graduate school at Princeton. We kept in touch for a while including summers at Bell Labs and when she moved to Portland she asked me if I knew anyone there. I connected her to an old high school friend of mine. Through that connection she and the high school friend ended up fixing up a college friend of mine with a friend of hers - the two have been married for several decades now. During this time I was living in Chicago and then North Carolina so I did not see Sally. And then I moved to Los Angeles while she was in Europe and then back on the east coast. So I lost touch with her and I am very saddened to hear about her passing. It would have been so easy to connect with her on zoom and I truly regret that this did not happen. I will miss her smile and love of life.

I met Sally during her time at Chalmers. Her big heart still stands out — always ready to offer a place to stay to someone in need, or care and kindness to an animal in trouble.

I knew Sally in the ERA Project many years ago... and it was indeed funny cooperating with her! I remember the good drinks we had together, as well as the direct talks without filter that sometimes gave colors to the group dinners!!! Sally, rest in peace...

It's really so sad to hear this news. I've been working for a 3+ years with Sally on the Embedded Reconfigurable Architecture (ERA) project. She coined that successful name! She gave a PhD course at my University (Siena, Italy) and we enjoyed lots of amazing technical talks and a paper together. Rest in peace, dear Sally.

I was so sad to hear this news. Sally was incredibly generous, intelligent, beautiful, and always so bubbly and friendly. She was instrumental in helping me in a class in high school, and we used to laugh so hard together. As smart as she was, she somehow got me, and helped me. You will be missed, Sally. Please know that you were loved then and now. The last time I saw her was outside The FirePlace bar about three years ago, and we both laughed like schoolgirl again.RIP and soft journey.
