AReflection of Life Well Lived - Her Journey, Her Story

Ruby Gibson Clerk was born on June 10, 1939 in West Point, Mississippi to the late Laura Shelton Young and Dave Gibson, Sr. She completed her pilgrimage on earth and entered into Glory on March 30, 2024.

Ruby was born the eldest of twelve children and attended elementary school at Pilgrim Grove Church and Ministerial Institute. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at 12 years of age at Pilgrim Grove Baptist Church. As a child, she felt a strong conviction to be an example as she served God through song and service. After graduating from Northside High School in 1959, she attended college at Mary Holmes Junior College in West Point majoring in Business Education. Departing Mississippi in 1960, she moved to Miami, Florida where she met and married the late Ervin Clerk, Jr. on March 14, 1960. Their 37 years of marriage produced eight children. Her chosen vocation was a homemaker rearing her children in the admonition of the Lord. She worked in several career areas that included cosmetology to working with the mentally disabled and elderly.

At the core of her existence and work during her pilgrimage was living out her God-given purpose of showing God’s love, planting generation spiritual seeds through serving others and living out God’s love. As she matured in Christ and learned how to live a Spirit-led and filled life, she thrived under the tutelage of the late Mother Elizabeth Strader and the leadership of the late Bishop Jacob Cohen at Cohens Temple C.O.G.I.C. She served the Lord through her example of love. She worked with the youth, jail ministry, witnessed in the “hedges and highway” compelling the lost to come into a relationship with Jesus, took care of the sick and shut-in, and served Home & Foreign Mission, just to name a few. Upon returning to Mississippi in 1979, She joined St. Matthew Temple Church of God in Christ and served in numerous capacities until 2002 when she joined Yellow Blossom Baptist Church in Cedar Bluff, Mississippi closer to her home. In 2006, Ruby moved to Texas and God continued to use her in service at Crossroads Bible Church and New Life Fellowship Church supporting Helping Hand Food Distribution ministry, AWANA Bible Study & Scripture Memorization for children, the Prayer Ministry, Bible Study, and Vacation Bible School. She participated in community activities to support the homeless and was a member of the Grand Prairie chapter of the Red Hat Ladies.

Her late husband (Ervin Clerk), eldest son Glen Clerk, daughters Cheryl and Shelia Clerk, and grandson Damian Collins preceded her in eternal life. She leaves to cherish her memory, two daughters: Sandra Clerk (Grand Prairie, TX), Kimberly Clerk (Memphis, TN), three sons: Ervin Clerk (Brenda) of Memphis, TN, David Clerk (Maki) of Burleson, TX, Jonathan Clerk (Grand Prairie, TX); eight sisters: Arie Myles (Miami Gardens, FL), Climmie Robinson (Goulds, FL), Dorothy Gibson (Chicago, IL), Brenda McLaughlin (Charles) of Spring Lake, NC, LaWanda Young (Birmingham, AL), Pamela Crusoe (Madison, MS), Rita Gibson and Curtistine Terry (Saginaw, MI); three sister-in-laws: Barbara Mitchell (Atlanta, GA), Della and Shelley Clerk (St. Louis, MO); two brother-in-laws, Eleazar Johnson (Columbus, MS), RB Vaughn (Jackson, MS); twelve grandchildren, Ervin Collins, Tamara Collins, Semaj Collins, Gabriel Hibler, Jabe Ray, LaShaunta Newby (Leshawn), Alisha Edwards (Ervin), Gary Glover, Kylan Clerk, Alyssa Clerk, David Clerk II, and Daniel Clerk, fourteen great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, great nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
