Obituary

Rochelle D. Bryant -Speller departed from this world on August 18, 2024, at the age of 66. Born on July 5, 1958, to William (2012) and Joan (1970) Bryant who preceded her in death. Rochelle was a beloved mother, sister, cherished friend, and beacon of strength to those who were fortunate enough to know her.

Rochelle spent her life in Chicago, IL, where she helped train German Shepards with her father and cultivated art and cooking with her mother from an early age. Her love for Shepards was present in every season of her life as she continuously cared for and trained Shepards; they became her canine kids. Rochelle was the second born of four children, Dannette Bell (2009), William E. Bryant III (1998), and Kelly Bryant-Sutherlin.

Rochelle went to private schools during her primary and secondary educational tenure. She started her post-secondary study of Mortuary Science at Southern Illinois University and later finished her collegiate career with her double Bachelors Degree from Chicago State University. Her professional career was multifaceted but focused on the sciences as a high school instructor, funeral director, and mortician. Her nurturing spirit and steadfast commitment to her family were the cornerstones of her life. She imparted wisdom, kindness, and perseverance to her children, ensuring that they were well-equipped to navigate life's journey with resilience and grace.

Rochelle gave birth to two children Dominique V. Portis and Vincent A. Speller; has a bonus son Micheal Speller, and one God-Daughter Myla Robinson-Jefferson. She hosted many children, from nieces, nephews, or even her children's friends, who she adopted as her own due to her love and passion for seeing children grow and flourish. Her tough love and realness were always welcomed and a force that helped to guide so many to become successful adults. Her talents and love do not stop there. Rochelle, was a modern-day Jane of all Trades, if it was broke, she could, would, and did fix it.

Beyond her role as a mother, Rochelle was known for her warm heart and generous spirit. She was an active member of the Sarcoidosis Foundation, her building community, and always willing to lend a helping hand or offer words of encouragement. Her diagnosis with Sarcoidosis in 2007 ignited a desire to learn, overcome, encourage, and support others suffering from this disease. She participated in forums, speaking engagements, and clinical trials to advance the research and help find a cure. Rochelle's home continued to be a place of refuge, food, drinks, and comfort, where friends and family could gather and feel at ease.

Rochelle's childhood passion for the arts continued and she launched her entrepreneurial business of custom Welcome Heads for the doors and walls of many homes. She often used her artwork as a way to express her creativity and capture the glamourous look that she desires all women to display. Her artistic talent was admired by many, and mirrored her personal flare for fashion, it will continue to serve as a lasting testament to her creativity and inner light.

Her departure leaves a void that can never be filled, yet her memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved her. She is survived by her four children, who will carry her legacy forward with the same love and integrity that she instilled in them. Her service dog Kane, eight grandchildren: Robert A. Wallace, Kylan X. Jones, Kameron A. Jones, Mariah A. Speller, Ruby M. Speller, Zeke O.M. Speller, Emya Z. Jefferson, Isabella R. Speller, her sister Kelly Bryant-Sutherlin, a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and family.

In this time of sorrow, we find solace in the countless beautiful memories she leaves behind and the enduring love that will forever connect us to her. Rochelle D. Bryant-Speller will be deeply missed but never forgotten. May her soul rest in eternal peace.

RoRo thanks for being everything that you were to me. Our lives collided at the most pivotal time for me. I had just lost my mom and now retrospectively realize I was in need of support, direction, and a mentor which you noticed and willingly embraced. Through the years our relationship blossomed, and you became the supplement that I needed, telling me “I’m Your God Mother” if anyone asked lol. You taught me so much and assisted me through some of the most challenging and happiest moments of my life. We shared many similar experiences, commonalties, and interest that made our bond strong. I can honestly call you my bonus mom, friend, confidant, nana to my kids, amazing mother-in- law to my husband, but most importantly everything that God provisioned you to be in our lives. We always made sure to have each other's back, it was the unspoken code you displayed for so many. I end with this, one thing for certain is to absent from the body is to be present with the Lord- 2 Corinthians 5:8 and two things for sure we’ll meet again and we luv ya RoRo ‘G’— Myla, Eric, Robert, Emya

Thank you for all of your lessons. You taught me to not cut corners, the value of a good meal, the little details matter, and I will miss you. I love you. -Michael

Thank you for being the best big sister ever Ro Ro. I love you always and you will forever be in my heart. Your little sister-Kelly

Aunt Ro!
You were the first aunt I met when Marcus first brought me to Chicago. He respected and loved you so much he knew you would be the best one to vet me coming into the family. We didn’t connect often but whenever we did it was ALWAYS so much LOVE. I love you so much and will miss connecting with you. Thank you for all you instilled into my husband as a child and young man. We love you Aunt Ro…until we meet again! Rest well.
