Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4: 6-7

Obituary

Robert “Bob” W. Howard passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, August 15, 2025, in Southern California at the age of 91, following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

A man of deep faith, Bob was a devoted follower of Jesus and a living example of compassion, integrity, and humility. He was an avid fly fisherman, bird watcher, world traveler, and friend to everyone he met. He had a rare gift for listening and made every person feel valued and loved. To his family, he was the best husband, dad, and grandpa anyone could ask for.

Born in Santa Monica in 1933, Bob attended Santa Monica High School, where he was one of only three students at the time ever elected student body president twice. He went on to graduate from Claremont Men’s College in 1955, serving as freshman class president and earning several honors, including the Student Citizenship Award before proudly serving his country in the United States Army. It was during his time in the Army that he met the love of his life, Cleva Jo Hill, with whom he shared 65 wonderful years of marriage. They celebrated their anniversary just one week before his passing.

Bob began his career at Coldwell Banker, where he formed lifelong friendships. He later joined a startup and eventually founded his own firm, building a successful career in commercial real estate.

Bob was also a tireless servant-leader. He served on the Board of Governors of the Rose Institute, and worked relentlessly to help found and build the Discovery Science Center in Orange County, which would not be what it is today without his vision and dedication. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the Balboa Bay Club and Resort and was involved in organizations like KidWorks, which supports under-resourced youth through mentoring, tutoring, and enrichment programs. He also served as a board member and former Chairman of HomeWord, a Christian organization focused on strengthening families and communities. In addition, Bob was deeply committed to his faith, participating in several men’s Bible studies and mentoring programs where he guided and inspired others with his wisdom. He also took part in the annual Portola Ride, a historic horseback journey celebrating California’s cultural heritage, which became a meaningful tradition for him. His efforts touched countless lives and communities.

Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Cleva; their three children, Karen (Greg), Douglas (Cheryl), and Sharon (Mark); and six grandchildren: Joshua, Rachel (Matt), Lauren (Ryan), Keeton, Jessica, and Nathan. He and Cleva were also blessed to welcome Carol (Chuck) into their lives as a daughter in later years, forming a relationship of enduring love and devotion.

While his presence will be deeply missed, his family rejoices in the promise that he is now and forever in the presence of the Lord.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be held on September 12th at 11 AM at Mariners Church. The family asks that attendees wear casual, joyful colors or fishing-inspired attire to reflect Bob’s joyful spirit. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Bob’s life.

I met Bob for the first time when he was walking down our street with neighbor Ruth, who used a walker. He did this every day. They stopped to talk and we got acquainted. He invited me to a men’s Bible study on Friday mornings, and he would pick me up at 6:30 AM sharp. Conversation flowed and we enjoyed each other‘s company. It was his influence on me that increased my ability at reading scripture and sharing the Lord with others. He touched a lot of people’s lives with his gentle, loving ways, and is terribly missed by us all.

Bob had a joyful heart that was always reflected through his cheerful attitude. I met Bob and Cleva when their daughter Karen invited some of us from Inside-Out (singles group at Mariners church) to their home in Newport Beach. I remember Bob taking time to talk to each and everyone of us individually. He was always very hospitable and a genuine listener. I always felt welcomed in their home. Bob went out of his way to help others. I remember when Bob took time from his busy scheduled to pick me up from LAX airport (because my friend who was supposed pick me up had something come up at last minute) so I can visit my friends during my 10-hour layover during my flight from Canada to India. Bob’s life truly exemplified Jesus’ teaching : ‘love others as yourself’. Thank you, Bob for always welcoming me and my family. Until we meet again…..

I remember one time we were at Bob and Cleva"s home in Newport and I believe it was one of many Sunday brunches we had in their home. I remember Bob going out into the entry wsy area, looking up at some support columns, and he asked himself if there was a way to move them so there could be more room for singles events in their home. That struck me as a very unselfish and uconditional act of love for all of us. Loving. Kind, and Giving',-the best 3 words to describe Bob.

Bob was a true gentleman‘s Christian, who was a mentor of strength, character, and personal-devotion to all those he loved and cared about. Bob and his wife were instrumental in the development of the 20’s Something group at Mariners Church. We were in awe that they opened their beautiful home on the water in Balboa Island to upwards of a 100 post-college Christians that became the bedrock of the Mariners young adult community. Bob treated each one of us like a personal friend, family member, and Sojourner in Christ. He was a natural leader, an empathetic mentor, and a model of Christ’s love. Everyone who was fortunate to know him felt truly blessed, and the memories of him help shape our lives today. Well done, good and faithful servant, you have entered God‘s rest, and we will be blessed to join you.
