What we have once enjoyed deeply we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us." - Helen Keller

Obituary

Rita Morris Spence passed away peacefully on June 19, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was 85 years old. Rita was a woman of elegance, wit, and deep convictions. She embraced the finer things in life—art, travel, good conversation, and the occasional glass of champagne. Her sharp eye and creative spirit were expressed through her love of photography, her appreciation for beauty in all forms, and her interest in genealogy, which she pursued with the curiosity and care of a true historian. In retirement, she found purpose and pride in serving as a dedicated election volunteer, helping her community vote with confidence and care. She believed deeply in the importance of staying informed and engaged, and she encouraged those around her to do the same.

Rita was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, William Tippah “Ken” Spence II; her children, Kym Shaw and husband Steve, Tiffany Spence, and Tippah Spence and wife Karen. She was a cherished grandmother to eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Ken-Alan Spence, whose memory she carried with her always.

A celebration of Rita’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, you may honor her legacy simply by casting a thoughtful vote, championing what is right, and living with the same blend of boldness, heart, and style that Rita brought into the world every day.

As young adults raising our children, we were best friends. When we moved apart, I still felt that closeness!

I always admired you and how pretty you were. I remember when you asked me if I had the negatives of your wedding because my dad, your Uncle Hall took the pictures. I enjoyed seeing you at our family reunions. Rest in peace my beautiful cousin, Rita!

My dear beautiful cousin, Rita, you will be missed. It had been a lot of time since I last saw you, but you were always in my heart. Your son, sister, brother and parents are holding out their arms in welcome. Love you

I miss you RitaPete. You were my nemesis in childhood, stalwart in adulthood.
Love you, your whiny, disgustingly dressed, younger sister.

I will forever miss my genealogy/travel partner. And the photo with the flowers reminds me of how talented she was arranging flowers. The ones for the tables for my 60th birthday were so special.
