Obituary

Richard Clifford Smith, Jr., a deeply loved friend, proud New Yorker, and lifelong adventurer, passed away on May 5th, 2025, at the age of 64.

Rick entered the world in Chelsea, MA, and spent his youth relocating often, following his father’s path in the Navy. Rick dedicated his life to service, courage, and connection. He served his community with honor as a New York State Police officer, where he retired as Lieutenant Colonel after 34 years of dedicated service. His leadership, integrity, and unwavering commitment to duty left a lasting impact on the force and the many lives he touched.

Rick shared an unbreakable bond with his daughter, Julia Smith—they were best friends who talked constantly and supported each other through every joy and challenge. His devotion as a father knew no limits; whether it meant traveling halfway around the world to trek to Everest Base Camp or being up before sunrise to stand at the bottom of a ski course cheering her on, Rick always showed up—for her and for everyone he loved.

Rick’s warmth wasn’t reserved just for family. He had a rare gift for forming deep, genuine connections with everyone he met. Whether it was someone he’d known forever or a stranger he spoke to once, Rick never forgot a face or a conversation. He would reach out—sometimes years later—just to check in, say hello, and remind you that you mattered.

A true lover of life, Rick found joy in both nature and the simple pleasures of every day. He loved traveling the world, skiing, fishing, hiking, golfing, and hunting. He had a deep appreciation for art and photography and was always ready to dance to his favorite music—preferably with a Coors Light in hand and followed by his favorite dessert, a chocolate chip cookie. He was known for his dad jokes, quick wit, and unmistakable laugh.

Rick is survived by his loving wife, Erin Smith; his beloved daughters Julia Smith and Kayla Chetney; his mother, Ruth Smith; and his two brothers, Randall Smith and Russell Smith. He was predeceased by his cherished daughter, Rachel Smith, and his father, Richard Clifford Smith, Sr. He leaves behind many extended family members and dear friends whose lives were brightened by his generosity, humor, and spirit.

A memorial service will be held on May 18th, 2025, at Singleton Sullivan Potter Funeral Home (407 Bay Rd, Queensbury, NY 12804) from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. A reception will follow at the Holiday Inn, 2223 Canada Street, Route, US-9, Lake George, NY 12845, a place Rick cherished and frequented often.

Richard believed in kindness, service, and making the world better for the next generation. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his memory to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, where his daughter proudly works to carry on that same spirit of compassion and care: http://support.mhsfoundation.org/goto/richardsmith

Erin, Tracy and I want to give you our sincere condolences. In the short years I got to know Rick I consider him to be a good friend. Whenever I was going to play golf with Allen, I always knew Rick was going to be there. I always look forward to that. He definitely had a zest for life. I will miss him on the golf course. He had a way of touching people‘s lives. I’m so grateful I got to and know him. I’m sure he had the time of his life in everything he did.

Julia( aka Swami) and her dad were “ 2 peas in a pod”. He was your hero, guide and constant. He had you on the slopes at age 3 and was your biggest fan at every race. He cheered when you soared and lifted you when you fell. He taught you how to glide thru life with courage and grace. His voice may be silent now but his love lives on in every memory. Rest in love- always in our hearts- Rick and Rachel are together now. MY IMMORTAL.

Julia and Erin, I am so sorry for your loss. Rick was fully devoted to his family and friends, and always looking to support those he loved. He was there for me my entire life and always cared about everything I pursued, from ski racing to marathon training. At my first marathon, I saw Rick on the sidelines cheering every other mile, the entire way. I had no idea how he was driving, parking, and getting on the course so fast, but I could not lose him! He was at the finish and so proud you would have thought I was his son. He will always be there with me, cheering me on. He was loved deeply and will be, forever.
