Retha Jernell Nichols Bass

Fifty years later, we gather in gratitude to proclaim the enduring love she planted within us, the faith that sustained us, and the family and friends who lifted us.
A Tribute of Love: Trials, Triumphs, Testimony
As the third youngest of thirteen children, Retha grew up grounded in the powerful bonds of family. She carried within her a strong will, a vibrant spirit, and a smile that could light up even the heaviest of rooms. Those who knew her saw not only her laughter and energy, but a quiet, enduring strength—one that made her a loving and attentive mother, a steadfast daughter, a trusted sister, and a woman who chose to live her faith through action.
As a mother, Retha’s love was warm, spirited, and affectionately tender. Her bond with her eldest daughter, Deidra—born in San Francisco during Retha’s early years as a Navy wife—was deepened by the long stretches when it was often just the two of them. Together, they weathered the sorrow of losing Retha’s second daughter, Yolondia (Londi), a grief that intensified Retha’s already boundless love for her surviving child. In time, her youngest daughter, Jana, arrived in Texas, bringing a fiery spirit and a natural caretaker’s heart—traits that mirrored Retha’s own instinct to nurture and protect. She taught her daughters to rely on one another, to advocate for others, and to remain rooted in respect for self, family, and community.
Beyond the walls of her home, Retha lived a life of purpose through service. At the Harris County Community Action Center, she poured her energy into coaching young people, not merely to win championships, but to win in life. She listened intently to teenagers who needed more than advice; they needed hope, and she gave it without reservation. Early impressions left on her daughters were of her leading with strength and warmth, creating environments where her teams thrived and felt empowered to give their best in all situations. Her faith was never boastful; it was stitched into her every action—through the simple joy of new clothes placed quietly in closets before the first day of school, through the sacrifices made for her parents, siblings, and extended family. She led with love, and she lived and served with her whole heart.
Today, we honor not just what Retha gave during her lifetime, but what continues to live because of her. Through her daughters, her grandchildren, her family, and every life she touched with kindness and courage, her testimony endures. We gather in gratitude not for what we lost, but for the way her love grew within us—shaping who we are and who we strive to be. May her life always remind us that true greatness is found in how we lift others, how we choose grace over bitterness, forgiveness over resentment, and how we leave behind a light no sorrow can dim.
