A man whose family was everything

Obituary

Our father died September 11, 2025, after a multi-year battle with bladder cancer. He was a beloved Patriarch and the center of our family.


Born January 12, 1932, in Bluefield, WV to Eugene and Dorothea Yager the last of four children. The family settled in Arlington, VA where dad went on to attend Washington and Lee High School where he graduated in 1950. During his high school years dad was not allowed to play athletics for fear of injury however, when rowing became an option, his parents begrudgingly relented and allowed him to participate. What was amazing is that eight young men who had never rowed before came together and went on to win the School Boy National Championship in both 1949 and 1950. A feat that had never been done before.

Dad went on to attend the University of Pennsylvania on a rowing scholarship and while there was asked to play football. Unfortunately, he suffered a knee injury and returned home to attend American University. He was drafted into the US Army where they stationed him at Fort Myer so he could train for the 1956 Olympic Rowing Team. After narrowly missing out on the Olympic Team, he went on to obtain another National Championship this time in a single scull representing the Potomac Boat Club. Paul went on to coach rowing for local high schools and colleges.


While stationed at Fort Myer he was assigned to the Army Communications Center at the Pentagon where made a career as a civil servant for another 33 years. Paul married Barbara Jean Lawrence in 1958 to whom he stayed married for 25 years. Paul and Barbara had 3 children, Michael, Laurie and Stephen. While at the Pentagon, he helped to usher in the computer era participating in impactful technology advancements. After retirement, dad followed his son Stephen and his family to Raleigh, NC where he made his home for the past 30 years.


Our father was a stranger to no one and was always willing to help anyone in need. He got his love of woodworking from his father where he applied those skills to helping all kinds of people from building furniture, decorations, sheds and helping young people with projects. He was an avid Washington Redskins fan where he enjoyed season tickets for over 30 years. Paul also loved golf and got incredible joy playing with his family.


No one loved their grandchildren more than our father. He attended every sporting and school event possible traveling between his children and was a constant fixture in all their lives.


Paul is survived by his children Michael (Jody), Laurie, Stephen (Annemarie); grandchildren Bradley, Samuel, Brent (Kristen), Katelyn, Trystan, Rebecca (Kyle), Grady (Briana), Nathan, Alexander (Kaitlyn) and Matthew (Taylor); and his six great grandchildren.


We will celebrate dad's life in Raleigh, NC on Friday September 19, 2025 at 11 am.

Mr. Yager was a second father to me and I will miss him so much. The great times had at the Yager home are some of my fondest memories. To say they were epic is an understatement! Love and fun abounded! Don't leave your sandwich unattended because you would surely find his finger poked into it. :-) His brisket was legendary and will live on as will his memory. My deepest and heartfelt condolences to the family. I loved your Dad.

Paul and I go way back to when I was attending Wakefield High School in Arlington, VA and joined the Potomac Boat Club's first women's crew coached by Charlie Butt and Paul. Soon after I introduced Paul to a best friend Barbara Lawrence, and the rest is history! .
Paul and I became close friends some years later and shared traveling, running (short and long), hiking (Grand Canyon one year), biking (Napa wine country) and just spending qualify and fun time together, and with friends.
Paul was a gentle soul who was a friend to many and could make you feel special, loved and joyful. I loved Paul and miss him every day.

What a great guy!
Paul helped me and a few other friends at Wakefield HS get access to the Potomac Boat Club and its boats and then volunteered to coach us frequently.
No one was happier than Paul when we won our first race.!
He will always be remembered for his generosity, positive attitude and sense of humor.

Paul was a gentle, gracious soul who had a way of making everyday moments feel special, he was kind-hearted, helpful, and full of warmth. When I moved to the United States, I could never have imagined finding more wonderful friends than the Yagers. Anne and Steve became my family when I had none, and Paul was an inseparable part of that love. They were all a true blessing in my life, and I will always carry that gratitude in my heart. I’ll cherish all the beautiful wood items he gifted me over the years, as well as our chats, his helping hands, and the laughter we shared looking after the kids. I will miss him dearly. My love and prayers are with his family during this time of sorrow, holding them close in gratitude for his beautiful life. Thank you, Paul, for your kindness and the steady grace you gave to all of us. With love and deepest sympathy. 🙏❤️

Paul was such a sweetheart! I met him through my husband, Tom Chisnell, who knew Paul well from rowing at W-L. I always enjoyed catching up with him at rowing reunions at PBC, and he was always cheerful and funny, a great storyteller, and a fantastic woodworker. We are sad, and he is missed.

Paul Yager was my friend, my mentor, my brother, and assistant coach to our '57 National Champion W-L eight. He was demanding, focused, and driven to be the best, and instilled that in all us. We never lost a race, and, in part, that had much to do with Paul Yager's guidance. Memories of Paul will be with me the rest of my life. Needless to say, he was a big influence in my life. I first met Paul in the fall of 1956 when we were working on boats at PBC. I had just started my sophomore year at W-L (3-year HS in those days). He was the assistant coach under Charlie, and what a great team they were. So many national championships under their tutelage. I was glad I got to visit with Paul at his son's home a few years ago, it was great to catch up. Wishing you calm waters Paul and see you at that great dock in the sky!

Paul's name has been immortalized by his seating in the first of many storied W-L crew's. Generations of rowers looked in awe upon him and the others who build the program's tradition of success.

My deepest sympathies for your loss. Paul was a man amongst men, bigger than life, and a good soul. He was a compatriot of my father at W-L, although they were two classes apart (my dad was in the class of 1948). They were both in the Cadet Corps together. Paul's caring, his hearty laugh, and his dedication to helping others, especially the kids at W-L, will not be forgotten.
