Patrick Voon Ewe Leng

To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.
Obituary
Patrick Voon Ewe Leng passed away peacefully on 23 May 2026, aged 74. Born in Kuching, Malaysia, Patrick migrated to Australia in his early twenties, where he built a career as an accountant and made his home for over five decades. He is lovingly survived by his wife Patricia and his daughter Alison.
Patrick was known for the warmth, integrity, and fierce conviction he brought to everything he did. He was devoted to his family and to his community, offering steadfast support to those around him and never shying from standing up for what he believed was right.
A passionate advocate for the Chinese-Australian community, Patrick served as President of the Chinese Australian Forum (CAF) from 2011 to 2013. During his tenure he led landmark complaints under the Racial Discrimination Act, campaigned to preserve the La Perouse Chinese Market Gardens, and gave evidence before the NSW Legislative Council's inquiry into racial vilification law, work that contributed to significant reforms in how hate crimes are handled in New South Wales. He would go on to be remembered in the NSW Parliament in his honour.
Outside his advocacy work, Patrick ran his own tax practice and was known for his sharp mind and loyal client relationships. He was a devoted member of the South Sydney Rabbitohs, a keen mahjong player, and a man who was never short of an opinion or a laugh. He will be deeply missed by his family and his many friends across Australia, Malaysia, and Singapore. His ashes will be returned to Kuching, the city of his birth.
Patrick's memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.

I managed to meet Patrick during the 2022 st Thomas reunion. He's a superb guy.
We are far in the age gap bracket but he is a very joyful cheerful person and I enjoyed his conversations.
I lost my father in law years back and he too was part of the st Thomas class and also a graduate from Sydney.
And I remembered Patrick told me to visit him in Sydney but with life going on it wasn't so easy especially recovering from the pandemic.
Nevertheless, I am happy to see and meet him. Good to know there are people like him on this earth. And has moved on
Rest in peace good sir. May god take you in good faith.

I had the great honour of meeting Patrick in Perth through the Chinese Australian Forum (CAF). I quickly discovered that Patrick was also a fellow Sarawakian, and I was so happy to bring him to enjoy what I believe is the best Sarawak laksa in Perth. We shared many wonderful stories and memories about Kuching together.
Patrick was warm, kind and proud of his roots, and I will always treasure those moments and conversations with him. He will be greatly missed.
Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time.
Fond memories of Patrick will stay with us forever.
After he had gone overseas we have met only at a handful of class reunions in Kuching over the latter years in the 2000s.
But we managed to stay in touch via our group chats where we communicated often. He couldn't make our 8th March reunion this year but was hopeful he'll make the next one.
I will always remember Ewe Leng with great fondness, he was a caring person and his life made a difference to many.
You will be missed dear friend.
