Obituary

Cleo Patricia ‘Pat’ S. Godsey, age 80, a resident of Culleoka, Tennessee, passed away on Tuesday evening, January 14, 2025.

She was born in San Antonio, Texas to the late Cleo and Charles Still. As a toddler, her family moved to Anniston, Alabama, where Pat was raised and met her husband of 63 years, Mike Godsey. Pat and Mike moved to the Nashville area in the 1970’s to pursue their careers, and raise their children in Brentwood,TN. Later in life, they followed through on a romantic idea of renovating an old farm house in Culleoka,TN and decided to retire in the countryside where they have enjoyed the last 24 years of Pat’s life together.

Pat was known for her deep faith, her love of family and friends, being a real ‘go-getter’, and her unflinching positive attitude, despite living half her life with debilitating chronic illnesses since her mid-40’s.

Before incurring her chronic illnesses, she lived a full life raising her two children as a working mom, starting her own commercial real-estate company in Brentwood, regularly volunteering to serve those less privileged, being a founding member of Brentwood’s Clearview Baptist Church, and even starting an all-ages rock club for teenagers at the local YMCA. She was indeed a go-getter, and stayed active!

After Pat’s illness and having to effectively retire early at 44 and bring all her activities to a sudden halt, she later found solace volunteering to teach Bible Study classes to nursing home residents and prisoners in Columbia,TN. She also stayed engaged with church, family and friends as much as her health would allow. When her son Michael and daughter Cleo Michele and their spouses were in town visiting from their homes in New York City, Shanghai, China and Munich, Germany, Pat loved getting out with her ‘kids’ for local excursions to good restaurants, hearing live music, and over the last 9 years playing with her grandson Caspar.

With her husband Mike, Pat shared a love of family and friends; watching daily Bible studies together; watching golf and Bama play football; taking care of their beloved pets; and enjoying quiet time on the front porch taking in their beautiful view of the Culleoka rolling hills, on what they call their ‘‘Morning Side of the Mountain’’. Most of all, Pat and Mike shared an unwavering love, a deep friendship, and Christian faith, all which held them together through the good times and the hard times since those early days of ‘going steady’ in Anniston, Alabama high school.

Pat is survived by her husband Mike Godsey, daughter Cleo Michele Godsey, son in-law Hubertus Breuer and grandson Caspar Breuer. Her son, Michael Godsey, passed away at age 47 in May 2012. Her sister, Charlie Ann Still, passed away at age 15 in 1963.

One of my best memories of Pat is her holding my baby girls shortly after they were born she was such a loving woman and so excited Cleo for you to have a baby and I know that Casper‘s birth put her over the moon. She sent me a kind letter after that meeting and shared photos of me and the girls. She really went out of her way to make me feel special. Whenever I was around her at your house or other times, I felt her love and nurturing.

I remember high school days where Pat would make sure Michele and our many friends were doing the right thing. Be that communicating where we were going to telling her where we had been. Pat set the stage for me to emulate a perfect Mom including the silly efforts to achieve being the mom of the year. Cleo, your parents moved to Nashville so you could go to HHS and be closer to your brother. It was a gift to so many of us. Love you and holding you close to my heart. I wish I could be there with you this week. XOXO

I am so sad to hear about Pat. I thought about her so much but I hadn’t been able to make it down to see her. I fell and broke my hip and had to have hip replacement and then I started having trouble with a slow heartbeat and had to have a pacemaker. Getting old has a lot of challenges. I will always cherish our memories. She was such a faithful friend and we had a lot of good times together. I wish I could come to her funeral but it is extremely cold here and we got more snow yesterday so the roads are super slick. I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers. If Mike feels like talking on the phone, please send me his telephone number and I will call him.
