Obituary

Milton Pierce, a cherished pastor, devoted family man, and loving father, peacefully departed this world on July 23, 2026, at the age of 63. Born on June 24, 1963, in the quaint town of Cataula, Georgia, Milton was the beloved son of Robert and Yvonne Pierce. His life was a testament to faith, love, and service.

Milton's journey in life was marked by a deep commitment to his faith and community. From a young age, he felt the call to ministry. Shortly after being baptized in 1978, he preached his first sermon on February 9, 1983, at Greater Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church. This was the beginning of a lifelong dedication to serving God and advancing His kingdom. During Greater Mt. Carmel’s Fall Revival on October 23, 1986, Milton was ordained under the leadership of the late Pastor J. D. Montgomery. Picking up the mantle, he later became the church’s esteemed pastor on December 5, 1998, faithfully leading and inspiring its members until the Lord called him home.

Under Pastor Pierce’s leadership, Greater Mt. Carmel built a brighter future for generations to come. Through the establishment of PROGENY, the children’s ministry, and Chosen, the young adult ministry, he created spaces where individuals could grow in faith, discover their purpose, and develop as leaders.

Milton was a man of wisdom and compassion, qualities that shine brightly in both his personal and professional life. After graduating from Kettering High School in 1986, he pursued higher education at Mercy College of Detroit, where he received his bachelors degree of Social Work. He worked as a social worker for several years, allowing him to develop skills that served him well in ministry and leadership.

Pastor Pierce, affectionately known as “dad” to his four sons, Jaye, Nicolas, Chad, and Devin, cherished his role as a father, and took pride in preparing them for manhood. His family was his pride and joy, and he cherished his role as a father, instilling in his children the values of kindness, perseverance, and faith.

Milton's legacy of faith, love, and devotion is carried on by his children, mother, siblings, and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and close friends. His church family also mourns his passing, remembering him as a pillar of strength and a beacon of hope.

His family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to all who have supported them during this difficult time.

Rest in peace, dad, son, brother, uncle, friend, and Pastor. Your life was a blessing, and your memory, including your many sermons, will live in our hearts forever.

In the words you often shared, “My tongue is the pen of the ready writer. I pray that the hearts and minds of Your children act as the paper to receive the message." And through your teachings, we have received that message.

Installation Service as Interim Pastor

Pastor Pierce’s installation service to become Interim Pastor marked the beginning of a devoted season of spiritual leadership and service to Greater Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church. Surrounded by family, fellow clergy, and church members, he accepted the sacred call to shepherd God’s people with faith, compassion, and integrity. The occasion reflected his lifelong commitment to ministry.

I first met Milton in high school through his sister Tresa at a Student Council picnic, and years later, I was blessed to have him as my pastor during my time at Greater Mt. Carmel.

Pastor Pierce was a man of excellence in the Word of God. He was one of the kindest men I have ever known, carrying himself with the quiet strength of a gentle giant. Men like Pastor Pierce are rare. They are handcrafted by the Lord, uniquely gifted to touch the lives of others. To have been called his friend, to have learned from him, laughed with him, and shared in his life is a blessing I will always treasure. His friendship and the impact he made on my life will remain forever in my heart.

May God richly bless his children and water every seed that Pastor Pierce faithfully planted throughout his life. May those seeds continue to bear fruit for generations to come, bringing hope, faith, and the love of Christ to all whose lives they touch. My dearest friend Milton—I still laugh when I call you Pastor Pierce, and you would say, "It’s still Milton." We had a rare and special bond that spanned a lifetime, from the hallways of Joyce Elementary all the way to our graduation at Kettering. Walking alongside you from the fifth grade onward was a profound gift. Watching you grow from a childhood friend into an extraordinary man of God was nothing short of inspiring. You became a pillar of the community, a devoted husband, and a loving father whose impact reached far beyond the pulpit. I am so deeply blessed to have called you a friend. Whenever life brought tough times or difficult crossroads in my career, you were the person I could always turn to. You offered a listening ear, taking that intentional, grounding pause whenever I came to you for direction to help me make the right decisions. One of the last things you told me was, “I cannot run from God’s calling.” Because of that, I stopped running, and things have been so much better.
Though you left this world far too soon, there is comfort in knowing that you are now at peace—no more troubles, no more pain, no more sickness, and no more sorrow. My deepest thoughts, love, and prayers remain with your sons and your entire family (also to Herman to mention), holding fast to the faith that they now have a great and loving angel watching over them.
I will miss you and love you always. See you one day in Heaven, and we will break bread together in the presence of the Lord.

To my childhood pastor, thank you for being such a blessing to the Smith family. Greater Mt. Carmel is our home, and having known Pastor Pierce since I was six, he felt like family. Thank you, Pastor, for always being there, from praying for us at my dad’s funeral to officiating the services for my uncle and aunties throughout the years. Words cannot express how much I’m going to miss you. Thinking about all the conversations, laughter, and good times we shared brings both comfort and sadness. Those memories will never be forgotten.

When you got sick, I always believed you would get better. I never imagined the time would be so short. I know at first you weren’t ready to leave, and I know you gave everything you had to get better and to stay here with us. But in the end, in a way that I couldn’t see at the time, you did get better. God welcomed you into a body free from pain, suffering, and sickness.

I don't know where to begin. I know most of you know know him as your brother, friend, or pastor but I know him as just " Milton". I got introduced to through at the time my closest high school friend Tresa. From there I spent a lot of time around the Pierce Family so became a part of the Family. Milton and I saw each other a lot and had a little crush on each other. I went away to college and life took us in different directions. Tresa moved away to Cleveland and I to Texas so distance seperated us unlike before. Even with this though we kept in touch. When I got a text that Milton was no longer with us it hurt and was unbelievable. I know that it will take some time to become real. I am grateful that he is not in any pain right now. I will cherish the memories of such a handsome, gentle giant. My condolences and prayers are with the family at this time.🥲❤️🙏🏽

I saw Milton as Uncle Milton but overall i saw him a child of God. I have so many Fond memories with him. Like going to Church on New Year’s eve and begging and pleading on spending the night with all of my cousins or playing around in church and having to call out mid Sermon. Recently i called him to talk about my faith and my life growing as a man. He told me “Growing Pains” Us as Humans grow through changes within ourselves. It’s Either good or bad but we have to keep the good and make sure the we take care of the bad and turn it into good. He told me that he was very proud of me because he seen me grow into this 17 year old child that brought his nephew into this world into a Man walking through life as a child of God. Before he hung up he told me “Keep Holding on” sounding like Grandma (Lol) but We will miss him being silly with all of us and Sharing his relationship with God.

I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Reverend Pierce. My family, the Jackson and Rhodes families, introduced me to Christ under the guidance of Reverend J.D. Montgomery when I was very young. Reverend Pierce later succeeded him and provided spiritual leadership throughout many of my formative years.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Pierce family and the entire Greater Mt. Carmel community. Thank you, Reverend Pierce, for your faithful leadership, your service and your many years of spreading the gospel.
