Obituary

Pamela Elaine Regan Hyde, known lovingly as Pam, passed away on July 18, 2026, in Chicago, Illinois after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 78 years old.
Pam was born on September 28, 1947, in Brooklawn, New Jersey, to the late William Rayfield Regan and Vivian West Warren. She grew up with a natural warmth and curiosity that would shape the rest of her life.
Pam possessed a remarkable gift for caring for people and embraced that calling with quiet strength, steadfast optimism, and grace. Even in life's most difficult moments, her sense of humor brought light and joy to those around her.
While pursuing an education degree at Gwynedd Mercy University, Pam met the love of her life in 1967 while on Spring Break at Daytona Beach, Florida. After marrying Art in 1968, she finished her degree and began her career as an elementary school teacher in Philadelphia. After taking an extended break to make her way to Oak Park, Illinois and raise her three children, she returned to the classroom and taught third grade at Willard Elementary in River Forest. Her gift for nurturing young minds led her to earn a master's degree in education and embark on a distinguished career in school leadership. She served as Assistant Principal at Elmwood School, then Principal at Blythe Park Elementary, before returning to River Forest to serve as Principal of Lincoln Elementary. Throughout her career, she touched the lives of countless students, families, teachers, and colleagues with her compassion, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to serving others.
The true measure of Pam's life cannot be found in awards or years of service. It lives in the countless adults who still remember feeling seen, encouraged, and loved as children because one principal believed they mattered.
Although she retired in 2015 and no longer supervised recess or coordinated lunchtime talent shows, her influence never retired. Her legacy continues in every act of kindness inspired by the example she set. The seeds Pam planted in thousands of young hearts will continue to grow for generations.
Beyond the school walls, Pam was a devoted wife, loving mother, a cheerful neighbor, and an empathetic friend. But what truly shaped the course of her adult life was her dedication as a caregiver to her homebound son, David, who lived a remarkable forty eight years with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, largely due to her tireless love, care, and sacrifice. Her devotion to prayer and her extraordinary faith in God lent her strength that carried her through heroic trials and inspired all.
Her compassion extended into every corner of her life. Family, faith, and service were the foundations upon which she built everything she did.
A life devoted to lifting others is never truly gone. It lives on wherever compassion is chosen, courage is taught, and every child is reminded that they are enough.
Yet those who knew Pam know she was far more than enough—she was exceptional.
While we mourn her passing, we celebrate a life of extraordinary love, generosity, and purpose. More than anything, we will continue to love her fiercely, forever and ever. Amen.
Pam is survived by her devoted son, Adam Stephen Hyde (Ruth) of South Bend, Indiana; her loving daughter, Alicia Laura Hyde of Los Angeles, California; her grandsons, Charles David Hyde and Vance Barron Hyde, of South Bend, Indiana; her sister, Donna Cogan of Ambler, Pennsylvania; her beloved dog and faithful companion, Cocoa; and the many friends and neighbors in Oak Park who will forever miss her warm smile.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Arthur Hyde; her cherished son, David Michael Hyde; and her parents, Vivian West Warren and William Rayfield Regan.

Visitation

There will be a visitation on Thursday, August 6th from 4pm-8pm.

6:30-7:30: During this time family and friends will share beloved stories about Pam and/or their deep sentiments.  All are invited to share, or to just come and join in this special memorial time.
Parking is limited in the lot.  Carpooling is encouraged.  There is also street parking on North Avenue and the side streets.

Memorial Service

Memorial Mass celebrating Pam's life will be held on Friday, August 7, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Giles Parish, 1025 Columbian Avenue, Oak Park, Illinois 60302.  Private interment to follow the Mass.

When I served as president of Lincoln School PTO, I saw firsthand how many countless hours Pam spent making sure every single child was thought about. She spent the entire summer with every child’s name on an index card, moving their name from class to class to make sure that each child was with the teacher who could help them the most. She didn’t use a spreadsheet or anything else - just those index cards and her knowledge of each and every student and teacher. Pam went above and beyond in everything she did and always did it with a smile. She was one of the best and will be truly missed.

I am so sad to learn of Pam’s passing. We served as principals together in River Forest from 2009-2014. I can only echo the sentiments shared is this lovely tribute to who Pam was. She gave selflessly, honestly and passionately to support all of those in her circle. I am grateful for her service to our profession and am a better person for having known her. My favorite story was the one she shared about driving at 14 in NJ when she had no business doing so. I wish I could attend services but I will not be in town. Holding her family in my heart.

Pam what a great woman. She was an educator, friend and many times our psychiatrist. She always made time to listen to you. I would start at 6am and many times she was there before me. I would be her handy man and her home life was very demanding she was a Saint.  All of us will miss her dearly.

Pam was the Principal at my daughter Vivian's elementary school in River Forest.  Pam was a kind and caring soul.  When Vivian was going through an extreme bout of separation anxiety and depression Pam stepped right in and helped soothe Viv and made her feel welcome.  Pam shared that her mother's name was Vivian and I know that made my Vivian feel a special connection with Pam.
She will be sorely missed.

I am so sorry to hear of Pam's passing.  I talked to her many times, and was so hopeful that her treatment would conquer this cancer.
Pam and I met when we were 15 and I moved to Brooklawn N.J..  We became close friends, and shared many adventures growing up.   Our paths went in different directions, but we always kept close contact through notes and phone calls.  She was a very special part of my life, and will always have a special place in my heart.  My condolences go out to her beautiful family ,who she loved and adored.  May your wonderful memories fill your hearts and get you through this difficult time.  She was truly an angel!

I remember a quote of Pam‘s that has stayed with me for many many years.” love your children the way they are not the way you want them to be.” Pam was a remarkable person. Many parents requested that their students be placed in her third grade classroom. She was truly beautiful outside and inside.

I knew Pam when she was a third grade teacher at Willard. I remember finding her to be totally professional, with a wonderful smile and a way of making anyone whom she met feel welcome. She always seemed like such a devoted mother and wife. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Pam Hyde was an extraordinary human as we all know. And what makes her so remarkable is that each person has a beautiful story of how she impacted their lives. My daughter Brett started to struggle in the third grade. Mrs Hyde went above and beyond to support her. Often opening up her office so Brett could compose herself. Brett was a flight risk so if Brett tried to run they would go on the intercom “Dr. Seuss is on the loose.” Keeping her discreetly safe. How can I express my love for Pam. From the minute I met her as Principal at Blythe Park, we connected as very special friends. I was the secretary and was fortunate to follow her later to Lincoln School as secretary. She had a love for children that was unmistakable. Her devotion to her family was amazing!! I loved her sense of humor and just hanging with her. We shared much of our lives over the years. I will miss my dear friend while here on earth, but I know her faith in Jesus was her assurance of heaven, and I will see her again.
