Obituary
Nancy Jean Bernhardt was born in 1953 to Wallace Jacob and Betty Jean Albright. Her loving family included her children Brenna Buckley (husband Clifton/”Buck”), Amber Bernhardt, and Jerrid Bernhardt (wife Sally); her grandchildren, William and Maggie Buckley; her brother, Ralph Albright (wife Janis); and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
After graduating from Dulles High School in 1971, Nancy attended Texas A&M University, and earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. While attending college, she met the father of her children, Jerry Bernhardt, and became a mother of three. She spent many happy years raising her children and teaching elementary school in Conroe, Texas. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, Conroe, and enjoyed spending time with her teacher friends. Later, she earned her Master’s degree at Sam Houston State University, and became a reading specialist.
Nancy was an avid reader, she loved diet Coke, Aggie football, teaching children and adults to read, and the beach. But above all, she loved being a mom and a grandmother. When her grandchildren were born, Nancy quickly became known as Nan, to many family and friends. She retired from teaching and dedicated her time to being a grandmother and volunteering with children and family ministries at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, in Wimberley, Texas.
Nan’s favorite place to be was the beach, and the beaches of Fairhope, Alabama always held a special place in her heart. The dream for Nan was to live in Fairhope, which she did for many years. She combined her love of the beach with the love of her children and grandchildren by traveling with family to many beaches from Hawaii to Maine.
Towards the end of her life, Nancy returned to Conroe, Texas, and then finally to her daughter Amber’s home, where she passed away peacefully in her sleep on New Year’s Eve 2024.
A memorial service, followed by a reception, will be held at Unity of Houston on February 1, 2025 at 11:30am, 2929 Unity Drive, Houston, TX 77057.
A Celebration of Life, at Saint Stephen's Episcopal Church, will be held on February 2, 2025 at 1pm, 6000 FM 3237, Wimberley, TX 78676
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Nancy’s memory to the Parkinson’s Foundation.
