What we once enjoyed and deeply loved we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes part of us. — Helen Keller

Obituary

It is with enormous sadness that we share the news that Mike Jackson has passed away, following the recent loss of his beloved wife, Cheryl.

For so many years, Mike and Cheryl were simply part of the fabric of our road racing community.

Mike gave an extraordinary amount to the sport. As a commissaire, organiser and mentor, he was a hugely respected figure in racing, but his contribution went far beyond the roles he held.

He gave his time freely, shared his knowledge and helped nurture the next generation of race officials. To many he was a mentor and role model; to many more, a friend.

And wherever Mike was, Cheryl was rarely far away.

Cheryl was one of those wonderfully positive people you were always pleased to see at a bike race. A familiar face at sign-on and around events, she was welcoming, supportive and somehow always brought a sense of calm to the usual chaos of bike racing.

Together, Mike and Cheryl supported our cycling community for many, many years. The SSSCCRRL was a huge part of that, with Mike working tirelessly to keep Thursday night racing on the road and Cheryl alongside him throughout.

We are incredibly proud to continue a league they both gave so much to. The standards Mike set, the knowledge he passed on and the people he helped develop will remain part of this league and our wider racing community for years to come.

Perhaps the greatest tribute we can pay is simply to keep doing it. To put races on the road, welcome people into the sport, support those coming through and maintain the standards Mike set.

Mike and Cheryl were inseparable. After the sadness of losing them both in such a short space of time, there is some comfort in knowing that they are together again.

Mentors, role models and, above all, friends.

Thank you, Mike and Cheryl, for everything you gave to our sport.

You will both be very deeply missed.
