Your legacy of love will forever light our way.

Obituary

Michael was a Navy brat and moved from city to city for the first six years of life and, with every new city, he had a new brother or sister. His last stop was San Diego in 1956. He attended Chesterton Elementary, Montgomery Junior High, and graduated from Kearny High School in 1967.

After graduation, Michael started working at CalFire. Michael never stayed at one assignment for more than a couple of years. He had a very diverse career with CalFire. He was always involved in training and writing curriculum. Michael won the CalFire Chief's "Instructor of the Year" in 2004. Like most firefighters, Michael had a second job working with Charles Faust making sand castings for banks, restaurants, etc. After 35 years working for CalFire, he went to work for the US DHS Interoperable Communication Technical Assistance Program for 20 years and traveled to all 50 states and territories teaching communication classes, facilitating exercises, writing curriculum, and assisting in National Special Security Events.

Michael is survived by his wife Anni, two brothers (John & Peter), two sisters (Cindy & Pattie), two children Megan (Sean) and Fletcher (Johna), and five grandchildren. He is predeceased by his mom and stepdad (Ed & Doris McGrath), his brother (Steve), and sister (Laura).

I worked with Mike for a handful of years on the DHS ICTAP program. We traveled all over the country training public safety-first responders. Mike was an incredible talent. A true public safety professional and a pleasure to work with. We called him the Godfather of ICS! I am deeply saddened by his passing and only wish that I could have spent more time with him before he passed. You will be missed Sir.

I only knew Michael in an official capacity through the Communications Unit Courses. However, he was well liked and full of knowledge. He will be missed. Texas COMU

My big brother, Michael, truly lived an amazing life! Although he left home when he was young and I was just a child, we reconnected as adults. In those later years, I was able to know that Michael had the kindest soul who fiercely loved his family and close friends.

I will forever cherish the memories we made – eating at Point Loma Seafood and Mitch’s; hanging out at the beach and zoo, and picnics in the backyard. I will miss hearing your stories about work and family and just hanging out together, but I find peace and comfort knowing that you are with Mumsy, Stephen, and Laura.

Michael, I am forever thankful to have called you my brother.

Love you!

Michael was a mentor and a friend who pushed me to become an instructor and made me a better COML and COMT. He is both directly and indirectly responsible for a large cadre of Communications professionals protecting our nation daily. I will always remember our chats and shared experiences on the road and all those meals we broke brad on. He loved his family and loved his work. If the family here in the Valley of The Sun ever needs anything. Please don't hesitate to reach out.
