Obituary
Michael J. Otten passed away surrounded by the love of his family, leaving behind a lifetime of cherished memories, laughter, and unwavering devotion to those he loved.
Mike was the beloved husband of nearly 54 years to the love of his life, Nancy Otten. Their journey together began as students at Bergan High School in Peoria, Illinois. He was a devoted father to Michelle (Dave) Riney and an extraordinary grandfather to Piper and Jack, who brought him endless pride and joy. Above all else, Mike’s greatest accomplishment was his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. John and Nora Jane Otten, and his sister, Mary Lynn Otten. He is also survived by his siblings, Janet Burke and Kevin Otten.
Mike was a lifelong learner with an incredible passion for science and education. He earned his undergraduate degree from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, followed by a master’s degree from Illinois State University and a Ph.D. in Microbiology from Chicago Medical School.
A man of many talents, Mike seemed able to master anything he set his mind to. Long before computers became commonplace, he was writing computer programs and embracing emerging technology. He could repair just about anything and solve problems that left others stumped. He proudly passed down these talents to his daughter, teaching her to approach challenges with confidence and determination.
Mike was also an accomplished athlete. He loved sports throughout his life and was an exceptional skier and swimmer. He remained an avid Chicago sports fan, enthusiastically cheering on the Cubs and the Bears throughout every season.
For the past 30 years, Mike courageously battled multiple sclerosis with remarkable strength and resilience. Even while facing the challenges of the disease, he continued to inspire those around him with his perseverance, positive outlook, and determination.
To his many friends, Mike was best known for his infectious sense of humor. He was often the life of the party, delighting everyone with his unforgettable impressions, quick wit, and boundless creativity. Mike will be deeply missed not only by his immediate family but also by his extended family and countless friends.
