To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.

Obituary

Dad, you lived a remarkable life, and we have so much to be thankful for.
From your days at King's College, Lagos, to your years representing Nigeria around the world, you achieved so much, but you never lost sight of your faith or the importance of family.
You were an exceptional father and the most loving grandfather, who set a wonderful example for us all. Your love, wisdom, kindness and the values you passed on will stay with us and the generations that follow.
Reading your own account of your life, one thing comes through so clearly: your gratitude to God for everything. You always believed that His grace had guided you through life.
We are immensely proud of all you accomplished, but even more grateful for the father and grandfather you were. You gave us so much to look up to and so many wonderful memories to cherish.
You lived a long and fulfilled life, Dad, and although we will miss you dearly, we thank God for the many years we were blessed to have you.
Rest peacefully, Dad. You will always be loved and never forgotten.

A Tribute to My Dear Uncle, Ambassador Segun Onanaiye

I remember my dear uncle, Ambassador Segun Onanaiye, with deep affection and gratitude—a kind-hearted man whose wonderful sense of humour and enjoyable company left me with memories I will always cherish.

I remain especially grateful for the time I spent living with him shortly after my graduation. That season gave me the opportunity to experience his kindness, appreciate his personality and enjoy the warmth behind his sometimes tough exterior.

One memory that still brings a smile to my face is his familiar reminder: “Monsur Tobi, always remember to turn off the lights in your room and save energy!” Those simple words capture something I will always remember about him—his practical wisdom, his humour and his unmistakable way of making a point.

His passing leaves a deep sense of loss. We will miss his presence, his laughter and the moments of everyday companionship that become so precious when a loved one is gone.

Yet, even in our grief, we are comforted by the assurance that he is resting with the Lord. Our sorrow is held by the hope we have in Christ—the promise of resurrection, reunion and everlasting life in His presence.

We find comfort in the words of Scripture:

“But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.

“For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.

“Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words.”

—1 Thessalonians 4:13–18, NKJV

To Olumide, Roli and the entire family, my heartfelt condolences. May the Lord strengthen and comfort us all, and may the precious memories of his life, kindness and humour remain alive in our hearts, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Rest well in the Lord, dear Uncle Segun. You are deeply loved and will be dearly missed.

Precious uncle was a father and mentor in a million. He picked me up from Dulles airport February 1971 through the snow filled roads to his home in Bethesda, Md. Uncle literally ensured I got the best of the best, as an LASG scholar. Funtimes with uncle & aunty Jumoke and our darling super energetic baby Funmi, were precious moments that I’ll cherish forever.
Uncle was a super hero of a dad. I love you to bits uncle. Rest peacefully now in paradise. Keep the angels 😇 laughing. Orun rere sir.
