Obituary
Michael “Mitch” Burke, 60, passed away on March 18, 2025, in Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico. His sudden departure leaves a deep void in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Born on January 11, 1965, in Omaha, Nebraska, Mitch spent his formative years building friendships and memories that would last a lifetime. He graduated from Monterey High School, where he formed bonds that remained strong throughout his life. Mitch went on to attend California State University, Sacramento, earning his bachelor’s degree in Communication. His time at CSU Sacramento was marked by his involvement with the radio station Y-92.5—a passion that left a lasting legacy commemorated by a brick in the library quad.
During college, Mitch worked as a pool boy and led recreational activities at the Village Apartment Complex. It was there that he met the love of his life, Terri. Their connection blossomed into a beautiful marriage that spanned 28 years and brought them two children—David and Shannon—who were the center of Mitch’s world.
Mitch began his professional career at Y-92.5 radio station in Sacramento. Starting in the promotions department, he quickly rose to become a producer for the morning show. His charisma and creativity made him a natural fit for the fast-paced world of radio. Later, he transitioned into sales—a decision driven by his desire to spend more time with his family.
Family was always Mitch’s priority. He dedicated several years as a full-time caretaker for his elderly parents and embraced the role of stay-at-home father with unwavering devotion. As his children grew older, Mitch found new purpose as a substitute teacher within the Elk Grove Unified School District. He especially loved teaching elementary students at Markofer Elementary School, where he became a beloved presence known for his warmth and enthusiasm.
Mitch’s passions extended far beyond the classroom. He was an avid traveler who shared countless adventures with Terri—from exploring ancient ruins in Rome to relaxing on the sun-drenched beaches of Hawaii. A lifelong learner with a deep love for history, he was particularly fascinated by the Knights Templar and Vikings. He also enjoyed reading action-packed novels by Clive Cussler and spending "quiet" moments with his two dogs, Luna and Gertie.
Mitch was deeply involved in his community and family life. A proud Boy Scout parent and troop leader for over 13 years, he took great pride in guiding young scouts—including his son David—on their journeys. One of his proudest moments was witnessing David achieve Eagle Scout rank in 2017.
Those who knew Mitch remember him as the life of every gathering—his laughter infectious, his spirit uplifting. He had an extraordinary gift for making people feel seen and valued, whether they were lifelong friends or strangers passing by. His friendships spanned decades; some lasted over 50 years and were cherished deeply.
Mitch is survived by his beloved wife Terri; his son David; daughter Shannon; brother Kevin; and sister Maureen “Mojo.” He was preceded in death by his mother Anna Donovan Burke; father Dr. David Burke; and brother Sean “Fuzz” Burke.
A celebration of Mitch’s life will be held at a later date to honor the joy he brought into so many lives.
