Maureen Gritton

Obituary

LMaureen Linnebach Gritton, age 86, returned peacefully to her Heavenly Father on March 30, 2024, with her family by her side. Mom loved life, was a fighter and in the end, her beautiful heart gave all the love it had to give.

She was born at home on November 13, 1937, to Ethel and Arthur Linnebach in Salt Lake City, Utah, to a large and loving family. She made sure that her children were raised close to her siblings and their families.

Maureen married her husband of 68 years, Gerald Leslie Gritton on November 17, 1955, and together they raised four beautiful and loving children in Midvale, Utah, where they continued to reside. She made each child believe that they were her favorite.

She graduated from Granite High School in 1955, where she was a member of the Pep Club and was awarded the Sterling Scholar award in sewing.

Maureen began her career as a beautician in 1967, graduating from beauty school in 1968. Soon thereafter, she opened “Maureen’s House of Curls” in May of 1969 and loved every minute spent visiting with her friends and her (“Ladies”) and making them beautiful. She only recently retired in January 2024 (which was such a hard decision for her).

Maureen had a work ethic like none other. She created a loving home for her family and took immense pride in creating a beautiful yard and attending to her roses and flowers. Most of all, she loved family traditions and being with her family. She would light up and fill the room with joy whenever she was with them, and she had a way of making everyone feel special. She made sure that her children were taught to serve others in need, and she was the perfect example of how to live those principles.

She loved to read. You would often find her curled up in her chair with her new library book and treats. She also loved shopping and supporting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with their sporting and school events. She loved all things outdoors, especially traveling (as long as she could visit a botanical garden of some kind) and was always ready for the next adventure.

Maureen was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and held many positions throughout her life. She especially loved working with the primary children. She had a strong testimony of the Gospel and believed that her good health and stamina was a direct result of keeping the commandments. She had a beautiful voice, loved music and especially singing in the Ward Choir.

Maureen is survived by her husband of 68 years, two daughters and two sons: Lori Loumis (Johnny); Guy Gritton (Rose); Allen Gritton (Susan) Jodi Gritton; 17 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; and her brother Glen Linnebach. She is preceded in death by her parents, sisters: Lois Rampton (Charles); Carol Tycksen (Cecil); Diane Bleckert (Max); Gwen Cottle (Darwin), sister-in-law Beverly Linnebach and a brother, Gary Linnebach.

I met Grandma Gritton in 1999. The first thing she said to me was you can call me grandma and from that moment that is exactly what I did . I didn’t even know her real name for a couple years after meeting her . I instantly loved her dearly . she was very sweet to me and reminded me of my grandma whom I am very close with . Throughout the years she always showed me so much love and kindness . I have many memories with my best friend Melissa sitting at her house eating cookies , chimichangas or sitting out by the flowers . She would always take us shopping and out to lunch , she was the best . I loved her so much and she will be greatly missed . I will forever cherish our moments together . One thing that always stood out to me is that she was so sweet and kind to everyone she met . She was one of a kind , beyond special . She will be greatly missed . Love you Grandma Gritton .

I met Maureen in 1997 when she rescued me from a disastrous perm. I loved our visits where we would talk about good books, our families, and solve the world’s problems. I drove from Farmington to Midvale because she was that good. I am unable to attend her funeral because I am having surgery tomorrow. I send my love to her family. 🥰

Maureen began doing my hair . . . especially perms . . . in 1969, when I was 28 years old. She gave me the last good perm I'll ever have in April 2023, when I turned 82. That's a long time, and no one will ever match the quality of her work! She was like the Energizer Bunny, bouncing back every time from many serious health problems that would have flattened anyone else. She was always cheerful, a good listener, and one of my oldest and dearest friends. She will be greatly missed . . . There will never be another like her!
