I met Matt in 1986 when he came to San Diego for a conference. Roger was in the last year of his neurology residency and would be joining Matt’s practice in a few months, but I still had not met Matt. We met in the hotel lobby, and I saw the bow tie, the patched elbow blazer, the quintessential Menken. I took a picture of Matt and Roger, because I had a strong feeling that this was the beginning of a long professional and personal relationship and I wanted to document it. I still have the picture, and hopefully I can find and post it here. My hunch turned out to be right. Matt was good to us as a young couple just starting out, and good to us as a growing family. It took my daughters a long time to realize that he wasn’t actually a relative. When I heard that Matt passed away, memories of that hotel lobby meeting flashed through my mind. It feels like yesterday. My sincere condolences to Katie, Kenny, and their families.

Here’s one of my favorite Matthew Menken stories, one that I told to Tova, Devorah, and Gali as they were driving home yesterday.

My graduate school friend Mary Breckenridge took a job at Rutgers Medical School. One day, sitting in her office, she heard gales of laughter from the lecture hall down the corridor and, of course, went to investigate. She stood riveted. There was Matt Menken lecturing to a class of medical school students, giving a talk full of neurology information in such a way that they were fully attentive and at the same time so funny that they couldn’t help breaking into laughter.

Matt was a brilliant teacher – able to communicate complex ideas in ways that were immediately understandable and fun to listen to. What a legacy!
