Obituary
Mary Agnes Navaratnam of Harrow, Middlesex, UK, passed away peacefully on Wednesday 11th of September 2024, aged 95 years old.
Agnes was born on the 9th August 1929 in Chindukuli, Jaffna, Sri Lanka to the late Soosaipillai Seemampillai and the late Helen Semmampillai. She was the eldest of her three siblings, Dr Rev S J Emmanuel, Xavier Seemampillai and the late Mary Anne Thambiratnam.
She was a very hardworking, accomplished and respected teacher throughout her long career. She started as an English Assistant teacher and entered Colombogam Teacher Training College. She became a teacher and taught at Jaffna Convent School for many years until her retirement. Agnes was very passionate about the Arts, and enjoyed taking part in drama competitions in which she won national awards.
She married her devoted husband William John Navaratnam, a teacher at St Patrick's College, in 1958. She was a loving mother to Judy and Chithro, cherished mother in law to Reggie and Anton and beloved grandmother to her four grandchildren, Jonathan, Gabby, Kayshana and Ayona.
After retiring from teaching, she moved to the UK in 1989 where she lived in Harrow. She lived a holy life of faith, attended mass regularly at her local parish church St John Fisher RC, Harrow. She also attended prayer groups and senior citizen social events and was a valued member of her local community.
She passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loved ones. She was the pillar of her family and will be greatly missed. We pray that God may grant her eternal peace and rewards.
