Martha Weaver, A life well lived
As friends and family know, Martha loved being active and most of us have been on at least one outdoor adventure with her. She valued a healthy lifestyle, being outdoors, nature, having fun, her community and she was a life-long learner. Martha was always up for an adventure, especially if it involved breaking the rules. She had a positive attitude and made the most out of whatever situation she was in.
Martha was born in Sioux City, Iowa and became a Hawkeye at the University of Iowa. After graduation, she lived in Denver and worked as a teacher and as a part-time ski instructor. She met fellow ski instructor John Engelen in Vail and later married him and moved to Calgary, Alberta where they had two children: Robert and Susan. Having children did not slow Martha down or tame her adventurous spirit. She continued to ski with her children and went on a helicopter ski trip with friends.
Through her work as an airline ground hostess, she traveled extensively. Of the many memorable trips Martha took with her family in Canada, the US and other countries - Europe, Australia and Japan were especially memorable for her children. New adventures were found when the family moved to a ranch a few hours outside of Calgary. Some favorite activities were riding horses and skiing with a water skiing rope behind a snowmobile.
In 1985, her son started college in Alberta and Martha and her daughter moved to Denver. She met Clark Weaver the following year at the Bolder Boulder Memorial Day race. They married and were together 29 years, until Clark’s passing in 2015. After moving to Denver Martha obtained a masters degree in education and worked as a teacher until she retired. After retiring, she continued to enjoy traveling and staying active by leading wild flower tours and going on kayaking and hiking adventures with a hiking group in Denver and one in Fountain Hills, AZ (where Clark and Martha lived for many years during the winter).
Martha spent the last 4 years of her life at Modena, Cherry Creek. She taught a resident art class and a breathing and movement class called Qigong. She hand-painted cards and made sure each resident received a signed card for their birthday. She enjoyed feeding the goats at the neighboring day school and going for walks along the nearby trails. In 2023, she visited L.A. for a Make a Wish trip she was awarded which included a behind-the-scenes tour of the Getty art museum - and she spent the holidays in Fountains Hills with her children and grandchildren. This past fall, Martha travelled to Durham, NC with her daughter to see her granddaughter at Duke. They visited the university’s gardens, went on an amazing private tour of the Duke Lemur center and enjoyed local restaurants. Martha was grateful for the life she lived and she will be missed by her family, friends and community.
