Obituary

With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Maria "Maggie" Ortiz, who was born on August 18, 1952 and passed away on March 19, 2026 in Albion, MI.

Maria Magdalena Ortiz, lovingly known as Maggie, entered eternal rest on March 19, 2026, after complications of lupus. She was born August 18, 1952, in Brownsville, Texas, and later made her home in Albion, Michigan.

A graduate of Albion Senior High School, Class of 1972, Maggie lived a life grounded in faith, family, and service. As a devoted member of the Pentecostal church, she showed compassion, humility, and generosity in everyday life. She was a loving partner, mother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend.

Maggie worked in several roles, including waitress, cook, factory worker, and caregiver. She also played a key role in the success of Lopez Taco House. She took pride in her work and cared deeply for others.

She was known for kindness, strong relationships, and a welcoming home where meals and comfort were always shared. Her presence brought people together, and her simple acts of care left lasting memories.

Maggie was preceded in death by her parents, Guadalupe Ortiz and Maria Garza Ortiz, and her siblings Maria Antonia “Toni” Lopez, Guadalupe “Pete” Ortiz, Conrado Ortiz, Tim “Gil” Ortiz, and Manuel “Rick” Ortiz. She is survived by her partner, Bob James, her children Sonja (Jeff) Willson and Robert “Bear” (Kathi Place) James, her grandchildren, Jared (Erika) Willson, Hannah (Kyle) Winchell, Courtney (Vito Barone) Willson, Jordan Willson, Kody Beals, MyLee James, Hailee James, and her great granddaughter Natalie Winchell, along with her brother Paulo “David” Ortiz of Austin, Texas, her sisters Manuela “Mannie” Block of Eaton Rapids, Michigan, Martha (Michael Reyes) Gonzales of Lansing, Michigan, and Sylvia Valdez of Austin, Texas, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Maggie leaves a legacy of faith, love, and quiet strength. She was a devoted partner, mother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. She will be remembered with deep respect and enduring love.

Maggie will be deeply missed and remembered with love.

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

Memory wall

Rumi, the poet and philosopher, once said:

“Do not grieve. Anything you lose comes round in another form.”

He did not say this to quiet your pain, but to remind you that nothing truly leaves us, not the people, not the moments. Loss is not an ending. It is a transformation. What leaves does not vanish, it changes shape, returning as strength, as peace, as light within us.

My sister’s favorite thing to do is travel. She loves seeing new places, making special memories, and taking in all the beauty around her. She has traveled to the Tennessee mountains with her friend Della, visited Niagara Falls, and even went to Las Vegas for Lorenzo’s wedding. Traveling brings her so much joy because she loves the scenery, the adventure, and the peaceful feeling of being somewhere new.
