It’s been hard to write this memorial because a part of me still doesn’t want to accept this immense loss.
I had the great privilege of working closely with Maletela, and from the very beginning, it was clear how special she was. She had a warmth that drew people in, a joyful spirit, and a laugh that could brighten any room. She was kind, humble, and deeply genuine — someone who truly cared about others and showed it in both small gestures and big actions.
Maletela’s work in civil registration and vital statistics went far beyond data — it was about dignity, visibility, and ensuring that every person, especially every child, was counted and cared for. She believed in building systems that would last, that would serve people long after the spotlight or funding faded. And she did it all with clarity, compassion, and grace.
Maletela had a beautiful way of bringing people together, of making complex things easier to understand, and of always putting others first. I will never forget her kindness, her sense of humor, and her gentle way of looking after those around her. She made a lasting difference in the world and in the lives of everyone lucky enough to know her — including mine.

Oh yhini Sisi!!
Sad news indeed. I only knew about this today . What an amazing soul you were .
Gone too soon.
Knowing you was such a pleasure . When Stats SA was Chair and Secretariat of the Africa Symposia on Statistical Development, I had a memorable opportunity to work with you closely . Your immense and dedicated contribution when the strategic focus shifted from the 2010 Round of Population and Housing Censuses to CRVS is unforgettable.
You did that with passion . You shone your light during the CRVS Ministers Conference, in Durban ,and you never hesitated to share your work with other countries when we hosted best practice sharing visits by other countries.
I was sad when you told me you were leaving Stats SA , but happy about your new life chapter.
We chatted a bit afterwards and I was still hoping to meet and catchup.
We have lost a beautiful person who impacted so many lives. I have never experienced such humility from a Dr , whom we were on a first name basis and who never even insisted to be addressed as a Dr , contrary to many who demand that.
l carry with me memories of your childlike innocent smile, your seriousness and strict side.
My heart goes to your family.
Rest well Sisi, you ran your life race with countless medals, and heaven has gained an angel.
Death be not proud.
May your beautiful and precious soul rest in eternal peace .
Condolences to your family
It is well!

Dear family,
Maletela had such positive presence, warmth and keen intellect; she had such an immense impact on all of us in the ID4D community and championed the rights of children to have proof of legal identity. I still remember the weeks she first moved to the US to join the Bank; she was curious, humble about her prior experiences, excited about what would be possible in her new role, and also so practical about moving to a new country (like recommendations for pediatricians since our kids were about the same age).
I am still in shock and disbelief of the news; her generosity is illustrated by the fact that just 7 days before she passed, she exchanged emails with me offering to talk to a friend who was interested in learning more about GFF…I had not seen Maletela in over a year and she did not mention her health at all, and instead immediately responded offering to talk to her. What a beautiful and generous soul who always put others ahead of herself.
Her warmth, generosity and work on behalf of children around the world will always have an impact on those of us lucky to have known her.
My sincere condolences to her family.

Maletela was a genuinely wonderful person. Always cheerful. I first met her during her time at StatSAfr around 2010, and from 2013 onward, we collaborated on CRVS activities in Lesotho, Tanzania, and several other African countries. She was deeply passionate about her areas of expertise and always generous and patient in sharing her knowledge and experience.
Our paths continued to cross at both continental and global levels after she joined GFF. Whether at workshops, sub-regional meetings, or major events like the Conferences of African Ministers for Civil Registration and the Statistical Commission for Africa, she remained focused, yet always cheerful when we shared reflective moments on the sidelines of these events. The last time I communicated with her was on April 1, 2025 - true to form, our short conversation centered on CRVS and what needed to be done in the immediate future. I still can’t believe she is gone.
I extend my heartfelt condolences to her children and close family. May her soul rest in peace. You will be missed, my dear young sister.

I just learned about your passing. May you rest in peace Maletela.
I have so many fond memories of our time together in Southampton — your warmth, your laughter, and the light you brought to every moment. You taught me so much about Lesotho and shared your culture with such pride and joy.
You were a joy to be around, and your spirit will always be remembered.
Rest peacefully, dear Maletela.

Tribute to Maletela Tuoane
🕊️❤️🌸
Today, we honour the radiant life of Maletela Tuoane — a woman whose kindness, wisdom, and unwavering strength touched every soul she encountered.
Maletela was a true reflection of grace — gentle in spirit, fierce in love, and faithful in heart 💫. She gave without expecting, loved without limits, and walked humbly in her purpose. Her laughter brought light, her advice brought calm, and her love brought healing 🤍.
To many, she was a guiding star — a mother, a sister, a leader, a friend 🌟. She lifted others even when she herself was weary, and inspired without ever trying to impress. Her legacy is written in the lives she changed and the hearts she warmed ❤️.
Though her earthly journey has come to an end, her spirit lives on — in our memories, our love, and the way we live from this day forward 🌺.
"Well done, good and faithful servant... Enter into the joy of your Lord."

In memory of my dear aunt.
She was one of my FAVOURITE aunts I’d hope to see at family events. She’d laugh at my jokes and we’d exchange wit and hugs. I wish I went to visit her like I promised last December, but I know seeing her that day made me feel so wonderful.
Wishing love to everyone who’s had the pleasure of hearing her laugh and witnessing her in her jokey moments. And may my little cousins never feel left or forgotten🤍 I love you guys, and I will always be here for you.

Today, we gather not only in grief but in deep gratitude — to honour the life, legacy, and light of Maletela Tuoane. A woman of grace, strength, and purpose, Maletela lived her life as a beacon of compassion and courage. She led not by loud declarations, but by quiet, consistent example — touching hearts, lifting others, and standing firm in her convictions.
To know Maletela was to experience kindness that knew no bounds and wisdom that often spoke louder in silence than in words. She carried herself with dignity, but never distanced herself from those in need. Whether as a mentor, sister, mother, colleague, or friend — she showed up, she gave, and she loved.
Her laughter could fill a room, and her presence brought calm to the storm. In her, we found both sanctuary and spark. She reminded us that legacy is not built in grand gestures, but in everyday acts of generosity, honesty, and love.
Though her physical presence is no longer with us, her spirit lives on — in the values she lived by, the lives she transformed, and the love she gave so freely.
Rest well, Maletela. Your journey on earth may be complete, but your light will forever shine in the stories we tell, the lessons we carry, and the hearts you’ve forever marked.
With deepest love and respect...

Dear bereaved family, at this time where grief desperately seeks solace, may you be comforted by the legacy Maletela has left - it will continue to live so that generations to come will count and be counted.
My dear Maletela, you were given the rare privilege to live a life in which your passion and profession align beautifully. It was not by chance but a recognition of your brilliance, shining through your humility. I recall being on mission in Guinea and witnessing a birth, and the almost immediate delivery of the child's birth certificate. I took a picture and sent it to you - I was so proud that I had finally understood what you were preaching. I continue to be proud of you, of knowing you, and of being a part of your calling. "Ubuntu" - "I am because you are".
With love,

I first knew 'Maletela as a School-leaving candidate at Morija Girls High School in '87 or so. I was already at University and we were together in the Student Christian Movement. Incidentally she's my cousin twice removed on our mothers' side! She was a confident young woman then and leading others in Christ. She then went to the University where I was and we continued in the SCM together, and she was smart, hardworking and loved life. She grew up to be one of the best intellectuals to come out of our country, and represented with dignity wherever she went. She will be so sorely missed by all of us her former SCM colleagues. May she rest in Glory.

I met Maletela in 2022 on an Ethiopian Airways flight from Dakar to Bamako. We sat next to each other not knowing each other. However, as I scrolled through my WhatsApp messages from AFRFEM, she said, "Ah, my sister, we are scrolling through the same messages." And we laughed loud and hugged. She had a kind soul. May she rest in perfect peace.

May the Lord grant her eternal rest and comfort the family.

She walked with quiet dignity,
A soul wrapped soft in empathy.
No need for crowns or grand acclaim—
Just kindness spoken in her name.
She knew the art of showing care,
A silent prayer, a steady stare.
She'd hold your hand and calm your storm,
Aunty, with a heart so warm.
She gave us more than she would say,
In meals prepared, in time she’d stay.
In every smile, in every chore,
She left her love, then gave us more.
And now the world feels not the same,
A softer light, a missing flame.
Her chair is still, her shoes untouched,
Yet we feel her presence just as much.
We'll carry on the love she sowed,
The gentle strength that always showed.
She may be gone from earthly view,
But Aunty lives in all we do.

Che Aus Maletela nnake!
I still can’t get used to your departure from this world. We’re going to miss you —you always showed us so much love, warmth, and generosity.
I remember your last visit to Addis, I came to see you at Hyatt hotel, I wasn’t feeling great and almost didn’t come, I was overwhelmed by life, and I didn’t want to end up crying in front of you. But I came anyway, and I’m so glad I did. I couldn’t hide how I was feeling, and when I told you, you listened with so much love and care. Your advice and insights lifted my spirit. By the time I left, I was laughing—you had turned my day around with such ease. You were always so open, and I felt like I could open up to you too.
We will truly miss you. Abraham and the girls are sooo heartbroken. Even though they only met you less than ten times, you left such a lasting mark on them. That’s just how amazing you were.

My deepest condolences to the Tuoane family. Aus 'Maletela was a phenomenal individual—both personally and professionally. Her mentorship gave me the confidence to present at my first population conference, a moment that shaped my journey. She constantly encouraged me to share my knowledge and to engage openly and confidently in any space. Her unwavering support and willingness to recommend me for opportunities will never be forgotten. Her willingness to lend a hand always amazed me. Her expertise outstanding. Her warmth astounding. Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched. Shine on daughter of Lesotho and the world!

I remember meeting Maletela for the first time while on mission together in Abuja in April 2024 and feeling what a gift it was to have met her, Maletela's larger-than-life spirit touched many lives including mine. Effervescent, energetic, warm and absolutely astute in her craft. I remember how we shared musings on life and staying true to oneself in midst of the chaos of the airport in Addis while returning back, and it is a conversation I have reflected on often after. Dear beautiful Maletela, you will be missed. I am reminded of poetic words of Henry Holland that give me solace - "I have only slipped away to the next room. I am I and you are you. Whatever we were to each other, that, we still are". Rest in Peace. Blessings to your beautiful children.

Maletela, a beautiful, talented and kind woman.
Just 4 months ago we were in Kigali and abuja together working on getting your passion - CRVS into our new operation. All the stakeholders we met loved you.
Can still see your smile…. Keep smiling dear. Going to miss you
Rest in Peace

I am deeply saddened and shocked to hear this unfortunate news.
Maletela will be greatly missed.
She always exuded happiness and positivity. Even during challenging times and high stress, she maintained a pleasant demeanor and sense of humor that uplifted everyone around her.
Her optimism was truly inspiring. We collaborated on a complex project that required both technical expertise and effective communication with various stakeholders. She remained persistent and ensured I did not give up either.
Her absence will be profoundly felt...

To Maletela's family, my deepest condolence for her passing away. Like many, I've been touched by her professionalism, warmth, and thoughtfulness. She's such a humble, kind and gentle soul. We worked together on Rwanda for a few years and I witnessed her outstanding work that led to a major CRVS reform which created a long lasting impact. She did it quietly yet so effectively. All along she developed wonderful relations with many government and Bank colleagues. I will miss you deeply and remember your legacy on the importance of being kind, humble, gentle, and caring to all, while juggling with our busy work. This is the way you'll be remembered by many of us.

The news was heartbreaking; it was an incredible loss, and up until now I'm not sure I could find the right words and way to come to terms with this reality that Maletela is no longer with us.
She was one of the most genuine people I've ever had the honor to work with. She was extremely friendly and helpful, her passion for her work was palpable, and she always had a way to bring up the mood of whatever room she found herself in. Her laughs were infectious, and the ways she treated people around her were beyond commendable. What a ray of sunshine, she was!
Sending love and heartfelt condolences from Cambodia...May her soul rest in peace...

TO MALETELA - A VERY PLEASANT LADY
Oh, my dear Maletela, I am very reluctant to write. I am struggling with myself to accept the reality because I don’t want you to go!! You have been part of me and my family for 20 years plus. Despite the huge age gap between us, our friendship blossomed beyond academic, professional, and career, to a loving relationship that spread among our families and friends and international borders.
I thank God for bringing us into each other’s lives - we used to joke that you are a Ghanaian and I am a “Lesothian”. My home is full of Basotho items including the Big Safety Pin for the Blanket. We have shared so much together – the joys, fears, and sadness; celebrated all kinds of get-togethers; cried, danced, and prayed together; cracked jokes and nicknamed; disagreed about driving speed limits; eaten Nandos with extra hot extra sauce; twice our first names and surnames were mistakenly switched; we were even diagnosed with the same disease!!! Oh, Maletela there is still so much to talk about and do.
Yes, you were very sick; not long ago you phoned, and we were busy talking about treatment and survival and a summer visit. This turn of events is very devastating to all. Since Tuesday my mind has been overwhelmed with all kinds of memories that we have shared and gone through.
I do remember the first time I met you at the UAPS conference in December 1999 in Durban and the last time we parted in front of Checkers shop at Menlyn Park Mall, Pretoria after the Coffee Time with Ntsiki and Lerato on 31 Dec 2024. Between these periods is filled with a lovely history of Suuuzy and Maleteeela Friendship.
Ntsepase and Matete, yes no one can replace Mama but as your tears flow, please don’t lose heart. Mama has left you a strong loving family plus many relatives and friends who are willing to support you 24/7. To my Basotho family, your pain is my pain. Grandma, Maletela has physically left the circle, but you have built a very strong loving, family; and your son and daughters and their families will continue to love you and one another. So may all of you be comforted.
Interestingly, Easter is around the corner when we celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord. May all of us take Comfort and Peace in Jesus’ own words in John 3:25. “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in Me will live even after dying”.
Farewell Maletela my beloved Friend. You are forever in our minds and hearts.
Susie and Family

To: Tuoane’s family and friends
We are with broken hearts mourning the passing of our sister and a friend, Ausy Maletela Tuoane, true daughter of the Land (wherever she was, she would always refer to her heritage, Morali oa Mosotho!) The loss of a legend such as Maletela is irreplaceable; she has left behind a vacuum in our hearts, and particularly in the CRVS community, and the many people she impacted throughout Lesotho, Africa and abroad.
Maletela was no mere colleague/friend; she was a shining example of dedication, wisdom and kindness. What an inspiring impact she had in her quest to strengthen civil registration systems and ensure that every life was counted across the continent and the globe.
Apart from her professional genius, Maletela, or Khaitseli, as we have affectionately come to call one another, was a dear friend who lifted every space she occupied with her warmth, humour and steadfast love.
While we grieve this devastating loss, we also celebrate a life lived well with purpose and impact. May we continue her mission with the same commitment and compassion she showed up with every day, in her honour.
Our hearts are heavy with her loss, and we send our deepest condolences to her family, loved ones and all who are mourning. You had a special moment shared, and I hope that gave you strength. Knowing how much ‘Khaitseli’ was loved and admired will give you solace.
May your soul rest in peace, my beloved friend. Your legacy will endure.

I’m at a loss for words. I still can’t believe she’s gone. Maletela, my dearest friend and sister—you left us far too soon.
I first met her in Tanzania in 2016, and from that moment, our journey together was truly special. Maletela, Chiho, and I were like three corners of the same triangle—always connected, always there for each other.
Her smile and laughter were infectious.
Very few could match her dedication, integrity, or strength when it came to work. She set the bar high, and she did it with grace.
Maletela, you will be deeply missed. Rest in peace, my friend, until we meet again.
Ntsepase and Matete—sending you all my love, hugs, and prayers. Lean on each other, not just as siblings but in your role as parents, too.
You’re not alone—we’re here for you, now and always.

Still trying to grasp the news of your sudden departure, dear colleague and Auntie Maletela.
I’ll never forget our first time meeting in DC during the Results & Learning Workstream Retreat—how we instantly connected over our short hair and shared love for beautiful clothes. I remember feeling overwhelmed in that space, but you, in your gentle way, made me feel at ease, like you always did. We laughed about life, talked about your kids, and about the things we loved about our home countries.
I truly enjoyed every moment of working with you, especially on all those webinars we created together.
Thank you for your kindness, your warmth, your light. You’ve left behind a beautiful legacy, and your name will continue to be spoken with love for generations. I’m grateful to have known you. Sending all my love and blessings to your family and children.

Dearest Matete, Ntsepase
I am so sorry for your lost. It all happened so fast, and I am sure that you are still in shock and disbelief. Your mother was a wonderful woman and will leave a big gap. Many of us will miss her dearly. I’ll forever cherish all the memories that I have had with her. Ntsepase, our outing in Rwanda last year, is still fresh in memory, and I am happy to have had the opportunity to meet you.
Please also feel free to reach out to me if you are coming to Europe. You are always welcome to come and stay with us.
May her soul rest in peace.

It’s hard to put into words the kind of light Maletela brought into the world—and into the lives of everyone lucky enough to know her. She was a rare soul: full of grace, wit, and a kind of sunny defiance that made you believe anything was possible.
Her work—making sure every birth and every death was counted—spoke to her deep belief in the value of every human life. But it was the way she lived that left the most lasting impact: with laughter, mischief, compassion, and a strength that was as quiet as it was unshakable. Her door was always open, and so was her heart.
I’ll always remember our happy hours together—those times felt like a little pocket of freedom, where all the weight lifted off our shoulders. We laughed, we looked ahead, we shared dreams without hesitation. Being with her was like getting a glimpse of the world as it could be—lighter, kinder, more joyful.
Even in the face of illness, she never let it define her. She showed us how to live fully, joyfully, and with purpose. Her positivity wasn’t performative—it was powerful, rooted in something deep and real.
Maletela was a beacon. And though I miss her more than words can say, her light is still with me—with us.
With love and so much gratitude for her life,

It is profoundly sorrowful to lose such a gentle and humble soul as Maletela. She effortlessly formed friendships with everyone she encountered, thanks to her joyful and engaging personality. During one of her numerous missions to Rwanda, she and her fellow team members visited my home. Instantly, Maletela connected with my children, who were just 4 and 9 years old, and they swiftly became friends. Her passion for CRVS was evident, and Rwanda achieved significant progress in this area due to her dedication, professional advice, and unwavering support. She will be greatly missed. May her soul rest in peace.

Maletela was such a gentle soul. Aside of her great professional attributes and soundness, she was a person who genuinely really cared about others, about her work, and about her mission in life. I am her Social Protection colleague and we worked together in Rwanda. I am a direct witness of her immense human qualities, the support she was always willing to provide, even beyond what was expected from her. I will always treasure our conversations, her guidance and the encouraging words she once told me. I am sure that same as me, she touched the lives of so many others: colleagues, family and friends, but also the people she devoted her work to.
Bon voyage, dear Maletela, from your Peruvian friend. You'll be missed and always remembered...

Maletela was already part of the GFF team when I joined some 6 years ago. Her calm, kind and thoughtful presence was so welcoming and she seemed to embody all the values that the GFF strives to uphold. She was so humble, yet also exceptionally knowledgeable and experienced, working across so many countries and with many different teams with such grace and apparent ease. She is a true inspiration to all of us and will always be part of the GFF’s DNA.

Eternal rest to his gentle soul. Good bye.

"For everything there is a season, and a time for every activity under heaven" is found in Ecclesiastes 3:1
There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. What do workers gain from their toil? I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.
It was hard to understand that she is gone at young age and miles away, but i know Mme Matuoane, her mother's comfort prayers every time i visited the home and we would speak of her and hope that God can heal their or our wound even in this hour.

In 2016, just after finishing Matric, I was searching for schools in Gauteng. Part of the process required me to obtain a police clearance from Pretoria. At the time, I knew no one in Pretoria, but my mother quickly connected me with her friend’s sister, Mme Maletela, who lived there. “She’ll take you in for a night and help you,” my mom said. I had never set foot in Pretoria before, so the thought of a new city and being taken in by strangers made me both nervous and excited.
When I arrived at the rank just before sunset, I received a phone call from Mme Maletela, telling me where to stand so she could find me easily. Moments later, a beautiful car pulled up, and I paid it no mind, thinking, “Surely, that’s not my ride.” But then I heard her calling my name. I was in awe — not just of the car, but of the incredible woman who stepped out to greet me. Warm, full of life, curious, and deeply kind; she welcomed me like family.
On the drive to her home, we spoke about my dreams, my studies, and the future. She listened intently and offered thoughtful advice that stayed with me long after. When we arrived, I was stunned. The house, the neighborhood, everything was like something out of a movie. Having spent the last five years in a township in Mpumalanga, this was a world I had only seen on television. That night, sitting at a family dinner table, surrounded by warmth and kindness, I felt something shift inside me.
Mme Maletela taught me a lesson that day; one that changed the course of my thinking forever. She said, “Sometimes, our dreams are limited by the environment we grow up in. But the more you travel, the more you see, the more you see the possibilities that are available to you.” That truth sank deep into my heart. Her son and I bonded instantly, and despite it being our first meeting, I slept that night in her home with a peace and comfort I hadn’t felt in a long time especially given that I’ve only known them for few hours.
The next morning, she had prepared breakfast and, since she was in a hurry, we took it to her office. Her office was nearly at the top floor of a tall building overlooking the entire city of Pretoria. I’ll never forget that view, that feeling of elevation; both literal and spiritual. It felt like I was in a dream, and she made it all possible. In those two days, she planted something in me: belief, vision, and the knowledge that I was capable of much more than I had ever imagined.
Before we parted ways, she said something I’ve carried with me ever since: “Work hard at university. Everything you want in life, you have to earn. It won’t come easy, but don’t forget to enjoy the journey , have fun. Your mental health matters too.”
To this day, I remember her kindness, her grace, and her wisdom. She changed my life in ways I’m still discovering. It breaks my heart to hear of her passing. I wish I had the chance to say thank you, one more time.
To her family and all who loved her, please accept my deepest condolences. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Mme Maletela was a light, and I will never forget her.

My prayers and condolences to the family. Maletela fought a good fight, kept the faith, believed and gave it her all, for the sake of her children, mom and the family at large. God chose to take her home to rest, and we accept His will, and have faith that God will watch over her family and strengthen them. They will never lack and He will be their provider and source of strength. Praying for you. Maletela my big sister, I will miss you, our chats at personal level, your commitment to CRVS and health system strengthening, and collaboration at work. Go well sis, till we meet again

It’s still unbelievable that you are gone. Our paths crossed so many times. As my senior in high school and NUL, as colleagues at NUL, and later in Pretoria. Your smile was always broad and warm. May your soul rest in peace. Deepest condolences to the family and friends.

Like for so many others, Maletela touched me with her kindness and joyful spirit—even despite not having had extensive contact with her (especially as I work remotely). When I first joined GFF and was trying to find my bearings, decipher the GFF model, she was one of the colleagues who reached out and offered a hand. She offered both good practical advice as well as calming words. And for some reason, a bit of a random anecdote she shared stayed with me—she mentioned to me that when she was still new to GFF, she was told by someone senior that she should make an effort to speak up more in meetings—that she had a lot of valuable knowledge to share. Her humble character came through in this exchange; but she noted proudly, ‘so now I am speaking up more,’ with the special Maletela twinkle in her eyes that many of us have come to know. As someone that is not innately very outspoken, her story resonated and though it was a small, seemingly inconsequential exchange, I was struck by her authenticity, openness, and kindness. May she rest in peace.
To Ntsepase and Matete, I want to extend my deep and heartfelt empathy in what must be an overwhelmingly sorrowful moment. I also lost my mother to cancer when I was young (15) and recall that sensation so vividly. I recall wishing that she would show up in a dream, I missed her so. While no two experiences of the death of a loved one are the same, I wanted to share that for me what helped was eventually realizing (and feeling) that she would be in my heart for ever, and nothing could take that away; that I could keep her memory alive in my heart and that she would continue to motivate and inspire me throughout the rest of my life. I wish for you that you find your own way to keep her close and alive.

My heartfelt condolences to Maletela’s family, friends, and colleagues. She will be remembered for her dedication to CRVS, especially for her significant contributions during the modernization of CRVS in Rwanda through GFF. Her insightful perspectives on data quality, her willingness to share ideas and experiences from various countries, and her steadfast support made her a true advocate for CRVS across the continent. May her beautiful soul rest in eternal peace!

It’s so hard to believe that Maletela is gone. She wasn’t just a colleague, she was a true friend. Someone who brought warmth, joy, and light into every space she walked into.
I’ll always remember how she used to come to me for help with her French. She was so determined to learn and improve, and we’d spend time practicing together, always with smiles, patience, and laughter. It was such a simple thing, but it meant a lot to both of us.
And every time she went back to Rwanda, she never forgot to bring me tea or coffee. That was just who she was, thoughtful, generous, and always thinking of others.
And of course, I’ll never forget the joy she brought at daugther’s graduation. She danced a beautiful Zulu dance and made the celebration even more special. That moment will stay in my heart forever.
She also left a big mark beyond our friendship. Colleagues from many part of Africa will never forget her dedication, expertise, and support in making the CRVS one of the best systems. She worked with passion and purpose, and it truly made a difference.
She had a way of making people feel loved and appreciated. I’m going to miss her deeply. My heart goes out to her family and to everyone who knew and loved her. She will always be remembered with so much love.
Rest peacefully, my dear friend.

One of the most dedicated, talented, fun-loving, sincere, special people that I've ever known. Utterly humble and so thoughtful and kind. After a jam-packed mission, I remember watching you shop for winter coats for your two beloved children on the streets of Hanoi, picking out the perfect style and color from among the hundreds for purchase. The shopkeeper was so pleased at making an excellent sale to such a lovely customer that he threw in a whole stack of baseball caps as a thank you. You touched so many lives Maletela, and mine was definitely one of them.

It’s still hard to believe that Maletela is no longer with us. She was not just a colleague from HQ—she was a radiant presence who always brought a smile to my face, no matter what the topic was. Working with her was a true joy. She had this special way of making even the most serious work feel lighter, simply by being herself—warm, kind, and full of life.
I will always cherish the memories of the time she visited Zambia. Sharing my country with her, and seeing her embrace the experience with such enthusiasm, is something I’ll never forget. The photos from that time bring back so much joy—they remind me of her laughter, her curiosity, and her generous spirit.
Maletela, you touched so many lives, and your legacy of kindness, warmth, and professionalism will live on in each of us. You are deeply missed

Que tristeza causou a sua partida irmã. Lembro-me de si sempre com um sorriso, bem disposta, embora sempre muito atarefada. Que Deus a receba na sua infinita glória. Descanse em paz, mana.

I met Maletela soon after she started working at Stats SA. It is such sad news to hear that she has passed - she was such a warm person who walked the extra mile. She was a delight to work with and will be sorely missed. Condolences to her children and family.

I met Maletela in the early 2000s while she was still at the National Population Unit at the Department of Social Development. Later on she came to Stats SA where I got to know her much better. She was the first person to call me Ntate Diego and I asked what I should call her back, so I learned to call her Mme Maletela. Maletela was always kind and generous in sharing her infinite demographic wisdom and even when she moved to the World Bank and was a leading light to many of us in South Africa, her humility remained. She has inspired many a Southern African demographer in her time.
Mme Maletela, may you rest in eternal peace 🙏
