A "Madeleine moment" refers to a sudden, vivid, and involuntary memory triggered by a sensory experience..... We want you to share your Madeleine Moments about our favourite Madeleine! Please use this as a space to upload photos and memories of our beloved Maddy.

A life well loved

We are devastated to lose dear Madeleine, she was the light of our family and had a deep love for life and everyone in it. She was never one for tradition or stuffiness and wants to be celebrated in her passing so whilst there will be tears and sadness at her loss, we want to celebrate the happy moments and all of the fun we have had over the years. She was a great Great Aunt with an old circle of friends and cared deeply for those around her. She loved travelling - we've calculated 39 countries and spent a lot of happy moments in Bella Italia with an aperitivo in medieval Ligurian Borghi by the sea. As much as she loved travelling and good food and prosecco, she spent a lot of time dedicated to cultivating positive community around her - as chair of numerous governing bodies for schools and at the West Barnes library.
Those that know her well will recognise a stubborn and impatient streak - a need to always be right, to win at tricky quizzes and crazy golf and to take short cuts that aren't actually short cuts rather than sit in traffic..... And we know how much she absolutely hated Manchester United.

We will miss her immensely, she leaves a hole in our lives but we know she is cherished and our memories of a life well lived and loved will last.

The post-kids era of luxury travel begins with trip to Japan ⛩️
Madeleine loved travel and this was one of a number of trips across the world which she enjoyed immensely - throwing herself into the culture and bringing back lots of stories. Trips to Hong Kong, China, South Africa, Brazil, Argentina, Istanbul, Peru and across 20 states in the US followed!

(Almost) going for European glory with Fulham ⚽
The 2009/10 season was arguably the greatest in Fulham’s history as Roy Hodgson’s side defied all the odds to reach the Final of the inaugural UEFA Europa League. Madeleine was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in this year and overcame it successfully but an extensive recovery period did not stop her from travelling to the final vs Atletico Madrid by coach to Hamburg. Fulham lost 2-1 after extra time but it was an incredible day out for the fans.

Olympics come to London!
The Olympics coming to London was Madeleine's dream and she and Paul made the absolute most of it! She loved every second - culminating in a lifetime high of Super Saturday - Jessica Ennis Hill, Mo Farah, GB golds galore 🥇

Jazzy Jury!
Madeleine's law degree came in handy when she was called up for Jury service - which she found fascinating. She kept the secrets of the fraud and deception trial for 6 weeks but made some solid friends with her fellow Jurors. In a slightly weird twist, they went on the Crystal Maze together and Madeleine solved puzzles to win a trip to the London aquarium.... 💎

Enjoying retirement with Paul
Paul retired in 2018 and many holidays, meals with friends and theatre shows were enjoyed in this year. Most notably, Madeleine and family went to Osteria Francescana, the best restaurant in the world and had an incredible meal with family.

"Lego, Jigsaws and self-haircuts"
Madeleine didn't love lockdown... She missed being out and seeing family but made the most of it with plenty of jigsaws, home cooked food and sneaking a glass of prosecco on the driveway with socially distanced visitors. She was a keen weekly quiz master and made sure to keep kids entertained with gifts and practical parcels.

Maddy the Speed Demon 🏎️
The attendants working at the Ferrari racing track probably weren't expecting this 68 yr old woman to be quite the speed enthusiast! But she showed them wrong and had the best day out driving 6 Ferraris around the track. The results were in that she was in the top 5% of times... Fearless!

Turning 70 in style
Madeleine loved a party with close friends and family and we went all out for her 70th - a bespoke Maddy Spritz cocktail (Limoncello, basil, prosecco spritz), her favourite pizza with prosciutto di Parma, ska and two-tone on the DJ decks and surrounded by good friends and family. It was a great night for a great woman.

Family time
Despite Madeleine's illness throughout 2025, she still enjoyed family trip to Centre Parcs, a nostalgic throwback to spending time there when the kids were young. She was competitive with Crazy Golf as always and had a lovely time doing quizzes and challenges the whole weekend. She enjoyed walks in Bushey Park with Paul and spending time with family - always the most important thing for her.

Maddy was always full of positivity. When I was in a bad place and embarrassed to see anyone just a hug and a couple of questions from her made me feel like a real person. She always knew how to make me feel seen and supported whilst also gently encouraging me. We will all miss her so much.

Madeleine was our favourite auntie. Small in stature but massive in every other way. Loving, generous, supportive, a true matriarch.
Imaging life without her is hard. Back in 1981 she encouraged us to spend our first night alone to the chagrin of her sister Maureen. Forever in our hearts.

Sometime in 2012 I received a flyer through the letter box outlining that West Barnes Library was due to close on Mondays and was inviting volunteers to help out. I went along to find out what it was all about, and this was when I first met Madeleine who was also interested in helping. This was the start of what has been a long friendship with Madeleine throughout our joint endeavours as members of the West Barnes Library Volunteers and committee members organising events such as Madeleine and Paul’s amazing Quiz Nights, Bingo with a Difference, photography competitions, Summer and Autumn Fairs and Children’s activities. Madeleine was also instrumental in setting up the Friends website. Her contribution and friendship will be sorely missed.

Maddy was the greatest of Great Aunts and we will miss her so much. We have so many good memories of extremely chaotic but incredibly fun events hosted at the Maguires’. Madeleine created the most amazing quizzes and activities - one key memory of ours is running around New Malden searching for clues in a gigantic Easter egg hunt. She was enormously generous and we were always so spoilt - we have never since left an Easter egg hunt with a boot full of chocolate… the best Easter bunny ever! We both really looked up to her. She was so inspiring and always wanted the best for everyone around her - she even got us our first bout of work experience, waitressing at the legendary Maguire parties! Madeleine was always family focused, keeping us all together, even during lockdown with her virtual quizzes. Forever loved ❤️

Lots of amazing memories growing up of christmases or Easter all together but my most recent memories of Mad are of her with my kids. Last big family quiz giving Cooper his first ever play dough when it was suppose to be part of the quiz and not as a toy. Then the most recent one last month where we watched him hunt through Matt’s old toys bringing back memories for Mad and Paul of their kids and starting new ones with Cooper - obsessed with the modular cars. That day she also made Marley smile a lot.

Madeleine was one of our oldest friends.
We met in 1981 when Paul and Seán joined Exxon and we both lived at Squirrels Court in Worcester Park. We went to the US at similar times and enjoyed many happy occasions there as well as Lindsay's early childhood.
Our friendship continued ever since with regular get-togethers and especially at Christmas time when the Maguires kept open house for the McGettricks. One of the highlights was a holiday we shared in their holiday home in Italy, with many shared meals and drinks on the balcony looking down the valley to the Mediterranean.
Arrivederchi Madeleine! We will always remember your friendship and our happy times together.

Mads was such an amazing woman.

Some of my most treasured childhood memories revolve around her, and I truly believe she helped shape me into the person I am today. My love for theatre — taking me to shows like Tintin and Legally Blonde when I growing up. I grew up hating sport, but we would go round to watch FA Cup finals. I knew she was proud of me, especially when I started my career, and I’ll never forget that.

She created the most incredible Easter egg hunts and quizzes, absolute chaos as we tried to work out what was going on🤣 and she spoiled all of us endlessly 🫶🏽. She was so loving, so giving, and so welcoming to everyone. She always brought the whole family together.

Christmas will always hold a special place in my heart. For as long as I can remember, we spent Christmas together — something we always looked forward to and cherished.

She also had no problem telling me off when I probably needed it 🤣.

She will be missed more than words can say, but I am so incredibly lucky to have had her in my life ❤️

A light has gone out in Motspur Park. I know no words can ease the pain. Madeleine was such a special person who brought warmth and light to everything she touched.

My mum admired Madeleine's capacity to deal with everything in her "no fuss" way and felt blessed to have her as a neighbour. Madeleine never complained about the impossible card she was dealt .. quite the opposite she threw herself into helping all those around her. We'' remember Madeleine for the warmth and cheerful person she always was. With our love Sharon and Jane.

We remember Madeleine's great spirit, energy and occasionally caustic wit and could only stand back and admire her panache and style when hosting her famous quiz nights at West barnes Library, She was full of common sense and pragmatic reason when it came to planning events. She will be greatly missed.

Well how lucky was I to have Madeleine as an Auntie…..I really hit the jackpot, she was fun, warm, loving & an amazing role model.❤️
Just a couple of many, many memories…..
I’m convinced that she was solely responsible for the introduction of Prosecco to the uk. Before you could buy it in here, there was always a plentiful supply of Madeleine’s “special Italian wine” at any family event, she weaned us all onto it with great effect🍾
Secondly, to this day, if I mention Madeleine to any of my friends, they always say “oh she’s the incredible, dancing Auntie”. She gained that title at my wedding over 30 years ago
& they still remember her energy, warmth and passion(!) on the dance floor….they were all truly jealous that I had such a cool Aunt 🕺

I'm so lucky to have had Madeleine as a mother-in-law. She was so kind and generous, and gave me such a warm welcome into the family. Even when I'd only been going out with Matthew for about a week, she invited me to come on holiday with them to Italy. I have such fond memories of her bombing along the Ligurian coast in a Fiat 500 and insisting on going for a 'passeggiata' after dinner before gelato. She always had some very strong opinions on Italian bureaucracy as well...

Madeleine was such a presence at family gatherings and will be missed so, so much. She was a truly special person ❤️

Great friends for 53 years. From the early days when Maddy was our Saturday night taxi driver taking the four of us on tour around the countryside pubs of Coventry. Loads of great times, lovely holidays and treasured memories. Always a warm welcome whenever we visited, including the day we turned up unannounced at 9.00 on a Saturday morning at the flat in Stafford. She shared her and Paul's breakfast out amongst us❤️
Beautiful memories of a beautiful and courageous friend.

The quiz maestro! I have many happy family memories of arguing about quiz questions and games you had set up. You loved competing and throwing yourself into any game from crazy golf to 1% club and we all knew when you were losing!

Maddy's favourites

RTFQ
At any point when we'd got something incorrect or asked a pointless question - RTFQ
What was Madeleine's favourite car?
Anything she could zip around in! From the early Hilmann Imp which could fit 7 of her friends to her beloved Fiat 500s in a range of colours, mum loved her cars and loved driving. She never complained on long car journeys and was always zipping around side streets.
