Until we meet again my friend, may God hold you in His Hands

Obituary

With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Louis Charles Willard, who was born on September 28th, 1937 and passed away on March 27th, 2026 in The Harbors Senior Community of Fridley.

Charles will be remembered for kindness, generosity, and the quiet ability to bring people together. Family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues all experienced the warmth and sincerity that made time spent with Charles meaningful.

Throughout life, Charles built lasting connections and touched many lives through simple acts of care, encouragement, and friendship. Conversations, shared moments, and everyday gestures created memories that will remain with those who had the privilege of knowing Charles.

He served as director of the theological libraries at Princeton and Harvard, then became part of the staff of the Association of Theological Schools, the accrediting agency that set standards for theological libraries. He had a keen mind and a sharp, quirky wit that wasn't always appreciated, but he was dedicated to theological education and always ready to support and advise fellow members of the field. In his retirement he developed a stimulating lectionary call-in podcast that studied the Bible passages for the week.

Family meant a great deal to Charles, and relationships were always nurtured with patience and devotion. Friends valued loyalty and sincerity, while colleagues appreciated dedication and a thoughtful approach to work and collaboration.

The passing of Charles leaves a space that cannot be filled. Yet the memories, lessons, and moments shared will continue to live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know Charles.

Charles will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

I knew Dr. Willard from First Presbyterian Church of Brandon, FL. He was a very valuable member of the Everyday Christianity class. Each Sunday, I looked forward to his wisdom on a variety of topics. He will be missed.

I only knew Charles Willard in the context of ATS accrediting, and in that work, I experienced him as a character to behold! He was a team player with a keen eye for making theological schools better. Charles offered his critiques with astute wisdom and his affirmations with generosity and care. Hats off to a good and faithful servant of the Lord-- Charles, I am grateful to have met you along the way.
Rest in Peace -- you are missed!

One of my favorite memories of growing up with my Dad was Christmas. There were a number of years where he hid my presents all around the house and there was only a pile of hint cards under the tree. Then, one year, I insisted on having all my presents under the tree. So, that Christmas morning I ran down the stairs, expecting everything under the tree, like I asked, and there was nothing. No presents, no hint cards, Nothing! Naturally, I ran back up to my parent's room and asked my Dad where my presents were. He asked me where I asked them to be. "Under the tree," I said. "Ah," he said with a smile, "You never said which tree." Then I ran outside, in my pajamas, and checked under every tree. Nothing! By the time I came back in the house, cold and frustrated, there were all the presents under the tree, just like I asked. It was like they'd been there the whole time and I just hadn't looked hard enough the first time.
