Obituary
Larry O. Thiel Sr., a beloved father, grandfather, and a giant in the world of golf, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2024. Born on January 9, 1943, in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, Larry lived a life defined by hard work, dedication, and a profound love for his family and community. He graduated from Chippewa Falls McDonnell High School in 1961, and from there, embarked on a remarkable journey.
As the tournament director for some of golf’s most iconic events, including the Jackie Gleason Inverrary Classic in Florida, Jack Nicklaus’ Memorial Tournament in Ohio, the Skins Game, and the International Golf Tournament at Castle Pines in Colorado, Larry made a lasting impact on the sport. His 21-year leadership at the International Golf Tournament saw him bring Tiger Woods to the event in 1998 and 1999, attracting record-breaking crowds. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Larry was named the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame Person of the Year in 1999.
Larry’s contributions didn’t end with the International. After his tenure there, he played a pivotal role in launching seven additional tournaments across Asia and Europe. Even in retirement, Larry’s passion for the game never waned. He came out of retirement to reimagine and revitalize the iconic Bob Hope Classic, now known as The American Express Golf Challenge, leaving his mark once again on the world of golf.
While Larry’s accomplishments in the golf world were widely celebrated, his quiet philanthropic work was equally meaningful. Growing up as the second son of Depression-era parents, Larry never forgot his roots. He devoted his time and resources to causes close to his heart, particularly those addressing food insecurity and supporting the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Denver. His giving spirit and humble nature ensured that his contributions were often downplayed, and their impact was undeniable.
In 2019, Larry faced an acute episode of a rare autoimmune disorder that affected his mobility and independence. Although this challenge kept him from the home he cherished and the many relationships he had cultivated, it never diminished his love for life or the deep friendships he treasured.
Larry is survived by the mother of his children, Freda, his daughter, Laura, and his son, Larry Jr. ("Skip"). In the past decade, Larry found his greatest joy in spending time with Skip, his wife Hailey, and their children. As a devoted grandfather, Larry cherished his time with Annabelle (10) and his namesake, Larry O. Thiel III, affectionately known as “Trip” (7). To Annabelle and Trip, he was more than just “Grandpa”—he was their rock, their storyteller, and their biggest supporter. The bond they shared, filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories, will forever unite them.
Larry Thiel Sr.’s legacy is not only defined by his remarkable career in golf or his charitable work but also by the deep, lasting relationships he built with family, friends, and the community. He will be deeply missed, and his impact will be felt for generations to come.
The Thiel family would like to express their profound gratitude to the exceptional medical team at Littleton Adventist Hospital. The unwavering care and compassion they provided during Larry’s final days made an immeasurable impact. Their expertise was accompanied by a genuine kindness and concern for both Larry and his family, offering comfort and support in every moment. The compassion they showed will forever be etched in the hearts of those who witnessed it, and the family will always remember the extraordinary care that helped ease this challenging journey.
Celebration of Life
Larry will be laid to rest on sacred ground in a private ceremony. A Celebration of Life will be hosted at Columbine Country Club on Friday, October 25th, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. All who knew Larry are very welcome. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Denver.

Memories
Incredibly ironic, Skip and my son Andrew Egan are doing real estate business together. Larry would be so pleased.
Larry always talked about his family not himself. I loved hearing stories about Skips growing family. For all his accomplishments, he was most proud of being a father and grandfather.
An Irish Blessing in your honor Larry:
'You do not die, if you live in the hearts of the loved ones you leave
behind."
God Bless Larry and the Thiel Family
Never forget you my friend.
