Julie Ann Buchanan passed away surrounded by the deepest love of her life: her four children and her devoted daughter-in-law.
While people often say someone was "one of a kind," for Julie, it is the simple, unvarnished truth. She was fiercely determined, brilliantly smart, and vibrantly alive—a towering, unmistakable presence in every room she walked into. She lived large, loved big, and possessed an endless appetite for the best things human life has to offer: film, theater, music, food, sports, cards (poker and bridge especially), games, and above all else, her family.

Born and raised in San Diego, Julie’s roots ran deep into the soil of her beloved hometown. Her maternal grandparents (Loperena) emigrated from the Basque country of Spain in the early 1900s, joining her paternal grandparents, who settled in San Diego around the same time with deep Scottish heritage.

After graduating from Rosary High School, Julie attended San Diego State University. In an era when women received little to no encouragement to pursue higher education or professional careers, Julie refused to let external limits define her horizon. Where others saw roadblocks, she saw a path waiting to be cleared. Single-handedly, she carved out her own destiny.

When she retired in 2020 after a distinguished career as a financial planner, Julie put her professional journey into her own words—a remarkable history that paints a vivid picture of what it meant to break ground at a time when women simply weren't allowed through the door:

"My journey in the world of Finance began at age 37 as a woman who had reached her ceiling at AT&T/Pac Bell and Direct Marketing companies, and who yearned for more as a single mother of four young children. There were no women brokers at Merrill Lynch in San Diego. However, this was not intimidating to me since I had been the first woman promoted by court order to an 'all-male position' at AT&T/Pac Bell.

I was hired in 1979 along with two gentlemen. Before being hired, I was sent to a 'simulation test' in Los Angeles—a two-hour, grueling experience requiring intense multitasking. Some men even walked out mid-test. I finished in the number one spot. (The other two new hires were never required to take it).

My first day at Merrill was thrilling—to this day I remember the feeling of being close to this mysterious world of finance. On my second day, a male colleague walked up to my cubicle to let me know the office had started a pool on the odds of me failing the Series 7 exam. He said other women had tried but couldn't pass.

In 1997, I was promoted to resident manager of the Hemet office, becoming the first woman of any major financial firm in Southern California to serve in a management position. From Hemet, I was promoted to manage the La Mesa office. While changing locations was difficult for building my client base, proving that a woman could succeed in this role was paramount to me. Soon, more women managers were promoted, and I was free to return to my true passion: serving my clients.

I returned to the Indian Wells office and ultimately relocated home to San Diego in 2007."

Barrier up, barrier down. Hurdle high, jump higher. Her drive to accomplish what others claimed a woman—let alone a single mother of four without a college degree—could never do was astounding. Everyone around her was amazed; Julie was not. She knew all along what she was capable of achieving."

Julie’s convictions extended far beyond the office suite. She was a passionate, active participant in the political landscape, putting her heart, voice, and financial backing behind the causes and candidates she believed in. Never one to sit quietly on the sidelines, Julie actively engaged those around her, challenging family, friends, and colleagues to think critically about their choices, look beyond surface-level arguments, and deeply consider the real-world impact of their representation and vote. She believed civic duty was an active responsibility, not a passive privilege.

Yet, for all her sharp financial acumen and career success, Julie possessed a wonderfully ironic flaw: when it came to the people she loved, she had zero interest in conservation. She gave generously from the heart, pouring her money, resources, and gifts into everyone around her, often entirely at her own expense. She simply could not give enough, and watching others enjoy what she provided brought her the pure, unadulterated joy that no spreadsheet could ever measure.

In these past several years, the final missing piece of Julie’s lifelong journey fell beautifully into place when she moved to The Manor on Bankers Hill active retirement community. It was the rich, vibrant fellowship she had been searching for her entire life, and she embraced it with both hands. Her social calendar was delightfully full as she lived it up to the fullest—teaching bridge, hosting poker games, dining out at local restaurants, taking in plays, and forging deep, soul-nourishing bonds with new friends she felt she had known forever. The Manor gave her a true village, and those golden years were filled with unmatched joy, laughter, and belonging.

Above all her historic professional victories, civic advocacy, and grand spirit, the true centerpiece of Julie's life was her family. She lived, breathed, and fought for them. Her four children and seven beloved grandchildren were her entire universe. They were the heartbeat that kept her holding on far longer than medical science predicted, defying the odds through sheer strength of will.
Having navigated a difficult path early in life, Julie made it her core mission to pass on her strength. She taught every child in her extended family how to persevere, how to weather life’s storms, and how to rise above any obstacle. More than that, she modeled how to live with uncompromising character, intellectual rigor, independent thought, and vast empathy.

Julie leaves behind a legacy of courage, an indelible blueprint for resilience, and a lifetime of precious, larger-than-life memories. Though we will miss her presence deeply, her fierce, loving, and unmistakable spirit will guide and inspire us for the rest of our lives.
