Obituary

Joseph A. Carlin, Jr., 86, of Tempe, Arizona, passed away on 9/15/2024. He was born in Chicago, Illinois and moved to Gary, Indiana as a child, living there until he relocated to Arizona with his own family in 1973.
A long-time Tempe resident and respected banker, Joe managed branches for United Bank, Norwest Bank and Citibank before retiring. Gregarious and personable, quick with a smile and a joke, Joe made friends wherever he went. Although kindhearted and generous, Joe was a ruthless Carlin Coloring Contest judge, pointing out every OOL, NFI and BB on each entry submitted. Joe enjoyed movies, car detailing, landscaping, a good joke and spending time at his satellite office, the Vee Quiva.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years and 4 days, Patricia, daughter Mary (Mark) Cannon, sons Michael (Mary) Carlin, Christopher (Jennifer) Carlin, grandchildren Rebecca (Robert) McCracken, Rachel Cannon, Kate (Danny) Carlin-Flores, Alex Carlin, Jake Carlin, great-granddaughter, Emily McCracken and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Sr. and Marion, brother Randall Carlin, daughter Patti Jo Carlin and granddaughter Abigail Carlin.
A Celebration of Life is being planned. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating boxes of Crayola (Crayola, not RoseArt) crayons to a nearby elementary school.

Dear Pat and Family: Even though I wasn't a member, Joe always made me feel so welcome and special each time I accompanied my mom, Doris Reith to BSLC. I am so grateful to both of you for making my mom always feel special as well. You are beautiful people. I look forward to an announcement of a memorial service for Joe.

Dear Pat, I am sad to learn about Joe. He and you are part of my earliest childhood memories in Gary, and it was so nice to get to know you both again after my folks moved to Arizona. I've been thinking about how easy it was for him to make anyone laugh or smile. Sending you a huge hug and hope to see you in November. XOXO

Joe and I worked together at the Cardinals games. He was the best teammate and friend. I will treasure the laughs we shared and am truly blessed to have known him.

I've cut Joe's hair for thr past 15+ years. Along with his judging of colored pictures, he also gave my haircuts grades as well. I was proud of the few A+'s he handed out. I will miss his bantering and all the stories he shared. My heart goes out to the Carlin family.

Though I only know him through stories from one of his grandchildren, I know what an impact he made. I know he was an incredibly strong and loving (and funny!) grandpa and great grandpa. Sending all of my love to those that he loves so much!
