In Loving Memory of John O'Reilly
As we mark another anniversary of his passing on September 26, 2012, we take a moment to remember John O'Reilly, a man whose warmth and spirit touched so many lives.
John was a devoted husband to his loving wife of 47 years, Mary, and "the best dad in the world" to his children, John, Sue, and Tony; his daughter-in-laws, Eileen and Susan; and his son-in-law, Norman. He was also a cherished "Grandad" to his six adored grandsons, who he likely taught all the best ways to get into trouble.
The stories and memories shared by those who knew him paint a picture of a truly remarkable man. Eileen remembers how he used to pick her up from the hospital on Mondays; she loved the lift but dreaded the inevitable trip to "Knob Hill Farms," where John, flyer in hand, would lead the charge on his weekly bargain hunt. To his colleagues from his years at Sherway Gardens, he was a "Great Guy! Great Boss," a "class act," and a mentor who helped launch careers. To his family, he was the "BFG... the big friendly giant with the giant smile," whose company was always filled with laughter. His passion took the form of being the unofficial president of the Brian Tyrrell fan club, with a dedication that bordered on professional stalking.
He is remembered for his great sense of humor, his love of Football, his kindness, and the mischief that always seemed to be twinkling in his eyes. One tribute beautifully captured a sentiment felt by all: "Many things have been forgotten since you left us, but you will never be one of the forgotten," and that is so true.
The collection of photographs, from his youth in Ireland to his winters in Canada and precious moments with his grandchildren, tells the story of a life rich with family, love, and joy. Each image is a testament to the wonderful man he was.
Though he is dearly missed, the beautiful memories he created continue to bring comfort and smiles to all who were fortunate enough to have known him.
