John LR Sutton Sr
To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.
Obituary
John L R Sutton, Sr. passed away peacefully on January 6th, 2026 at his home in Conroe, Texas.
John leaves behind his beloved wife Nancy with whom he shared 59 years of marriage, a partnership rooted in love, respect, and steadfast commitment. Together they built a family that remained the center of John’s world throughout his life.
He is survived by his sons, John Sutton, Jr. (Debra), and David Sutton. John was a dedicated grandfather to Noah Sutton (Leah), Brian Sutton (Amy), James Sutton, Cole Sutton (Victoria), and Landry Sutton, and a proud great-grandfather to Skye Sutton, Willa Sutton, and Summer Sutton, whose laughter and presence brought him great joy.
John was loving son to both late George Albert Sutton, Jr. and Johanna Sutton and treasured brother to Gary Michael (Joan) Sutton, GeorgeAnn (Kevin) Stumborg, Sandra Lee Sutton and late Keith (Barb) Sutton and extended family, all of whom he cherished deeply.
His life was one defined by devotion—to his family, his country, and the values he lived by every day, including respect being both taught and earned. His accomplishments are too numerous to mention, but a few highlights are achieving Eagle Scout rank, coaching his sons youth baseball teams to a city championship as well as proudly serving his county as a Captain in the United States Army, including distinguished service during the Vietnam Conflict. His military career was marked by leadership, courage, and honor, and he earned numerous medals and commendations in recognition of his service. Though he did not often speak of his sacrifices, his pride in serving his country was evident throughout his life.
Known to those who loved him as a colorful man with a strong presence, John lived life fully and on his own terms. He had many interests and hobbies that reflected his curiosity and independent spirit, and he never lost his appreciation for good conversation, a hearty laugh, or a well-told story. His love for dogs was well known, and they were constant companions who brought him comfort, loyalty, and joy.
Above all else, John loved his family. He was a steady presence, a storyteller, a protector, and a source of wisdom. His influence will live on through generations in the values he passed down—strength, loyalty, service, and love.
John Sutton, Sr. will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever honored by those who were privileged to know and love him.
A Tribute to the Life of John L R Sutton, Sr. will be held at his home on February 7, 2025 from 2pm – 6pm and his final resting place will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to servicedogs.org.

We were not blood at the beginning of John and Nancy’s relationship. By their wedding ceremony, I felt like I had gained a big brother. Throughout our years together we spent many days camping, horseback riding, boating, fishing, and my favorite, playing Scrabble. He was a wiz on the outdoor grill serving up everything from hotdogs to steaks. John had a phobia of snakes and we were always trying to scare him with rubber snakes, sticks that resembled snakes and other pranks. That was until the day an actual water snake made its way to his boat dock. That was the day all of the jokes fell aside and he faced his fear to protect all of us.
John was extremely intelligent and fiercely patriotic to our country which he served with pride during the Vietnam Conflict.
We were often on opposite sides of the political spectrum. However, we were always able to have lively discourse about our positions. He respected me and I respected him.
He was a successful businessman who owned a few of his own companies.
John loved my mom and dad as though they were his biological parents. He absolutely loved his family, the boys and my big sister, Nancy. His grandchildren and great grandchildren gave him so much joy and delighted his life.
I will miss him in so many different ways because his presence was so magnetic to any gathering , small and large.
Rest in peace my dear, caring, loving and humorous brother ( in-law)
I will always keep your heart in my heart.
Love always, Marian Barry Chilton
