In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.
Obituary
LJoel McRae, a devoted father, Army veteran, and lifelong automotive enthusiast, passed away on November 22, 2025, in Augusta, Georgia. He was 72 years old. Born on January 30, 1953, in Augusta, Georgia, Joel's journey was one of service and craftsmanship. After serving honorably in the United States Army, he made his home in Augusta, where his hands would shape not just cars but a legacy of skill and perseverance. In the early 1980s, Joel brought his dream to life by founding his own paint and body shop in Augusta. More than a business, it was an extension of his soul—where metal met artistry under his steady hand. Known for its meticulous workmanship and integrity, the shop became a place where vehicles were reborn and pride was poured into every layer of paint. Joel’s passion for the automotive world was boundless. His love for paintwork wasn't merely an occupation—it was the rhythm of his days and the spark that fueled his spirit. His enthusiasm echoed through engine bays and workshop walls, inspiring all who crossed his path. He is lovingly remembered by his children: son Joel B. McRae Jr., daughter Jovon D. McRae-Buchanan, and daughter Vanessa Hollimand. In them lives the strength and tenacity that defined their father’s life. Joel held dear the memory of his mother, Dorothy McRae, and his grandson Joel Robinson McRae, who preceded him in death. Their presence remained with him always. May Joel McRae’s memory bring comfort to those who knew him—a man whose life was driven by purpose and painted with passion.

Memory wall
I remember you teaching me spades and chess, with no one else to play against, so I could practice until I was ready to beat you the next time. I was always waiting for that next time. I remember the day you introduced me to my sister Vanessa. I remember how, whenever I was expecting a child, I never had to say a word—you would somehow find your way to me in South Carolina.
To me, you are a mythical being: larger than the universe, smoother than still water, and as determined as the sun. It is hard even to say “I miss you,” because our time apart was so long that I grew accustomed to carrying you in my heart. But now you are free, no longer bound by the obligations of life.
I’ll give you a moment to enjoy your new setting, but I know that sooner or later I will feel your presence again—hear your voice guiding me, warning me, and reminding me to whom I belong.
Thank you, simply, for being.
