Memories are the treasures that time cannot steal.
Obituary
It is with a heavy heart that we share that on Sunday, February 22, 2026, Joan Marie Christovale passed away.
Born and raised in Oakland, California, alongside her five siblings, Joan grew up as the second eldest — a role that shaped her sense of responsibility early on. She swam, played volleyball, and carried a quiet determination even in her youth. She married young and welcomed two children, a son and a daughter. Later, she settled in Torrance, California, where she remarried and built the life she would remain rooted in for decades.
After the passing of her husband, Joan devoted her time more deeply to two things that defined her: crafting and education. She spent over 40 years as an educator, shaping the lives of generations of students. Teaching was not simply a profession — it was stitched into who she was. The impact of those decades in the classroom lives on quietly in countless families.
If you knew her, you knew turtles. Not casually — everywhere. Graphic tees. Earrings. Charms hanging from hooks. Tucked into her car. Scattered across desks and shelves. If something could hold a turtle, it did. It wasn’t décor. It was part of her.
Her hands were rarely still. Crochet hooks, knitting needles, sewing machines — fabric and yarn constantly in motion. Crafting groups, sewing circles, quilting friends — she built community through creation. Making things was how she moved through the world.
And then there were her teams: the 49ers and the Warriors. Not a casual fan — a devoted one. Paraphernalia, shirts, strong opinions. Games were events. The Warriors in particular were sacred time. If they were playing, she was watching.
Stubborn. Strong-willed. Living by her own internal rulebook. In many ways, it feels fitting that she left on her own terms.
She is survived by her brothers and sisters, her daughter, her granddaughter, and a host of extended family and friends. In honoring her wishes, she was cremated through Natural Grace Mortuary, and there will be no formal service.
