Obituary

Jimmy Yang
1948 - 2024

Jimmy Yang passed away peacefully on December 25, 2024. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, father-in-law, mentor, and friend who touched countless lives with his generous spirit and unwavering integrity.

Born in Singapore, Jimmy demonstrated remarkable determination early in life when he ventured alone to England at age 18 to pursue his university education. It was there he met the love of his life, Ann, beginning a beautiful partnership grounded in devotion and family values. Together they built a life filled with love, raising their children Justin and Rachel in a home warmed by laughter, music, and Jimmy's infamous goofy sense of humor.

Throughout his distinguished career, Jimmy evolved from accountant to financial controller, ultimately finding his true calling as an insurance agent and trainer with Prudential. He was more than a professional to his clients and trainees – he was a trusted advisor and mentor who helped countless individuals secure their futures. His commitment to integrity, honesty, and genuine care for others earned him deep respect in his field.

Jimmy's love for life expressed itself in many ways. He was an avid tennis player and fan, a passionate gardener, and an enthusiastic singer who particularly loved performing Elvis songs. He delighted in traveling, savored good food, and found joy in simple pleasures like watching football matches and documentaries. His weekends were often spent creating precious memories with his children, taking them on adventures and sharing his zest for life.

A man of deep faith, Jimmy served his Catholic community as a devoted lector, bringing the same dedication to his spiritual life as he did to every aspect of his life. His tremendous heart extended not only to people but to animals, whom he loved dearly.

Jimmy is survived by his loving wife Ann; son Justin and daughter-in-law Lisa; daughter Rachel and son-in-law Shashi, his beloved grandchildren Adam, Danial, and Yasmin and his extended family. He leaves behind a legacy of integrity, kindness, loyalty, and selfless love that will continue to inspire all who knew him.

Jimmy will be deeply missed but his spirit lives on in the countless lives he touched and the values he instilled in those around him. His family finds peace knowing that his was a life well-lived, defined by service to others and unwavering devotion to those he loved.

We remember Jimmy from the time that we stayed in Singapore and shared many get-togethers since 1998. Especially New Years eve of 1999 when we passed the millennium on the Singapore Straits between the islands of Singapore on a boat trip. We passed the millennium between Pulau Semakau and Pulau Bukom with the sights on the skyscrapers of Singapore downtown. Jimmy and family had organized this wonderful boat trip with a group of close friends and we were delighted to be invited on this special and once in a lifetime never to forget occasion. Of course, plenty of laughter, food and music on board and fireworks from the ships surrounding us. The second boat trip we did with Jimmy and family was on a Sunday to one of the smaller islands Pulau Hantu Besar for a barbeque. The weather was great and the water was clear. This allowed us to enjoy nature and see so many fish along the way. Of course, again, plenty of laughter, food and music on the beach surrounded by blue skies, clear water and palm trees. Also, this afternoon was a great experience and we will never forget Jimmy. Our warmest condolences to Ann and family. Peter and Marie-José Oortwijn.

I shall treasure my very fond memories of working with Jim at the Forest Row Repair Cafe. He was incredibly kind and thoughtful -you never needed to ask for a cuppa because he'd already organised it, always taking care to memorise everyone's preferences. Jim was instrumental in oiling the cogs and maintaining a happy team, never with any fuss or expectation. He was humble, generous, hardworking, stoical and always, always with a ready smile. He will be incredibly missed at the Cafe - he was an essential member of the team. With love to Ann and family. Fleur

We first met Jim at Hastings College in late 60's, Malaysians, Singaporeans, Thais, Japanese, Ugandans, Hong Kongers and a large contingent of wealthy middle eastern students together we all blended in with the local students.
Jim was sharing with Joseph and Mick Chong at 72 Warrior Square St Leonard's on sea. Lee Hoong Kwong and the late Paul Choong was sharing at the basement flat of the same house.
72a Warrior Square was the base for us to gather thanks to the generosity of Paul and Hoong, it became the unofficial base for us, mainly Malaysians and Singaporeans where we would recreate the food from the east.
Looking back it was the least stressful time of our lives, we had huge amounts of fun and memories, a lot of them by certain individuals, unfortunately not appropriate to share.

Remembering you Jim.

I have only had the pleasure of knowing Jim over the last few years, when him and Ann came to support us at the Forest Row Repair Cafe. That wonderful smile and warm welcome made all of us feel special in his company. He looked out for us all each month with cups of tea, and just making sure we were all OK. We will all miss Jim desperately, but I am so grateful I got to spend some time getting to know this warm and caring man. Thank you Jim, for everything.
Much love to Ann and your family.

Jimmy always knew how to make us laugh. He always had a story to share and wisdom to pass on, whether that be teaching us how to play mahjong or teaching Sani how to tie a tie. We thank him for his contribution to our lives and will miss dinners and games of Scrabble with him greatly. Rest in peace Jimmy 🕊️

Jimmy, was a truly valued volunteer at the Crowborough Repair Cafe along with his lovely wife Ann. It's not the same without his cheeky smile and warm personality. As we shared the news at our last Cafe it was met with such shock and sadness. Our love and thoughts are with Ann and Jimmy's friends and family. Jimmy left footprints - that's for sure. With love Susanna, on behalf of the whole Repair Cafe team.

We have many happy memories of our times together with Ann and Jimmy since we first met almost 30 years ago. Most of that time we have lived in different countries so couldn't meet up very often but had great times together when we did meet, including your visit to us in Dubai. We will always remember Jimmy's cheerful nature and great sense of humour. Sorry we can't be with you on 21st but our thoughts will be with you. Rest in peace, Jimmy.

“Jimmy, I know you are now in the best place. No more pain or suffering but living a life with Jesus” 😄❤️

Jimmy is a mentor, a coach, a teacher, a comedian, an actor and best, like a father to me who often nag at me like a child but I knew it meant good to me. I knew him in 2004 when I was very lost in my career direction. He had journey with me together with few of our colleagues and taught me a lot of life lessons for more than a decade. He was always so kind and helpful and never say NO to people who need help. His charitable heart showed so much of who he is.

He has contributed a big part of my growth journey and many others too.

Thank you and good bye Jimmy. Your legacy remained in my heart. We will see each other in due time.

We have some remarkable people within the Repair Café movement, and Jimmy was one of them. I knew him through my work as a volunteer at Forest Row Repair café where, together with Ann., he looked after us all.

I'm sorry that I can't be with you on the 21st January, but my thoughts will be with you together with memories of a kind, funny warm and diligent man who I only knew for a short time but whose company I always enjoyed.

Jimmy - we will miss you......

Although we have only known Jim for the past 8 years we have grown extremely fond of him. He was always a very cheerful man with great conversation, kindness and a wicked sense of humour with that little twinkle in his eyes.
We loved Jim and will miss him very much.
We hope he is up there singing with Elvis who I’m certain will be very impressed with his singing ability.
Sleep well Jim, until we meet again for that big party in the sky.
We are truly honoured to have known you.

Remembering Jimmy, the fortuitous meeting we had in a kopi tiam in Havelock Road 3 decades ago, and how our lives intersected during the subsequent years. Jimmy had a humble, generous, and jovial spirit. I enjoyed talking to him, and he took care of my insurance needs when he transitioned from his role from finance to insurance. As the years passed, our interactions became infrequent. One of our last meetings took place many years ago when I joined him for a karaoke outing. During that outing, I discovered Jimmy's fondness for Elvis. He even sang like Elvis. I am filled with sadness on the passing of my friend Jimmy, but consoled by the knowledge that we will meet again in the age to come.

May the deeds he did for many others in his profession of many years remain as his legacy. Will always remember his great sense of humour and selfless sharing during his many training sessions. Not forgetting too, the birthdays wishes he sent to me though the many years.
