Obituary

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Jeremy Lee Spears, a beloved son, cherished friend, and respected creative who left us too soon. Jeremy passed away on February 25 at the age of 50.

Jeremy was born and raised in Dickson, Tennessee, where he graduated from Dickson County High School alongside singer-songwriter John Rich and actor Anson Mount. From an early age, Jeremy exhibited a strong artistic gift that would shape the rest of his life. He went on to earn a degree from the Atlanta College of Art before moving to New York City.

In New York, Jeremy’s creative talents and love for fashion, art, and culture were quickly recognized. His career blossomed as he became a key figure in the fashion industry, first working as Assistant Fashion & Market Editor at Jane magazine and later as Bookings Editor at Marie Claire, where he was featured on the 2009 reality television show Running in Heels. In New York, Jeremy was known not only for his creative brilliance but also his magnetic personality, sly humor, and infectious charm, which drew people to him wherever he went. His artistic talent also led him to work alongside renowned artist, actor, and musician John Lurie, and these experiences shaped his unique perspective and cemented his place in the creative world. His career was marked by a relentless pursuit of beauty in everything he did.

Jeremy formed deep and lasting connections, both personally and professionally, with individuals who shared his creative passions. He loved collaborating with others to bring creative projects to life, always striving to inspire and make a lasting impact. In the final years of his life, Jeremy moved back to Dickson to be closer to his family. A gifted artist who loved to paint, draw, and make films, Jeremy channeled his talent into various art projects—including a collaborative short film that, in 2024, was selected from a pool of hundreds to be screened at film festivals and art museums across the globe.

Jeremy will be remembered not only for his creativity, but also for his warm heart and deep compassion. Jeremy’s legacy is one of beauty—beauty in the art he created, in the way he lived his life, in his approach to friendship, and in the countless lives he touched. He loved his many, many friends and family deeply, and made each of them feel valued and cherished. Though his passing is tragic, we know that Jeremy would not want anyone to dwell in sorrow. Instead, he would want us to remember him with love, embracing the creative spirit that defined his life.

Along with countless devoted friends and his beloved cat Maddy, Jeremy is survived by his mother, whom he loved beyond words, Teresa Rochelle Spears Davis; his grandmother, Mary Virginia Spears; his stepfather, Joel B. Davis; and a stepbrother, Bruce Davis; several aunts, uncles and cousins. He is preceded by his father, David Elmer Spears.

Thank you so much for putting this beautiful gallery together. I've been working on an art piece to honor Jeremy. I just shared it and included a link to this page so other's might become aware of it as well.

An electric presence that’s impossible to put words to, Jeremy was a constant inspiration throughout my life and the lives of so many in our shared queer community. I’m so heartbroken that we will never finish the ideas we dreamed about collaborating on together. At least I’ll have the hours of obscure music we reveled in and exchanged over the years and the memories of your chaotic beauty. Truly a singular being who was so relentlessly himself.

Jeremy, thank you for your friendship over these years since my beloved sister, Katie tragically left us. You helped me to connect to her in ways only the cosmos can understand. You and her had a beautiful and pure love. 💞 I know you’re dancing together somewhere in a creative arts and karaoke realm. I’m relieved for you that you’re finally at peace. “Good friends screamin’ let me out”…🎶🎼🎸you’re free to fly now Jeremy, may your friends and family find solace & not grieve too much—the world offers us so much beauty in each passing moment. The memories of you are part of this awareness for me now 🙏🏼💫

Beloved nephew that I miss beyond words. It was always going to be us 3, me, your mom and you. Why did you go first? You had so much life still to live. I miss and love you so much!! We’re taking care of your home and your beloved cat. I talk and sometimes fuss at you nightly for not being here. This wasn’t time for your story to end! Love and miss you babe!
