“Dear Lord, we entrust Jackie into Your loving arms. May Christ Jesus welcome her into the promise of heaven, where there is no more pain of loss, only the love of God. Grant her eternal rest, O God, and let Your perpetual light shine upon her. Amen”
Obituary
Jacqueline Beverly Richards, a devoted aunt, sister and colleague, cherished family member, and dedicated public servant, passed away on March 27, 2025, in New York City at the age of 72.
Born on September 27, 1952, in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, to Edward and Leanora Richards (née Nimblett), Jacqueline was the youngest of three siblings. She graduated from Mount Saint Joseph Academy in 1970 and later earned her bachelor’s degree in Communications, Speech Therapy and Audiology from the University at Buffalo in 1975.
Jacqueline devoted over 35 years of service to the New York City Department of Finance as a City Assessor, where she was a proud and active member of District Council 37, the Public Employees Union of New York City. Throughout her distinguished career, Jacqueline assessed a staggering number of buildings across New York City. As a dedicated appraiser, her work touched nearly every corner of the city she loved. At the time, the total value of all buildings in New York City was estimated at approximately $1.4 trillion, and she played a vital role in evaluating that immense landscape. Jacqueline served in one of the most significant cities in the world, a responsibility she carried with precision, pride, and unwavering dedication.
Known affectionately as Auntie Jackie, she made it her mission to celebrate milestones of her nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews. Whether it was a birth, graduation, or special event. Auntie Jackie never missed an opportunity to show her love and support. She was known for her warm heart, sharp wit, and unwavering loyalty to her family and friends. Jackie was also fondly known as the “little sister” to her much older brothers, Henry and Ashton, a role she embraced and cherished throughout her life. Jackie was a devoted daughter who cared for her mother during her illness until her passing.
She is preceded in death by her brothers, Ashton and Henry, and her sister-in-law, Carol. She is survived by sister-in-law Kathleen and her ten nieces and nephews, along with their children.
A private cremation took place on April 17, 2025. Jacqueline will be laid to rest beside her mother, Leanora Richards, at Cypress Hills Cemetery, Section 15 – Great Valley, Grave #4263, located at 833 Jamaica Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11208.
Auntie Jackie’s love and presence will forever be missed, but her legacy of kindness, devotion, and friendship will live on in all who knew her.
